Amused

Chapter 6: Rebecca's Final Message

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't understand what Richard had said.

“My wife?””

Richard nodded reluctantly.

“Rebecca created a contingency plan after she discovered the altered trust documents. She believed someone in the family was trying to gain control of Ethan's inheritance.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Why would she create a plan involving my father's business and say nothing to me?””

“Because she didn't know whom she could trust.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You expect me to believe my wife suspected someone was trying to steal from our unborn child, and she never told me?””

“She tried to tell you.””

The words struck harder than Richard intended.

Daniel remembered the last weeks of Rebecca's pregnancy. She had seemed distracted during dinner, often stopping halfway through a sentence when he entered the room. Once, she had asked him whether he trusted his father enough to question him about money.

Daniel had laughed and kissed her forehead.

“Dad built everything we have,” he had told her.

“If something is wrong, he'll tell me.””

Rebecca had looked at him for a long time.

Then she had changed the subject.

Daniel's chest tightened.

“What was the contingency plan?””

Richard opened the folder and removed a small envelope.

“Rebecca gave me this the night before she went into labor. She told me to keep it sealed unless the trust was challenged or Ethan's safety was threatened.””

Daniel stared at the envelope.

His name was written across the front in Rebecca's unmistakable handwriting.

Beneath it were four words.

*For Daniel, when necessary.*

His hands began to shake.

“You've had this for years?””

“Since the night she died.””

“And you never gave it to me?””

“Your father instructed me to wait. He said the trust needed to be finalized first.””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“My father died eight months ago.””

“I know.””

“And you still didn't give it to me.””

Richard lowered his head.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That the contents would expose people who might retaliate against you or Ethan.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

“Open it.””

“It's addressed to you.””

“Then why are you still holding it?””

Richard passed it across the desk.

Daniel sat down slowly.

For a moment, he couldn't break the seal. His thumb rested against the edge of the paper, and he stared at Rebecca's handwriting as though it were a photograph of her face.

Maria sat quietly across from him.

She didn't interrupt.

She didn't tell him to be strong.

She simply waited.

Finally, Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small memory card sealed in a transparent sleeve.

He unfolded the letter.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, it means I was unable to explain everything to you myself. I hope that isn't the case. I hope I'm sitting beside you while you laugh at how seriously I took a problem that turned out to be nothing.

But if I'm not there, please listen carefully.

Someone has been altering the documents connected to your father's private trust. I've seen evidence that money was diverted from accounts intended to protect Ethan's future. Your father knows something is wrong, but I don't believe he understands how far it has gone.

I wanted to tell you everything. I tried. But I am afraid that if you confront the wrong person before we have proof, the evidence will disappear.

There is a recording on the memory card. I made it after a meeting I wasn't supposed to attend. It may explain why the trust was altered.

Do not give it to Richard until you've listened to it yourself.

And Daniel, if anything happens to me, please don't assume that everyone who says they love our family is protecting it.

Love always,

Rebecca.

Daniel stopped reading.

The room blurred.

He pressed the letter against his forehead, trying to control his breathing.

Rebecca had written this while carrying their child, knowing she might be walking into something dangerous. She had planned for a future in which she might not be there to protect Ethan.

And she had trusted Daniel enough to leave him a way to uncover the truth.

He lowered the letter.

“Where did she make the recording?””

Richard looked at the memory card.

“I don't know.””

Daniel turned toward Luis, who had remained near the door.

“Can we play this securely?””

Luis nodded.

“I'll use an isolated computer in the security office. Nothing will be connected to the network.””

“Do it.””

Within minutes, they were gathered in the security room. Luis inserted the memory card into a computer that was disconnected from the household network. A single audio file appeared on the screen.

The filename was simple.

*Meeting_04.*

Daniel pressed play.

At first, there was static.

Then Rebecca's voice filled the room.

“...I know the trust was changed. I have the original documents.””

A man's voice answered.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

His father.

“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””

“Then explain it to me.””

“Rebecca, this is a family matter.””

“It's about Ethan's future. That makes it my business.””

A chair scraped.

Daniel leaned closer to the speaker.

His father's voice lowered.

“You need to understand that some decisions were made to keep this family intact.””

“By stealing from a baby?””

“We're not stealing anything.””

“The money was transferred out of the protected accounts. The signatures on the amended trust are not yours.””

Silence.

Then his father spoke again.

“You've been looking at records you don't understand.””

“I understand enough to know someone has been taking money that doesn't belong to them.””

Daniel's fingers curled into fists.

On the recording, Rebecca continued.

“Who changed the documents?””

His father didn't answer.

“Was it Vanessa?””

A long silence followed.

Then a second voice entered the conversation.

A woman's voice.

“You should have stayed out of it, Rebecca.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

He knew that voice, too.

It belonged to Vanessa.

The recording continued.

Rebecca sounded startled.

“Vanessa? What are you doing here?””

“Trying to stop you from destroying everything.””

“I'm trying to protect Ethan.””

“Ethan doesn't need forty million dollars. He needs a family.””

“Then why are you trying to take his inheritance?””

Vanessa laughed.

“Because it was never supposed to be his.””

Daniel stared at the monitor.

His sister had known about the trust long before the afternoon at the pool.

She had been involved in the dispute over the money.

