Chapter 7: What Happened After Midnight
Richard's face had changed.
The smooth confidence was gone.
For the first time since I had known him, my uncle looked like a man who had been cornered.
Michael stood across from him, breathing hard.
“You said he was trying to escape,” Richard said.
Michael didn't blink.
“That was the story you gave everyone.””
Richard shook his head.
“You're lying.””
“No.””
“You were seventeen.””
“I was twenty-three.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
Michael took one step forward.
“You remember the night perfectly.””
I looked between them.
“You both know what happened.””
Michael turned to me.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
He swallowed.
“The fire started at 11:47 p.m.””
Thomas checked his watch as if the exact time mattered.
“It was 11:43,” he said.
Michael looked at him.
“No. The second alarm was logged at 11:47.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“You're right.””
Richard snapped, “None of that proves anything.””
I stared at him.
“You're afraid.””
His expression hardened.
“I am concerned.””
“You've never been concerned about anything.””
“That is enough.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You don't get to tell me when it's enough.””
I stepped toward him.
“You were my uncle. You were family. You stood beside me when my mother died. You told me my father was a coward who abandoned us.””
Richard's face tightened.
“You don't know what your father did.””
“Then tell me.””
“He lied to everyone.””
“So did you.””
Richard looked at Michael.
“And so did your husband.””
Michael didn't defend himself.
That made me angrier.
“Stop doing that.””
Michael looked at me.
“Doing what?””
“Standing there like I have to figure out which liar is less dishonest.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
I turned back to Richard.
“What happened after midnight?””
His face went still.
There it was.
The question from my father's letter.
The one Michael had refused to answer.
The one that had followed me from the restaurant into the vault.
I stepped closer.
“What happened after midnight?””
Richard said nothing.
Thomas moved toward the vault table and picked up the cassette recorder.
“Your father made a recording.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Destroy that.””
Thomas smiled faintly.
“Too late.””
He pressed play.
My father's voice filled the basement.
“Emily, if you're hearing this, then Richard has finally realized the account survived.””
Richard moved toward him.
Michael blocked his path.
“Don't.””
Richard laughed.
“You think this changes anything?””
The recorder continued.
“At midnight, Michael came to the factory.””
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
My father's voice became quieter.
“He came because I asked him to.””
Richard's breathing changed.
“Your father knew I was going to burn the records.””
Richard muttered, “Lies.””
Michael said, “Keep listening.””
The recording continued.
“Michael did not come to kill me.””
I looked at him.
My heart pounded.
“He came to stop me.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
My father's voice continued.
“I knew the money trail would lead to Richard.””
Richard backed away.
“But I also knew Richard had someone inside my company.””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked down.
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
The recording answered.
“My son.””
I froze.
Michael closed his eyes.
Richard stared at him.
The room went silent.
My father's voice continued.
“Richard's son has been helping him move the money.””
I looked at Michael.
“You.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Your father called you his son.””
“I know.””
“But you were working for him?””
“No.””
The recording crackled.
“My son is not Michael.””
I stopped breathing.
Richard's face went white.
Daniel whispered, “No…”
I looked at him.
“My father's son?””
Daniel stared at Richard.
Richard whispered, “Edward…”
The recording continued.
“My son is the person I trusted most.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
My father had a son.
A son I had never known about.
A son Richard had apparently used.
And the answer was somehow sitting in the room with us.
“Who?”” I asked.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Richard.
Then Thomas.
Then Daniel.
Daniel's face had gone completely white.
I stared at him.
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Emily…”
“You know.””
“I—”
“You know who he is.””
Daniel swallowed.
Michael looked at him.
“Tell her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I can't.””
“Tell me.””
“I can't.””
“Daniel.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Your father had a son.””
“Yes.””
“He was born before you.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward Richard.
Richard was staring at him.
And suddenly I understood.
“It's you.””
Daniel shook his head violently.
“No.””
“You're my father's son.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Daniel's lips trembled.
“Because your father isn't the only man who has been lying to you.””
Michael stepped between us.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I pushed his arm away.
“Don't protect him.””
“I am not.””
“Then explain.””
Michael looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“My mother worked for Edward.””
“So?””
“She had an affair with him.””
My throat tightened.
“When?””
“Before you were born.””
Richard whispered, “That's impossible.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew.””
Richard's face went blank.
I stared.
“You knew?””
Richard didn't answer.
Daniel continued.
“Your father gave me his mother's last name because he didn't want Richard to know I was his.””
I shook my head.
“You're saying Daniel is my half-brother?””
“Yes.””
The word came from Michael.
Everything inside me went still.
Daniel looked at me.
“I didn't know until years later.””
“When did you find out?””
“The week of the fire.””
I looked at the recorder.
My father's voice had gone quiet.
“One of the hardest things I ever did was hide my son from my daughter.””
My knees nearly gave out.
Michael caught me.
I pulled away.
My father had another child.
A brother.
Someone who had been part of this nightmare before I even knew he existed.
Then my father's voice said the words that made me look at Michael again.
“Michael knows the truth.””
Michael stared at the floor.
“And he knows what happened after midnight.””
I whispered, “Tell me.””
He didn't answer.
“Michael.””
He finally looked at me.
“After midnight, your father told me to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard had arrived.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You told him?””
Michael nodded.
“I told him everything.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You had no right.””
“You were planning to kill him.””
“No.””
“You brought the fuel.””
Richard went silent.
I looked at him.
“You brought the fuel?””
He said nothing.
Thomas answered.
“We found the purchase records.””
Richard's expression became bitter.
“I wanted him frightened.””
Michael laughed once.
“You wanted him dead.””
“I wanted the company.””
There it was.
The truth.
Simple.
Ugly.
Human.
Richard looked at me.
“Your father was going to destroy everything I'd built.””
“You built it with stolen money.””
“I built it with sacrifice.””
“You killed my mother.””
“She chose to betray me.””
“You killed her.””
Richard looked away.
Michael stepped closer.
“You poisoned her.””
Richard's jaw clenched.
“Enough.””
“Why?””
Michael's voice rose.
“Because she knew.””
Richard suddenly pulled a gun.
Thomas shouted.
“Down!””
The basement erupted.
I dropped behind the table.
A gunshot cracked through the room.
Michael lunged.
Richard fired again.
The bullet struck the vault door.
Thomas tackled Richard.
They crashed against the wall.
Daniel pulled me toward the stairwell.
“Move!””
I stumbled after him.
Michael grabbed Richard's wrist.
The gun fell.
Richard kicked it away.
Thomas pinned him.
“Don't move!””
Richard laughed.
“You think you've won?””
Michael bent over him.
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“You've only opened the first door.””
He smiled.
“The second account belongs to someone you trust.””
Michael's face changed.
“What?””
Richard looked straight at me.
“Ask your husband what happened at 12:13.””
My blood went cold.
Michael didn't speak.
I looked at him.
“What happened at 12:13?””
He stared at me.
“Emily…”
“Answer me.””
“I can't.””
Richard laughed.
“Of course you can't.””
I stepped toward Michael.
“Why?””
He looked broken now.
“Because at 12:13…”
He stopped.
His eyes filled with tears.
“At 12:13, I watched your father walk back into the burning factory.””
I couldn't breathe.
“And you let him?””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
He looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“I followed him.””
A beat of silence.
“And I found your father beside a body.””
My stomach dropped.
“Whose body?””
Michael's answer came quietly.
“Your mother's.””
Richard stopped smiling.
Because for the first time, I knew Michael wasn't protecting my uncle.
May you like
He was protecting the truth about my mother.
And whatever happened at 12:13 was the one thing he had been terrified to tell me.
