Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden in Maya’s Birth Certificate
Marcus read Vanessa’s message until the words blurred.
*Bring Maya’s original birth certificate.*
He stood in Olivia’s living room, the glow of his phone reflecting against his tired face. Upstairs, Maya was laughing softly at something her aunt had said, unaware that another piece of her world might be about to collapse.
Marcus had spent the last three days discovering that his wife had potentially stolen from his daughter, threatened her, and concealed information about Claire’s death.
Now Vanessa wanted a document that should have been nothing more than a record of Maya’s birth.
Why?
He called Detective Hayes.
“I received another message from Vanessa. She wants me to come home alone and bring Maya’s original birth certificate.””
“Do not go there alone,” Hayes replied immediately.
“And don't take Maya anywhere near that house until we've assessed the situation.””
“She says she has something I need to see.””
“Then we'll establish a safe way to obtain it. Mr. Reed, this could be a manipulation tactic, or she could have information relevant to the investigation. Either way, don't let her dictate the circumstances.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“What if the information concerns Maya?””
“Then we investigate it properly.””
After the call, he contacted Helen Foster, his attorney. She advised him to secure the original birth certificate, avoid altering or surrendering it, and preserve Vanessa's messages.
When he finally went upstairs, Maya was sitting cross-legged on Olivia's bed, arranging colored pencils in a neat row.
“Daddy!”” she exclaimed.
“Aunt Olivia says we can bake cookies tomorrow.””
Marcus managed a smile.
“That sounds wonderful.””
Maya studied his face.
“Are you sad again?””
He sat beside her.
“A little.””
“Because of Mommy?””
“Partly.””
She placed a pink pencil in his hand.
“Mommy liked pink.””
“She did.””
“Then you should keep that one.””
Marcus looked at the pencil.
A tiny, ordinary object.
Yet Maya had offered it as though she could somehow make his sadness smaller.
He kissed her forehead.
“Thank you, sweetheart.””
She leaned against him.
“Daddy, are we going to be okay?””
Marcus wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“Yes. And if we discover something difficult, we'll face it together.””
Maya nodded, apparently satisfied.
But when Marcus began to leave the room, she caught his sleeve.
“Daddy?””
“What's wrong?””
“Vanessa once asked me whether I remembered the hospital where I was born.””
He turned back.
“What?””
“She said she needed to check something for school. I told her I was born at St. Catherine's, but she got upset.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What did she say?””
Maya looked down.
“She said I should never talk about the hospital with anyone.””
He remained beside her until she fell asleep.
Then he went downstairs, took the folder containing Maya's birth certificate from his briefcase, and placed it in a locked drawer.
He did not know what Vanessa was searching for.
But he intended to find out without giving her another opportunity to frighten his daughter.
The following morning, Helen arranged for Marcus to attend a meeting at a neutral location. Detective Hayes would remain nearby, and every interaction would be documented.
Vanessa agreed to meet at a private conference room in Helen's office building.
She arrived at ten o'clock wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a leather handbag. Her makeup was immaculate. Her expression suggested she was attending a routine business appointment rather than a meeting connected to a possible criminal investigation.
When she saw Marcus, she smiled.
“Darling.””
He didn't return the greeting.
“Where is the document you want me to see?””
Vanessa glanced at Helen.
“I'd prefer to speak to my husband privately.””
“That's not happening,” Marcus replied.
Her smile vanished.
“You've changed.””
“No. I'm asking questions I should have asked years ago.””
Vanessa sat down and removed a manila envelope from her handbag.
“Do you remember the night Claire died?””
Marcus felt his jaw tighten.
“Every minute.””
“Then you remember she was in the hospital when you left.””
“Yes.””
“And you remember that you were told she had suffered a medical emergency.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa slid the envelope across the table.
“Then perhaps you should ask why Claire was so concerned about Maya's birth records.””
Marcus didn't touch it.
“What does this have to do with my daughter?””
“Everything.””
Helen leaned forward.
“Mrs. Reed, if you have information relevant to a possible crime, you should provide it without making threats or unsupported accusations.””
Vanessa gave a brittle laugh.
“Threats? I'm trying to help Marcus understand that the people he trusts have been lying to him.””
“Which people?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“Eleanor. Daniel. Perhaps even your own sister.””
Marcus felt anger flare in his chest.
“You will not drag my sister into this without evidence.””
“Then look at the documents.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of Maya's birth certificate, along with a hospital registration form and a page from an old medical file.
Marcus examined the birth certificate first.
The details were familiar. Maya Reed. Born ten years earlier at St.
Catherine's Medical Center. Mother: Claire Reed. Father: Marcus Reed.
Nothing appeared unusual.
Then he looked at the hospital form.
A handwritten note appeared near the bottom.
*Infant transferred from neonatal observation. Maternal identification verified by Eleanor Brooks.*
Marcus frowned.
