Amused

Chapter 9: The Price of a Father's Love

Marcus drove toward the old house with Detective Hayes's voice still echoing through the car's hands-free system.

“Mr. Reed, you must not enter that property alone. We're coordinating units now.””

“I understand.””

“Then stay where you are.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“My daughter is missing.””

“And we're treating this as an emergency. But if the person responsible is monitoring you, rushing in could put Maya in greater danger.””

He knew Hayes was right.

He also knew what it felt like to sit helplessly in a hospital corridor while the person he loved most slipped away.

He could not endure another moment of not knowing whether his child was safe.

“I'm not going to confront anyone without your team,” he said.

“But I need to get close enough to see whether she's there.””

“Do not approach the house until officers arrive.””

Marcus pulled into a gas station parking lot and stopped the car.

His phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Maya was sitting on a sofa in a dimly lit room, wearing the yellow cardigan Olivia had helped her choose the previous week.

Her eyes were red, but she appeared unharmed.

Beneath the image was a message.

*She wants her daddy. Come alone.*

Marcus's hands began to shake.

He forwarded the photograph to Detective Hayes.

Then he enlarged it, studying every detail.

The wallpaper was dark green. A brass lamp stood beside the sofa. Behind Maya, he could see a wooden cabinet with a chipped corner.

He recognized the room.

It was the sitting room at his old house.

He called Hayes.

“I know where she is. She's inside my house.””

“Officers are approaching the property now. Stay where you are.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Please find her.””

“We will.””

He waited for what felt like an eternity.

Then his phone rang again.

Vanessa.

He answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

“She's safe.””

“Put her on the phone.””

“Not yet.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“Vanessa, if you've frightened her—”

“Don't threaten me, Marcus. I'm the only reason she's still with you.””

He stared through the windshield.

“What does that mean?””

“You think you can destroy my life, take my son, and leave me with nothing? You think you can hand over every document you find and walk away like some innocent man?””

“I didn't steal anything from Maya.””

“You signed the documents.””

“I didn't authorize the transfers.””

“You signed blank forms. You trusted me. Don't pretend you weren't part of this.””

Marcus felt a cold knot form in his stomach.

He remembered the documents he had signed shortly after their wedding. Vanessa had brought them to his office in a neat folder, explaining that they were routine updates to his estate planning arrangements.

He had signed them between meetings.

He had not read every page.

But he had never knowingly authorized anyone to take money from his daughter.

“Whatever I signed, it doesn't give you the right to threaten Maya.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You're suddenly very concerned about being a father.””

The words struck him harder than he expected.

He thought of Maya sitting alone at breakfast, asking whether she was still his little girl.

He thought of the laundry room.

The threats.

The years he had mistaken silence for happiness.

“You're right about one thing,” he said quietly.

“I should have paid more attention.””

Vanessa fell silent.

Marcus continued.

“But I am paying attention now. And I'm not going to let you hurt her again.””

For a moment, he heard only breathing.

Then Vanessa said, “Bring the birth certificate.””

“The police have the documents.””

“Then bring another copy.””

“Why?””

“Because there is something you need to understand about Maya.””

He stared at the photograph on his phone.

“What?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Claire was going to tell you that Maya wasn't the child you thought she was.””

Marcus's chest tightened.

“That's a lie.””

“Is it? Why do you think Claire hid those records? Why do you think Eleanor was at the hospital? Why do you think Daniel kept visiting?””

“Because someone was manipulating the records.””

“Or because they were hiding something.””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“Put Maya on the phone.””

“No.””

“Then I'm not doing anything you ask.””

Vanessa's voice suddenly sharpened.

“Do you want to know why Claire died?””

The question stopped him cold.

“Yes.””

“Then listen carefully. Daniel was supposed to retrieve a document from the nursery. Claire caught him.

She threatened to expose us. She was already sick when I arrived, and I told Daniel to leave.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

“What did you give her?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why was medication administered before she deteriorated?””

Vanessa was silent.

Marcus leaned toward the phone.

“Why was Dr. Adrian Mercer involved?””

He heard a sharp intake of breath.

That was the first time Vanessa had sounded genuinely afraid.

“Where did you get that name?””

