Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in Her Last Letter
The room felt like it had lost all the air inside it.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The words on the page sat between us like a confession.
*Richard will come for Wesley next.*
Wesley stared at the letter.
His fingers shook slightly.
Not because he was scared.
Because he was trying to understand how his entire life could have been built on things he never knew.
“Mom wrote this?””
His voice was barely audible.
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night before I left.””
Wesley looked up.
“The night before you abandoned us?””
The pain in Ethan’s face was immediate.
But he didn’t argue.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Even Wesley.
“You’re admitting it?””
Ethan looked at his son.
“I left.””
A long pause.
“But I never abandoned you.””
Wesley looked away.
“Those are the same thing to a sixteen-year-old kid.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I know.””
Richard suddenly laughed.
Quietly.
Almost sadly.
“You see?””
Everyone looked at him.
“This is what he does.””
Ethan turned.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“You spent years hiding behind guilt because guilt was easier than the truth.””
Wesley looked at Richard.
“What truth?””
Richard stared at him.
“The truth that your father failed your mother.””
The sentence hit hard.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
“Why?””
Richard’s voice sharpened.
“Because it’s true?””
Lily moved closer to Ethan.
“Stop lying.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still believe him?””
“I believe what I saw.””
“And what did you see?””
Lily’s expression changed.
Pain crossed her face.
“I saw you follow me.””
The room froze.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Wesley looked at Lily.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I knew before I disappeared.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You should be careful with accusations.””
Lily laughed bitterly.
“Accusations?””
She pointed at him.
“You told me nobody would believe me.””
Nobody spoke.
“You told me Ethan would choose his reputation over the truth.””
Ethan looked shocked.
“I never knew you heard that.””
Lily looked at him.
“I was there.””
Her voice broke.
“The night you two argued.””
Ethan frowned.
“When?””
“The night I called you.””
A chill went through me.
Lily continued.
“You came to my apartment.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
“Richard was already there.””
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Wesley looked at Richard.
“You were there?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Wesley took a step back.
“All these years…”
His voice cracked.
“You let me hate my father.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“I never told you to hate him.””
“You didn’t have to.””
Wesley looked furious.
“You just let everyone believe he was the villain.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“That’s because he made himself look like one.””
Ethan looked exhausted.
“I made mistakes.””
“Yes.””
Richard nodded.
“You did.””
Then he looked at Wesley.
“And that’s why everyone believed me.””
The words were cruel because they contained a piece of truth.
Ethan had secrets.
Ethan had disappeared.
Ethan had left his family.
And Richard had used those facts like weapons.
Wesley looked at the letter again.
“What exactly did my mother discover?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan sat down.
“I think it’s time you know everything.””
Wesley stared at him.
“Finally.””
Ethan accepted the anger.
“Your mother discovered Richard had been moving money from the family business.””
Richard immediately reacted.
“That’s a lie.””
Ethan ignored him.
“She found documents.””
“What kind of documents?””
“Financial records.””
Wesley looked confused.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because your mother wasn’t just his friend.””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“She was his business partner.””
Richard’s face changed.
Wesley looked at him.
“My mother trusted you with her company?””
“Yes.””
“And you stole from her?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
Ethan continued.
“He wasn’t stealing.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He was preparing.””
A silence followed.
“For what?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“To take everything.””
Richard laughed.
“You have no proof.””
Ethan looked at the box.
“Yes.””
Richard stopped smiling.
Wesley noticed.
“You do.””
Ethan nodded.
“Your mother collected evidence.””
Wesley looked through the documents again.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she hid it here?””
“She knew Richard would look for it.””
Richard’s face became colder.
“And yet she trusted you to protect it.””
Ethan looked at him.
“She trusted me to protect Wesley.””
Richard’s expression shifted.
That was the first time his confidence disappeared.
Wesley saw it.
“You weren’t after the evidence.””
Everyone looked at him.
Richard said nothing.
“You were after me.””
Richard’s silence was louder than any answer.
Wesley stepped closer.
“Why?””
Richard looked at him.
And for one terrifying second, I thought he might finally admit everything.
Instead, he smiled.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“What?””
“You’re asking why I wanted you.””
He leaned closer.
“You should ask why your mother thought you were the key.””
Wesley froze.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at Ethan.
“You never told him.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“No.””
Wesley turned.
“Told me what?””
Ethan looked devastated.
“Wesley…”
“No.””
His voice was shaking now.
“Not again.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Your mother found out Richard wasn’t just taking money.””
“What else?””
“He was hiding something.””
“What?””
Ethan looked at Lily.
Then at Wesley.
“He had a connection to your past.””
Wesley frowned.
“My past?””
“Yes.””
“What connection?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily quietly said:
“He knew about me before I was born.””
The room went silent.
Wesley looked at her.
“What?””
Lily looked at Ethan.
“I think it’s time.””
Ethan looked terrified.
“Lily.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“We can’t keep protecting him from the truth.””
Wesley stared.
“Protecting who?””
Lily looked at him.
“You.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Wesley…”
Lily reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this for years.””
She placed it on the table.
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“From who?””
Lily looked at him.
“Your biological father.””
The room went completely still.
Nobody even breathed.
Wesley stared.
“What?””
Ethan stood up immediately.
“Lily, no.””
But she didn’t move.
“Wesley deserves to know.””
“Know what?””
His voice was barely there.
Lily looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“The man you called Dad your entire life…”
She looked at Ethan.
“Is the man who raised you.””
A pause.
“But he isn’t your biological father.””
Wesley stepped backward.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
“No.””
He looked at Ethan.
“Tell me she’s wrong.””
Ethan couldn’t.
That was the answer.
Wesley’s face broke.
“Dad?””
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m still your father.””
“But not my real father?””
The words destroyed him.
“I love you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Ethan looked away.
And in that moment, Wesley finally understood why everyone had been protecting him.
Not because he was weak.
Because the truth was unbearable.
Richard watched silently.
Almost satisfied.
Until Wesley picked up the envelope.
His hands shaking.
He opened it.
Read the first line.
Then his expression changed.
Because the letter wasn’t from a stranger.
It was from someone he had known his entire life.
Someone who had been standing beside him at every family gathering.
Someone who had smiled at him while hiding the truth.
Wesley looked up.
May you like
And whispered the name.
“Richard.””