“Why was Eleanor listed here?””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Ask her.””
“Eleanor wasn't Maya's doctor.””
“No. But she was present at the hospital.””
Marcus studied the medical page.
A second note had been added several days later.
*Conflicting information received concerning maternal medical history. Further review requested.*
His fingers went cold.
“What is this?””
Vanessa sat back.
“Claire believed something was wrong with the records. She asked Eleanor to investigate, and Eleanor refused to tell her what she'd found.””
Helen reached for the document.
“Mrs. Reed, where did you obtain these records?””
“From Claire's files.””
“Did you have permission to access them?””
Vanessa ignored her.
“Marcus, you have spent three years believing you knew everything about your daughter. But there are things Claire never told you.””
Marcus stared at the paperwork.
“Are you saying Maya isn't my biological daughter?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, she looked genuinely uncertain.
“I'm saying Claire was afraid you would ask that question.””
Marcus pushed back his chair.
“You're making an accusation about my child based on a photocopy you refuse to explain.””
“I'm showing you what Claire left behind.””
“No. You're trying to make me doubt my daughter.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Maybe you should have doubted Claire sooner.””
Marcus stood.
“That's enough.””
She grabbed his wrist.
“Wait. There's more.””
He pulled away.
“What?””
Vanessa took a second sheet from the envelope.
It was a handwritten note in Claire's familiar script.
If Marcus ever discovers the truth about Maya's birth, he must understand that the child is innocent. She did nothing wrong.
Marcus stared at the words.
The note contained no explanation, no date, and no indication of what truth Claire had feared.
But the final line was unmistakable.
Whatever happens, do not let anyone take her away from him.
Marcus felt his heart pounding.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I told you. Claire's files.””
Helen collected the documents and placed them in a folder.
“These will need to be authenticated. We won't draw conclusions from copies of uncertain origin.””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“You still don't believe me.””
“I believe that you're deliberately frightening me with information you haven't explained.””
Her lips trembled.
“After everything I've done for this family?””
Marcus stared at her.
“You made my daughter afraid to sit at breakfast. You threatened to send her away. You used her inheritance without permission, if the records are accurate. And now you're asking me to believe you're doing all this to protect her?””
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
“Then tell the truth.””
For a moment, she seemed ready to speak.
Instead, she picked up her handbag.
“You'll regret this.””
Helen stood.
“Mrs. Reed, I strongly advise you not to contact Maya directly while these concerns are being investigated.””
Vanessa turned toward the door.
“I'm still her stepmother.””
Marcus's voice stopped her.
“And I'm still her father.””
She left without another word.
Marcus remained in the conference room, staring at Claire's note.
Helen placed a hand on the folder.
“We need to verify the records independently. Nothing here establishes Maya's parentage.””
“I know.””
“And even if some detail in the medical file proves inaccurate, it wouldn't change your legal responsibilities as her father.””
Marcus looked up.
“She's my daughter. Nothing on a piece of paper changes that.””
Helen nodded.
“Then we'll proceed carefully.””
That afternoon, Marcus contacted the hospital's records department through his attorney. He requested the original birth and neonatal records, including any amendments or corrections.
The hospital acknowledged the request and said the relevant documents would be reviewed by its compliance team.
While they waited, Marcus returned to Olivia's house.
Maya was at the kitchen table decorating cookies with blue icing.
When she saw him, she held up a lopsided cookie shaped like a heart.
“I made this for you.””
Marcus took it carefully.
“It's perfect.””
“You have to eat it.””
“I wouldn't dream of doing anything else.””
She watched him take a bite.
Then she smiled.
“Daddy, why are you looking at me like that?””
He crouched beside her.
“Because I'm proud of you.””
“Even when I cry?””
“Especially when you cry and still find the courage to tell me what's wrong.””
Maya's eyes grew shiny.
She threw her arms around his neck.
“I love you, Daddy.””
Marcus held her tightly.
“I love you too. More than you'll ever know.””
For a few minutes, he allowed himself to believe that the truth, whatever it was, could not destroy the bond between them.
Then Helen called.
“The hospital has located the original file,” she said.
“There's a discrepancy between the original registration record and the later copy Vanessa gave us.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What kind of discrepancy?””
“A handwritten amendment was added to the file approximately three years after Maya's birth. It changed the recorded contact information and authorized access to restricted records.””
“Who signed it?””
Helen paused.
“That's the problem, Marcus. The signature doesn't belong to you or Claire.””
“Whose is it?””
Helen took a breath.
“The hospital believes it may belong to Vanessa.””
Marcus stared at Maya, who was carefully adding another blue heart to her cookie.
His wife had not merely found a strange document.
May you like
Someone had altered his daughter's medical records years after her birth.
And now Marcus needed to know why.