“From Claire's records.””

“You shouldn't have those.””

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand what they mean.””

“Then explain them.””

Vanessa began speaking rapidly.

“Daniel's father was treating Claire for a condition she didn't want anyone to know about. The medication was prescribed. There was nothing criminal about it.””

“Then why was the record altered?””

“I don't know.””

“Why did you tell Daniel to stop Claire from contacting the bank?””

She said nothing.

Marcus's voice trembled.

“Why did you make my daughter afraid of you?””

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

“Because Claire had left Maya a fortune, and I knew you would give it all away if she asked.””

“You stole from a child.””

“I was protecting my family!””

“You were protecting yourself.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“You have no idea what I gave up for you. I was the one who helped you rebuild your life after Claire died. I was the one who held you while you cried. I raised Maya when you were too broken to get out of bed.””

Marcus shut his eyes.

Some of it was true.

Vanessa had been there during the worst months of his grief. She had cooked, cleaned, and sat beside him when the house felt unbearably empty.

But kindness did not erase cruelty.

And whatever she had once done for him did not give her ownership of his daughter.

“You helped me when I was grieving,” he said.

“I'm grateful for that. But you used my grief to gain my trust, and then you used that trust against Maya.””

Vanessa's breathing became ragged.

“Bring the birth certificate.””

“Let me speak to my daughter first.””

After several seconds, he heard a small, trembling voice.

“Daddy?””

Marcus nearly broke.

“Maya, sweetheart, are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Are you frightened?””

She hesitated.

“A little.””

He swallowed hard.

“I'm coming to get you.””

“Daddy, please don't be angry with Vanessa because of me.””

The words nearly destroyed him.

Even now, after everything she had endured, Maya was still trying to protect the woman who had frightened her.

“Listen to me, sweetheart. None of this is your fault. You don't have to protect anyone from the truth.””

Maya began to cry.

“I want to come home.””

“You will.””

Vanessa snatched the phone away.

“That's enough.””

The line went dead.

Marcus sat frozen for one terrible second.

Then Detective Hayes called.

“Our units have reached the property. Stay where you are and keep your phone available.””

“Is Maya there?””

“We've seen movement inside, but we haven't established who is present. We're securing the area.””

Marcus stared at the house visible in the distance.

He could see the upstairs window of the nursery.

For years, it had been a room filled with toys and picture books.

Now it held the answer to questions that had haunted him since Claire died.

He wanted to run inside.

He wanted to drag every secret into the light.

Instead, he stayed where he was and followed the detective's instructions.

Twenty minutes later, Hayes called again.

“Mr. Reed, we have a problem. Vanessa isn't inside the house.””

Marcus's heart dropped.

“What?””

“We found evidence that someone entered the property earlier. Maya is not here.””

“Then where is she?””

“We're reviewing nearby cameras and following the information from the messages. We believe Vanessa may have left through the rear entrance before our officers arrived.””

Marcus pressed his forehead against the steering wheel.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Then another message arrived.

It contained a short video.

Maya sat on the same sofa, holding a stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa stood behind her.

“Tell your father what you told me,” Vanessa said.

Maya looked at the camera.

“Daddy, please bring the paper. Vanessa says she has something from Mommy.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“And Marcus, if you want to see your daughter again, you need to stop cooperating with the police.””

The video ended.

Marcus immediately sent it to Detective Hayes.

Then he called Helen.

“I need every document from Claire's files reviewed tonight. The birth certificate, the trust, the hospital records, everything.””

“Marcus, the police are handling the immediate search.””

“I know. But Vanessa says she has something from Claire. She wants the birth certificate, and she knows I found the medication records.””

Helen was quiet.

Then she said, “There's one more file from the flash drive we haven't reviewed. It was encrypted, and the forensic team has just managed to open it.””

Marcus's heart began pounding again.

“What is it?””

“A scanned letter from Claire to Eleanor. It discusses a private medical consultation and a decision Claire made concerning Maya.””

“Send it to me.””

Helen hesitated.

“Marcus, I need you to understand that this letter may contain sensitive information. It doesn't establish that Vanessa's claims are true.””

“Send it.””

A moment later, the file arrived.

Marcus opened it.

