Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Before Us

Dad opened the letter late at night.

I was sitting on the couch studying when I noticed his expression.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Dad?””

He handed me the letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The message was short.

But the meaning was huge.

It was from Jessica’s former husband.

Cameron’s father.

The letter explained something I never knew.

Jessica had a history of taking money from people close to her.

Not always huge amounts.

Sometimes small things.

Sometimes “temporary loans.””

But according to him, she always had an excuse.

“She convinces people she is helping someone,” the letter said.

Then she never takes responsibility.

I looked at Dad.

“She’s done this before?””

He nodded.

“She didn’t change. She just found new people to trust her.””

The next day, Dad confronted Jessica.

She was packing her things.

She looked surprised to see him.

“What now?””

Dad held the letter.

“Did you think I wouldn’t find out?””

Her face changed.

“What is that?””

“You know exactly what it is.””

For once, Jessica had nothing to say.

Dad placed the letter down.

“I wanted to believe this was a mistake.””

She looked away.

“But it wasn’t.””

Silence.

Then Jessica whispered:

“I was trying to help.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was softer now.

“You were trying to control everything.””

She started crying.

But this time, I couldn’t tell if it was regret.

Or fear.

Dad looked at her.

“You didn’t just take Jasmine’s money.””

He paused.

“You took her trust.””

Jessica looked at me.

“Jasmine…”

I stepped back.

That one movement said everything.

Months later, I started college.

The scholarship money was restored.

My books were paid for.

My future was safe.

But the biggest lesson wasn’t about money.

It was about knowing who truly stands beside you.

On my first day of classes, Dad called me.

“You ready?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

He laughed.

“I knew you would be.””

I looked across campus.

Students walking.

Professors talking.

A new beginning.

A year earlier, I thought my dream had been destroyed.

But someone tried to take my future.

And instead, they revealed who would fight to protect it.

My father once told me something I never forgot.

“People show you who they are when they think they can get away with something.””

Jessica thought she could take from me.

She thought I was too young to fight back.

She thought my father would choose peace over justice.

She was wrong.

Because sometimes the person you underestimate becomes the person who changes everything.

And sometimes losing something valuable reveals something even more priceless.

The people who will never let you lose yourself.
