Amused

Chapter 1: The Ring Came Off

David was still wearing his wedding smile when his mother walked toward his new wife with tears of happiness in her eyes.

The ceremony had ended only minutes earlier.

White roses lined the aisle. Champagne glasses clinked in the reception hall. Their wedding photographer was already calling people into position for family pictures.

David stood beside Stephie, his hand resting lightly against her waist.

Then Elena, his mother, approached.

She was fifty-five, elegant in a simple navy dress she had bought after saving for months. Her hair was pinned neatly behind her ears, and the smile on her face was the kind only a mother could wear after watching her son finally get married.

She opened her arms.

Stephie stepped backward.

“Please don’t hug me,” she said.

The smile vanished from Elena’s face.

Stephie pinched her nose.

“You smell really dirty.””

The room seemed to lose all its sound.

David’s hand fell from Stephie’s waist.

Elena blinked.

“What?”” she whispered.

Stephie gave a small laugh, as if everyone should have understood she was being funny.

“I mean… you smell like sweat and old perfume.””

David stared at his wife.

“Stephie.””

She shrugged.

“Keep that passion away from me.””

A few guests shifted awkwardly.

One of the bridesmaids looked down at the floor.

Elena lowered her arms.

She tried to smile, but her lips trembled.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.””

David turned toward her immediately.

“Mom, you don’t need to apologize.””

Stephie rolled her eyes.

“Oh, baby, come on. It was just a joke.””

David looked back at her.

“What kind of joke makes my mother cry?””

Stephie crossed her arms.

“She’s being too sensitive.””

Elena turned her face away.

That hurt David more than the insult itself.

He remembered that face.

He had seen it when he was ten and she worked two jobs after his father left.

He had seen it when his school refused to let him participate in a field trip because the payment was overdue, and Elena quietly sold her gold necklace that evening.

He had seen it when she sat alone at the kitchen table after his college acceptance letter arrived, crying because she was proud and terrified at the same time.

But he had never seen her look so small.

David took one step toward his wife.

“Apologize.””

Stephie laughed again.

“David, we're literally standing at our wedding reception.””

“I know.””

“People are watching.””

“Then apologize in front of them.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You’re serious?””

“Completely.””

Stephie leaned closer.

“You’re choosing this moment to embarrass me?””

David’s jaw tightened.

“No. You did that yourself.””

Her eyes narrowed.

Elena touched his arm.

“David, please.””

He turned.

“Mom.””

“Don’t ruin your marriage because of me.””

Those words made his chest ache.

Stephie heard them and immediately softened her voice.

“See? Your mom understands.””

David looked at her.

For the first time since they met, there was no warmth in his eyes.

“There is something you still don't understand.””

“What?””

“She asked you for a hug.””

Stephie said nothing.

“She came to you with love.””

“She insulted my dress at the rehearsal dinner.””

Elena frowned.

“I said the fabric was beautiful.””

“You said it looked expensive.””

“Because it did.””

“Exactly.””

David stared at Stephie.

“That’s what this is about?””

She shook her head.

“You always defend her.””

“She is my mother.””

“And I’m your wife.””

“You became my wife twelve minutes ago.””

Several people gasped softly.

Stephie looked stunned.

David removed his hand from his pocket.

His fingers found the wedding ring box.

He opened it.

Stephie’s face changed.

“David?””

He reached for her hand.

“Take the ring off.””

Her voice dropped.

“What?””

“Take it off.””

She stared at him.

“You cannot be serious.””

“I have never been more serious in my life.””

Stephie grabbed the ring with trembling fingers.

“Then what?””

David gently took her hand.

She tried to pull away.

“David, stop.””

He removed the ring from her finger.

“David, please.””

He held it in his palm.

“I’ll apologize.””

He looked straight into her eyes.

“This wedding is over now.””

Stephie’s mouth fell open.

“You’re ending our marriage over a joke?””

“No,” David said.

“I’m ending it because this was not the first time you made my mother feel small. It was just the first time I refused to pretend I didn’t see it.””

A photographer lowered his camera.

Nobody moved.

Stephie’s eyes filled with panic.

“David, wait.””

He turned away.

She grabbed his sleeve.

“Please. Don’t walk away from me.””

David gently removed her fingers.

“I’m walking away from the woman who made my mother cry on the day she was supposed to welcome a daughter.””

Then he walked toward Elena.

His mother covered her mouth.

“David…”

He put his arm around her shoulders.

“You’re coming with me.””

Elena looked at the devastated bride.

“She’s your wife.””

“Not anymore.””

They walked toward the side doors.

Behind them, Stephie stood motionless in her wedding dress.

Then her phone buzzed.

She pulled it from her clutch.

One message.

From her older sister, Megan.

*Did you tell David about the house yet?*

Stephie stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Please tell me you got him to sign before his mother ruined everything.*

Stephie’s face went pale.

She quickly locked the phone.

But someone had already seen it.

And that someone was standing just three feet behind her.

Her new mother-in-law had stopped crying.

She was looking directly at the screen.

May you like

And she whispered one word.

“Megan?””