Eleanor,

I have decided not to pursue the additional testing. Marcus loves Maya as his daughter, and nothing could change the family we have built.

I know there may be questions about the circumstances surrounding her birth. I also know that asking those questions could create legal complications we do not need.

But I cannot allow someone to use uncertainty about her biological history to threaten her future.

If Vanessa ever discovers the consultation records, she may try to use them to gain control of Maya's trust. Please make sure the original documents remain protected.

Claire.

Marcus read the letter twice.

It did not say that Maya was not his biological daughter.

It said there had been questions about her biological history and that Claire had chosen not to pursue further testing.

He stared at the screen, his mind racing.

Had there been a mistake at the hospital?

Had Claire received information that made her uncertain?

Or had someone deliberately created confusion to manipulate their family?

He called Helen.

“What does this mean?””

“It means Claire considered further testing and chose not to proceed. We don't know why, and we mustn't assume the answer.””

Marcus looked toward the old house.

Vanessa had been using uncertainty as a weapon.

Whatever the truth about Maya's biological parentage, the records did not change the fact that he had raised her, loved her, and promised to protect her.

But he now understood why Vanessa wanted the original birth certificate.

She believed she could make him afraid of losing Maya.

She believed that fear would make him surrender everything.

She was wrong.

Marcus called Detective Hayes.

“Vanessa is trying to use disputed medical records to pressure me. She wants Maya's original birth certificate, but we don't know what she intends to do with it.””

“Do not hand over any documents. We're tracking the vehicle connected to her brother, and we've identified a possible location.””

“Where?””

“A property outside the city that belongs to a company associated with Daniel Mercer.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“That's where she's taking Maya?””

“We don't know yet. Stay available.””

For the next hour, Marcus waited in Olivia's living room while detectives worked.

He sat at the same kitchen table where Maya had decorated cookies the day before.

Her crayons remained scattered beside a half-finished drawing.

A yellow sun.

A blue house.

Three figures holding hands.

Marcus picked up the drawing.

At the bottom, in Maya's uneven handwriting, were the words:

*MY FAMILY IS SAFE.*

He pressed the paper against his chest.

Then Detective Hayes called.

“We've located Vanessa's vehicle at the property. Officers are approaching.””

Marcus stood.

“Is Maya there?””

“We believe so.””

“Please bring her home.””

“We're doing everything we can.””

Minutes passed.

Then the detective called again.

“Mr. Reed, we've found Maya. She's safe.””

Marcus's knees nearly gave way.

“Can I speak to her?””

“Not yet. We're making sure the scene is secure.””

He covered his mouth with his hand.

For the first time in days, he allowed himself to cry.

Then Hayes continued.

“Vanessa is in custody. Daniel Mercer is also present, and we're separating them for questioning.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Thank you.””

“There is one more thing. We found a sealed envelope in Vanessa's handbag. It's addressed to you.””

“What does it say?””

“We haven't opened it yet. But the outside contains a handwritten note.””

“What note?””

Detective Hayes paused.

“It's in Claire's handwriting.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

That was impossible.

Claire had been dead for three years.

Vanessa had taken Maya, threatened him, and demanded the birth certificate.

And now the police had found an envelope containing a note that appeared to have been written by his late wife.

“What does it say?”” Marcus asked again.

The detective read the words slowly.

*Marcus, if Vanessa has finally brought you this letter, then she has discovered the truth I tried to protect you from.*

Marcus felt the room tilt.

Hayes continued.

*Before you decide what to believe, you must learn who Maya's biological father really is.*

Marcus stopped breathing.

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the refrigerator.

Then he whispered, “What?””

Detective Hayes did not answer immediately.

“We're preserving the letter and will have it examined. I don't want you drawing conclusions before we verify its authenticity.””

Marcus understood.

He knew that.

But his mind had already returned to Claire's final months, the altered hospital records, the mysterious visits, and the fear she had hidden from him.

Maya was safe.

Vanessa was in custody.

The financial investigation was moving forward.

Yet the one question Marcus had never imagined asking now stood between him and the life he thought he understood.

May you like

Who was Maya's biological father?

And why had Claire believed that the truth needed to remain hidden?
