Chapter 5: The Man From His Father’s Past
David couldn't move.
The man stood beneath the porch light as rain fell behind him.
His face was older than the photographs, but there was no mistaking him.
Thomas Reed.
The same man whose signature appeared on Stephie’s paperwork.
The same man Elena had blamed for destroying David’s father financially.
The same man she had apparently feared for years.
David tightened his grip on the door.
“You're Thomas Reed.””
Thomas gave a slow nod.
“Yes.””
“You're supposed to be dead.””
A bitter smile crossed the man's face.
“That is exactly what your father wanted people to believe.””
Elena stepped forward.
“David, close the door.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You've kept the truth from him long enough.””
“Leave.””
“No.””
David turned to his mother.
“Mom, what is he talking about?””
Elena's voice shook.
“You don't need to hear this.””
“Yes, I do.””
Thomas lifted his briefcase.
“I came here because someone has started using the trust.””
David looked at Stephie.
She looked terrified.
“Who?”” David asked.
Thomas pointed at her.
“Not her.””
Stephie flinched.
“Then who?””
“Her sister.””
David stared.
“Megan?””
Thomas nodded.
“She found the old records.””
“Why?””
“Because your father's money was never simply money.””
David looked at Elena.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas stepped inside without waiting for permission.
Elena blocked his path.
“You're not coming into this house.””
Thomas leaned closer.
“You still think you can protect him?””
“I protected him for twenty-six years.””
“You protected him from the truth.””
David stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both of them fell silent.
He looked at Thomas.
“Start talking.””
Thomas placed the briefcase on the table.
Inside were photographs, bank records, handwritten letters, and copies of legal documents.
David picked up the first photograph.
His father.
Elena.
Thomas.
All three were standing outside the same house.
But David had never seen it before.
“When was this taken?””
“Six months before your father died.””
David looked at his mother.
“You told me Dad barely knew him.””
“He did know him.””
Thomas spoke quietly.
“He knew me very well.””
David opened a letter.
The handwriting was his father's.
His hands started shaking.
*Elena,*
*If David ever asks what happened, tell him the truth. I trusted Thomas. I trusted the wrong people. But I never stopped believing my son deserved a clean start.*
David swallowed.
“What did he mean?””
Elena's tears fell.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Thomas answered.
“From the reason your father was ruined.””
David looked at him.
“Who ruined him?””
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Your uncle.””
David froze.
“My uncle died twenty years ago.””
“He didn't die.””
Silence.
Stephie covered her mouth.
“What?””
Thomas looked at David.
“Your uncle staged his death, disappeared with part of your father's money, and spent years building another identity.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
Thomas opened another folder.
A recent photograph slid onto the table.
A man in a dark coat stood outside a bank.
David stared at the photograph.
He knew that face.
Not personally.
But from Stephie’s family photographs.
He looked at Stephie.
“That's Megan’s father.””
Stephie backed away.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Her father is your uncle.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Stephie shook her head violently.
“You're lying.””
“Ask your sister where she was last Tuesday.””
David's phone buzzed.
A text from Megan.
*Stephie, get out of Elena’s house now.*
A second message arrived.
*He knows about Dad.*
Stephie’s breathing stopped.
David held up the phone.
“You knew?””
“I swear I didn't.””
Thomas reached into his briefcase.
“There’s one more document.””
He placed it in front of David.
David looked down.
It was the original trust agreement.
At the bottom was his father's signature.
Beside it was Elena’s.
And beneath both names was a handwritten sentence.
David read it slowly.
*My son must never marry anyone connected to the Reed family.*
He looked at Stephie.
She was crying.
“I didn’t know.””
David's voice was barely audible.
“Then why did your sister know?””
Stephie couldn't answer.
A car door slammed outside.
Everyone turned toward the window.
Headlights cut across the living room.
One.
Two.
Three cars.
Thomas looked toward the street.
“They found us.””
David's heart pounded.
“Who?””
Thomas closed the briefcase.
“The people who have been waiting for you to inherit.””
The front door suddenly shook under a violent knock.
Then a man's voice came from outside.
“David Marsh!””
Everyone froze.
The man shouted again.
“We know you're in there.””
Elena grabbed her son's arm.
Thomas whispered,
“Whatever happens next, do not let Stephie leave this house with her phone.””
David looked at Stephie.
She slowly lifted her eyes.
And then her phone began to ring.

The caller ID showed one name.
*Megan.*
