Amused

Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Silence

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.

*The person who hurt Natalie has been living in your house for years.*

My first instinct was denial.

It had to be.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Daniel was many things.

A coward.

A man who ran when life became difficult.

A man who made choices I could never forgive.

But a murderer?

No.

My mind rejected it immediately.

Yet another part of me remembered something.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every time he told me he was “protecting” me.

Every time he chose silence.

I had spent years believing silence meant fear.

What if it meant guilt?

I walked down the hallway slowly.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

Every shadow felt like it was hiding something.

I stopped outside the guest room where Daniel was sleeping.

My hand hovered over the doorknob.

Then I heard his voice.

Quiet.

Almost like he was talking to someone.

I opened the door.

Daniel stood beside the window.

Phone pressed against his ear.

He froze when he saw me.

“Emily.””

I looked at the phone.

“Who are you talking to?””

He lowered it.

“Nobody.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He said nothing.

That was answer enough.

I stepped inside.

“Who was on the phone?””

Daniel looked away.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

That scared him more.

“I am done asking politely.””

He swallowed.

“What do you want to know?””

“The truth.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“The thing everyone keeps promising me but nobody gives me.””

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not older.

Broken.

“I didn’t hurt Natalie.””

I froze.

Because he didn’t say, “I don’t know what happened.””

He said:

“I didn’t hurt her.””

That meant he knew exactly what happened.

“How do you know I was thinking that?””

He looked at me.

“Because someone sent you a message.””

My blood ran cold.

“How did you know?””

Daniel’s face changed.

A second too late.

“I guessed.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You didn’t guess.””

He looked down.

“Emily…”

“Who sent it?””

Silence.

“Who sent it?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Anna.””

My heart stopped.

“The nurse?””

He nodded.

“How do you know her?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I worked with her.””

“When?””

“Four years ago.””

The room felt smaller.

“You told me you weren’t involved.””

“I wasn’t supposed to be.””

“Supposed to be?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“The adoption process was already complicated before the girls were born.””

“Because of Victoria?””

“Yes.””

“And Natalie?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel told me what happened in pieces.

Because apparently even now, the truth was too heavy to say all at once.

He had been assigned to handle the adoption paperwork for a private agency.

The same agency Victoria contacted when Natalie was pregnant.

“She wanted control,” Daniel said.

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Victoria knew Natalie was struggling. She knew Natalie didn’t have much support.””

“So she took advantage of her.””

Daniel nodded.

“But Natalie fought back.””

“How?””

“She refused to give up both babies.””

My chest tightened.

“Both?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward Maya’s room.

“She wanted to keep them.””

Daniel nodded.

“She changed her mind after she saw them.””

A painful silence followed.

“Then what happened?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Victoria discovered something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Something about Lily.””

I stared.

“What?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

His voice became frustrated.

“I was never told everything.””

“Then why were you involved?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I helped move the records.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“I didn’t know what I was moving.””

“You changed records.””

“No.””

He stood quickly.

“I moved sealed documents. I thought it was a legal issue.””

“But it wasn’t.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“By the time I understood, it was too late.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Too late is when you make one mistake and regret it.””

I pointed toward the bedrooms.

“This was years of choices.””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew I was right.

The next morning, I took Maya and Lily to the hospital.

I didn’t tell them why.

I couldn’t.

Children shouldn’t have to carry adult secrets.

But I needed answers.

The hospital basement was colder than I expected.

Old files.

Old records.

Old memories.

A place where people buried things they didn’t want found.

Natalie came with us.

She hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

Maya and Lily walked beside each other, holding hands.

That sight almost broke me.

Because despite everything…

they already loved each other.

They didn’t care about biology.

They didn’t care about paperwork.

They just knew they were sisters.

The basement door was locked.

But Anna had given me a key code.

When I entered it, the door opened.

Inside was a room full of archived files.

Natalie whispered:

“This is where they hid everything.””

We searched for almost an hour.

Then I found it.

A file marked:

*Bennett Twins — Original Records.*

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Inside were medical documents.

Birth records.

A handwritten note.

And one photograph.

I picked it up.

It was Natalie.

In the hospital.

Holding both babies.

But there was something written on the back.

*Two daughters. One truth.*

I turned the page.

The original birth certificate.

My eyes moved across the paper.

Then stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Natalie saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed her the document.

She read it.

Then she covered her mouth.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Emily…”

Her voice trembled.

“This isn’t possible.””

“What?””

She pointed.

“At the names.””

I looked down.

Two names.

Two babies.

But not the names I expected.

The record showed:

*Baby Girl Bennett — Lily Grace*

*Baby Girl Bennett — Maya Rose*

Everything seemed normal.

Until I saw the handwritten note underneath.

Added by the attending physician.

A warning.

A secret.

Something nobody wanted found.

I read the words slowly.

*DNA testing was requested before discharge due to concerns regarding parentage.*

My heart raced.

“Parentage?””

Natalie looked confused.

“Why would they test their DNA?””

I turned the page.

There was another report.

The result.

And when I read it, the entire world changed.

The girls were not just twins.

They shared the same mother.

The same father.

But the father’s name was not blank.

It was not unknown.

It was not missing.

It was written clearly.

*Daniel Bennett.*

I stared at the page.

My hands went numb.

“No.””

Natalie looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because Daniel had told me he was only the adoption coordinator.

He had told me he was just helping.

But the paper said something else.

Daniel wasn’t just involved.

He was their father.

The man who helped hide the truth.

The man who disappeared.

The man who had been raising Maya as her adoptive father.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice came immediately.

“Emily, where are you?””

I looked at the document in my hand.

“You tell me.””

Silence.

Then:

“You found it.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew I would find out eventually.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Stop saying that.””

A pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“There’s something you don’t understand.””

“What?””

His voice broke.

“I’m not Lily and Maya’s father.””

I stared at the paper.

“What?””

“The record was changed.””

My heart stopped.

“Then whose name is on the original?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“The man who tried to kill Natalie.””

The line went dead.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Natalie looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I looked back at the document.

At the name.

At the secret hidden for four years.

And I realized the truth was even darker than I imagined.

Because the question was no longer who Maya and Lily belonged to.

May you like

The question was:

Who was the man who wanted them gone?
