Amused

Chapter 6: The Truth Daniel Never Told Me

For the rest of the night, I couldn’t sleep.

Richard’s words replayed in my head like a song I hated but couldn’t turn off.

The reason Daniel never adopted you isn’t the reason you think.

It was such a simple sentence.

But it carried a dangerous kind of power.

Because when someone wants to hurt you, they don’t always attack what you know.

Sometimes they attack what you love.

And Daniel was the one person I couldn’t imagine doubting.

But now there was a question sitting between us.

One I had never asked.

Why hadn’t he adopted me?

The next morning, I went back to Daniel’s house.

I didn’t call.

I didn’t text.

I just drove there.

The entire way, I told myself I wasn’t going because I believed Richard.

I was going because I needed the truth.

There was a difference.

At least, that was what I told myself.

Daniel opened the door wearing an old gray sweatshirt and holding a mug of coffee.

When he saw my face, his smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I stepped inside.

“I need to ask you something.””

His expression became careful.

“Okay.””

I closed the door behind me.

“Why didn’t you adopt me?””

The question hit him harder than I expected.

Not anger.

Not offense.

Pain.

Real pain.

He looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

And that silence scared me.

“Daniel?””

He walked to the kitchen table and sat down.

“Who told you to ask that?””

My stomach tightened.

“Richard.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“I thought so.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“It means he finally decided to use that.””

“Use what?””

“The one thing he knew could make you question me.””

I sat across from him.

“Then explain it.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

He took a breath.

“When you were six years old, your mother and I talked about adoption.””

I froze.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t it happen?””

Daniel looked down at his hands.

“Because your biological father refused.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Richard refused to sign the papers.””

The room became silent.

“But he left.””

“Yes.””

“And he still had that choice?””

Daniel nodded.

“Unfortunately.””

I felt anger rising.

“Why?””

Daniel sighed.

“Because he didn’t want to give up control.””

The word felt heavy.

Control.

Everything with Richard seemed to come back to that.

“Did he say that?””

“Not directly.””

“Then how do you know?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Because of the conversation we had.””

“You talked to him?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After he disappeared.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened?””

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he began.

“He came to the house one night.””

I listened carefully.

“Your mother was working. You were asleep upstairs.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the staircase.

“I remember sitting across from him at this exact table.””

“What did he say?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He said he heard we were considering adoption.””

“And?””

“He asked me what I wanted.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“He asked if I wanted to pretend I was your real father.””

My chest tightened.

“What did you say?””

“I told him I didn’t need to pretend.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I already loved you.””

I looked down.

A tear slipped onto my hand.

“What did he say?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“He said loving a child wasn’t enough.””

My heart sank.

“He said being a father was about blood.””

I closed my eyes.

The words felt familiar.

Because that was exactly what I had believed before the wedding.

That blood mattered.

That biology mattered.

That maybe I had been unfair to Richard.

But now?

Now I realized I had been unfair to Daniel.

“What happened next?””

Daniel looked away.

“He left.””

“Just like that?””

“Yes.””

“And you never tried again?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation caught my attention.

“You did.””

He looked surprised.

“How do you know?””

“Because you’re Daniel.””

A sad smile appeared.

“You know me too well.””

“So?””

He sighed.

“I tried.””

“How many times?””

“Three.””

“And?””

“Each time, Richard refused.””

I felt sick.

“He stopped you from adopting me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because you were a child.””

“You could have told me when I was older.””

“I could have.””

“Why didn’t you?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because I didn’t want you to hate him because of me.””

I stared at him.

“You protected him?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I protected you.””

Those words broke something inside me.

Because that was the difference.

Daniel’s choices were always about protecting me.

Richard’s choices were always about protecting himself.

I covered my face with my hands.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel reached across the table.

“For what?””

“For believing him.””

“You didn’t.””

“I did.””

“No.””

His voice was gentle but firm.

“You hoped.””

I looked up.

“There’s a difference.””

I cried then.

Not because of Richard.

Not even because of the adoption.

I cried because I realized how many times Daniel had quietly lost something and never asked me to notice.

He lost the legal title.

He lost the wedding walk.

He lost the public recognition.

And still, he stayed.

“I should have asked you.””

“About what?””

“About everything.””

Daniel smiled softly.

“Emma, you were busy growing up.””

“I should have known.””

“You shouldn’t have had to.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because he was right.

Children shouldn’t have to investigate who loves them.

They should feel it.

And I had.

For twenty-two years.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Another message from Melissa.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me open it.

Did you talk to Daniel?

I stared.

How did she know?

I typed:

Yes. Why?

Her response came quickly.

Because Richard is going to try to convince you Daniel abandoned you.

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Daniel.

“How did she know?””

He didn’t answer.

I showed him the message.

His expression darkened.

“Emma.””

“What?””

“Be careful.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard is scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Daniel looked at my phone.

“Of you finding out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I realized there was another layer.

Something beyond the adoption.

Something Richard was hiding.

A few minutes later, Melissa called.

I answered immediately.

“Melissa?””

Her voice sounded rushed.

“Emma, I need to tell you something before Richard finds out I contacted you again.””

“What is it?””

“There was a reason Richard suddenly became interested in your wedding.””

“I know about the photos.””

“No.””

She sounded serious.

“You don’t know everything.””

I stood.

“What else?””

“He wasn’t only trying to rebuild his image.””

“Then what?””

A pause.

Then:

“He was trying to impress someone.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Who?””

Melissa took a breath.

“Someone who was at your wedding.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

“I don’t know her personally.””

“Her?””

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“What woman?””

Melissa lowered her voice.

“The woman Richard is trying to marry.””

The room went completely still.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Marry?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why does my wedding matter?””

Melissa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because he needed proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Another pause.

Then:

“That he was a good father.””

I felt numb.

“He used my wedding to impress someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Melissa went silent.

Then she whispered:

“Your biological grandmother.””

I froze.

My biological grandmother.

Someone I had never met.

Someone Richard had apparently been trying to impress.

Someone who had been connected to my father’s life all along.

Then Melissa said one final thing.

Something that changed the entire story.

“She wasn’t just at your wedding.””

I held my breath.

“She was the person who paid for part of it.””

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly, the bill on the table wasn’t just about money.

May you like

It was about a family I never knew existed.

And a secret Richard had spent years trying to protect.
