Amused

Chapter 8: The Man My Father Trusted Most

The name on the file stared back at me.

Daniel Hayes.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the buzzing lights above us.

Not the rain hitting the windows somewhere far above.

Not even the sound of my own breathing.

Just his name.

The man who had stood beside my father.

The man who had protected me.

The man who had spent the entire day telling me to search for the truth.

His name was now sitting beside the most terrifying question of my life.

Was he part of it?

Daniel didn’t move.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t immediately say it was impossible.

He just stared at the file.

Like he had been waiting twenty years for this moment.

“Say something,” I whispered.

His eyes slowly lifted.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Not my name.””

I pointed at the file.

“Explain that.””

Adrian stood silently behind me.

For once, he wasn’t enjoying seeing someone else under suspicion.

He looked just as shocked.

Daniel walked toward the shelf.

“Your father labeled this file.””

“Yes.””

“But that doesn’t mean what you think.””

I laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that.””

I picked up the file.

“Adrian said the same thing when he was trying to explain why he manipulated me.””

Daniel flinched.

I saw it.

And it hurt.

Because I wanted him to be innocent.

I wanted at least one person from my father’s world to be exactly who I thought they were.

But I had learned something today.

The people closest to you were the ones who knew exactly where to hurt you.

“Open it,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire.””

“Open it.””

The command echoed through the vault.

He hesitated.

Then reached for the folder.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Financial records.

Photographs.

A timeline.

I grabbed the first page.

My eyes scanned the words.

And slowly, confusion replaced anger.

Because it wasn’t an accusation.

It was an investigation.

My father had been investigating Daniel.

But why?

I looked at the dates.

The files started twenty-one years ago.

Before my mother died.

Before Bennett Medical became a corporation.

Before Adrian entered my life.

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note from my father.

Daniel is the only person I trust to uncover the truth.

My hand froze.

I looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His face changed.

A mixture of sadness and exhaustion.

“Your father knew someone inside the company was leaking information.””

I stared.

“Someone inside?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked at the papers.

“That’s what we never proved.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Then why was your name on the file?””

“Because your father needed a way to hide the investigation.””

I didn’t understand.

“He put your name on it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because if someone found a file labeled ‘investigation into company betrayal,’ they would know they were being watched.””

I looked back at the documents.

“So he disguised it?””

Daniel nodded.

“He made it look like I was the person under suspicion.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Convenient explanation.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You have every reason not to trust me.””

“Yes,” Adrian replied.

The tension between them filled the room.

“But that doesn’t mean you’re innocent.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

Instead, he turned to me.

“Claire, your father knew there was a traitor.””

“Who?””

“We never found out.””

The answer frustrated me.

“Twenty years and you never found out?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know it wasn’t you?””

Daniel went completely still.

The question hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed to ask.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked down.

“I don’t know how you can be certain of anyone after today.””

The room went quiet.

Because he was right.

My entire life had become a collection of unanswered questions.

I looked at the evidence again.

There were financial transfers.

Company documents.

Private meeting notes.

Then I saw something.

A signature.

My father’s.

And beneath it, another signature.

Daniel’s.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at the page.

His expression changed.

“That shouldn’t be here.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He took the paper carefully.

“This agreement was never finalized.””

Adrian moved closer.

“What agreement?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

I looked at the top.

The words were clear.

*Emergency Transfer of Bennett Medical Control.*

My heart raced.

“Emergency transfer?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“This was a contingency plan.””

“For what?””

He looked at me.

“In case something happened to your father.””

I stared.

“Something like his death?””

Daniel’s silence was enough.

Adrian picked up another page.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He was staring at a date.

“What is it?””

He handed me the document.

The date was three days before my mother’s accident.

Three days.

My hands went cold.

“My father knew something was going to happen.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because you were twelve.””

I looked away.

The answer was logical.

But logic didn’t make it hurt less.

I was tired of people deciding what I could handle.

“What happened after my mother died?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Your father changed.””

“How?””

“He stopped trusting everyone.””

“Everyone except you?””

Daniel didn’t respond.

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

His eyes lifted.

“Because your father believed I was the only person who could protect you.””

The words should have comforted me.

Instead, they made me angry.

“Protect me from what?””

Daniel looked toward the files.

“From the person who caused your mother’s death.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

A second later, the vault door made a clicking sound.

It locked.

My heart jumped.

“What was that?””

Daniel immediately moved toward the door.

“It shouldn’t lock automatically.””

He tried the handle.

Nothing.

Adrian looked around.

“Are we trapped?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was worse.

He checked the security panel.

The screen was black.

Then a message appeared.

A single sentence.

*ACCESS REVOKED.*

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

He was staring at the screen.

“This system can only be controlled from inside Bennett Medical’s executive network.””

Adrian understood first.

“Someone knows we’re here.””

The vault suddenly felt smaller.

The air heavier.

Someone had found us.

Someone who knew exactly what we were searching for.

Then a speaker above us crackled.

A voice filled the room.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Claire.””

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone knew that voice.

It was the voice of someone who had stood beside my father for decades.

Someone who attended every company celebration.

Someone who gave speeches after my father died.

Someone who comforted me when I lost my family.

The voice continued.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“But you were never supposed to open that vault.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone completely white.

“Who is it?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because the voice said the name himself.

“Claire, your father lied to you about many things.””

A pause.

“But he was right about one.””

The speaker crackled.

“I was the only person he should never have trusted.””

My heart stopped.

The man spoke again.

“Daniel Hayes is not the traitor.””

Silence.

Then the final words.

“I am.””

The vault lights went out.

And in the darkness, I heard Adrian whisper the name of the man who had just confessed.

“Victor Bennett.””

My father’s closest friend.

The man who had been running Bennett Medical beside him for twenty years.

May you like

The man I called Uncle Victor my entire life.

The man who had just admitted he destroyed my family.