And she had been arguing with Rebecca about Ethan's inheritance before Rebecca died.

On the recording, Rebecca spoke again.

“Your father promised the money would be protected.””

“Grandfather changed his mind,” Vanessa replied.

“He didn't change anything. Someone forged his signature.””

“You can't prove that.””

“I can.””

A sudden crash echoed through the recording.

Rebecca gasped.

Then Daniel's father spoke sharply.

“Enough! Both of you!””

The audio crackled.

When the voices returned, they were quieter.

Vanessa said, “If Daniel finds out, he'll never forgive us.””

Rebecca answered, “Then maybe you should have thought about that before you tried to steal from his son.””

The recording ended abruptly.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the computer screen.

His father had known.

Vanessa had known.

And Rebecca had confronted them both.

He looked at Richard.

“Was my father involved in stealing the money?””

Richard's expression was pained.

“I don't know whether he personally authorized the transfers. But he knew there was a dispute over the trust.””

“And Vanessa?””

“The recording suggests she was involved.””

Daniel stood so suddenly his chair struck the wall.

“Then why did she try to kill Ethan now?””

Richard hesitated.

“Perhaps because the trust was about to become active.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father structured the trust so that certain assets would transfer automatically after his death, subject to a final audit. That audit was scheduled to be completed this week.””

Daniel felt the pieces shifting into place.

His father had died eight months earlier.

The final audit was approaching.

If Vanessa had diverted money from the trust, the audit might expose her.

And if Ethan died before the trust was finalized, the legal structure might change.

“Who would inherit the assets if Ethan died?”” Daniel asked.

Richard looked down at the documents.

“Depending on the circumstances and the final trust provisions, some of the assets could have reverted to the family estate.””

“Which Vanessa would benefit from?””

“Potentially, yes.””

Daniel turned away.

The room suddenly felt suffocating.

His sister hadn't simply been jealous.

She had financial motives.

She had known about the trust, altered the camera settings, pushed his son toward death, and tried to frame the woman who saved him.

And now Rebecca's recording suggested that the conspiracy had begun years earlier.

Daniel looked at Maria.

“Did you know Vanessa was involved in the trust?””

Maria shook her head.

“No, sir. I only knew Mrs. Rebecca was frightened.””

“Did she ever mention a recording?””

Maria hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“One time, she asked me whether I knew how to hide something where nobody would think to look.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“What did you tell her?””

“I asked what she wanted to hide. She said it was something important, but she didn't want anyone in the house finding it.””

“Did you help her?””

Maria looked uncomfortable.

“I helped her put a small box in the old nursery.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What box?””

“A wooden keepsake box. She said it contained things for Ethan.””

Daniel was already moving toward the door.

“Show me.””

They hurried upstairs.

The old nursery had been converted into a guest room after Rebecca's death, but Daniel had never allowed anyone to remove the furniture. The small rocking chair remained in the corner, and a painted wooden chest sat beneath the window.

Maria walked toward the chest.

“No,” she murmured.

“She said the old nursery. Not this room.””

She looked around, then crouched beside a built-in cabinet that had been installed before Ethan was born.

“Here.””

Behind a stack of folded blankets, she found a narrow wooden box.

Daniel knelt beside her.

The lid was secured with a small brass latch.

Inside were several photographs, a hospital bracelet, and a sealed envelope bearing Rebecca's handwriting.

But there was something else.

A small flash drive.

Daniel picked it up.

“Another recording?””

“Perhaps,” Richard said from the doorway.

Daniel turned.

“Perhaps?””

Richard raised both hands.

“I'm only suggesting we examine it carefully.””

Daniel slipped the drive into his pocket.

“No. We already know what happens when you handle the evidence.””

Richard's face tightened, but he said nothing.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph of Rebecca standing outside the Whitmore mansion with Vanessa. The picture had been taken at night, and both women appeared to be arguing.

On the back, Rebecca had written a date.

The date was the night before she died.

Beneath it were six words.

*If I am gone, question the doctor.*

Daniel read the sentence twice.

His blood ran cold.

“What doctor?”” he whispered.

Maria covered her mouth.

Richard looked as though he might collapse.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

The detective was calling again.

“Mr. Whitmore, we need you to come to the station as soon as possible.””

“Why?””

“We've identified the person who sent the messages to Vanessa.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Who is it?””

The detective paused.

“Dr. Samuel Hayes. He was the physician who treated your wife during the final hours before her death.””

Daniel couldn't speak.

The doctor who had told him Rebecca's death was unavoidable.

The doctor who had explained every test result, every complication, every desperate attempt to save her.

The man whose words Daniel had trusted when his world fell apart.

“There's more,” the detective continued.

“We found a message from Vanessa asking him whether the original medical records still existed.””

Daniel stared at Rebecca's handwriting.

If I am gone, question the doctor.

The detective lowered his voice.

“Mr. Whitmore, Dr. Hayes has just left his office. His staff says he was carrying a suitcase, and nobody knows where he's going.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

A black sedan was pulling away from the mansion's front gate.

For one fleeting moment, he saw the driver's face through the glass.

It was Richard.

And in the passenger seat sat a man Daniel recognized from the hospital photographs.

May you like

Dr. Samuel Hayes.

*The two men had been in the house the entire time.*
