Amused

Chapter 7: The Hidden Account

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were moving closer.

Dad held the papers in his hands, but he wasn’t reading anymore.

He was staring at Jessica.

“What did you do?””

Jessica wiped her tears.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””

Dad’s voice became sharper.

“That’s not an answer.””

I looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Jessica sat down slowly.

“I opened an account.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What kind of account?””

She looked at me.

“A savings account.””

That sounded harmless.

Until Dad asked:

“For who?””

Jessica didn’t answer.

And that was the answer.

“Cameron?”” Dad asked.

She nodded.

My heart sank.

“You used my scholarship money to create savings for him?””

“No.””

She said it quickly.

Then she looked ashamed.

“Not exactly.””

Dad stared at her.

“Jessica.””

She took a deep breath.

“When I paid the team expenses, there was money left.””

I felt cold.

“Left?””

She nodded.

“I transferred part of it.””

“To where?””

She looked down.

“Cameron’s account.””

I couldn’t speak.

Dad looked like he was trying to control himself.

“How much?””

Jessica whispered the amount.

It wasn’t all the money.

But it was enough.

Enough to hurt.

Enough to prove she had made decisions with something that was never hers.

Dad closed his eyes.

“Why?””

Jessica looked broken.

“I thought I was protecting him.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You keep saying you were protecting him.””

My voice trembled.

“But you were hurting someone else.””

Jessica didn’t respond.

Because there was nothing she could say.

That night, Cameron came over.

Dad had asked him to come.

When he arrived, he immediately noticed the tension.

“What happened?””

Dad handed him the papers.

Cameron read them.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

Jessica looked at him.

“I was trying to help you.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

“I didn’t need this.””

Jessica started crying.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Mom.””

Cameron’s voice cracked.

“I do understand.””

He looked at me.

“You took from Jasmine.””

Jessica looked hurt.

“You’re choosing her?””

Cameron looked confused.

“This isn’t about choosing.””

Then he said something that I never expected.

“It’s about right and wrong.””

The room went silent.

Jessica looked at her son like she was seeing him for the first time.

The boy she had protected so aggressively was now the one holding her accountable.

A week later, Dad made a decision.

He didn’t report Jessica.

Not because he forgave her.

Because he wanted the situation handled differently.

“She needs to understand the damage,” he told me.

“How?””

“By fixing it.””

Jessica agreed to repay everything.

Not just because she had to.

Because she finally understood.

She got a second job.

She sold more personal belongings.

She stopped blaming everyone else.

But rebuilding trust was harder than paying money.

One afternoon, she called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“Jasmine.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I wanted to say something.””

I waited.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked out my dorm window.

“Sorry doesn’t fix everything.””

“I know.””

That surprised me.

She didn’t argue.

She didn’t defend herself.

“I know I hurt you.””

I stayed silent.

“I spent so much time trying to make Cameron’s life perfect that I destroyed someone else’s.””

Her voice shook.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because forgiveness isn’t something someone can demand.

It’s something they earn.

“I appreciate you saying that,” I replied.

She cried quietly.

“Thank you for listening.””

After we hung up, I sat there for a long time.

I didn’t forgive her completely.

Not yet.

But something had changed.

For the first time, Jessica wasn’t fighting against the truth.

She was facing it.

Then, two weeks later, Dad received a letter from the scholarship foundation.

May you like

A letter that nobody expected.

And inside was a decision that would affect my entire future.
