Amused

Chapter 5: The Child Behind the Photograph

I didn’t remember leaving the storage room.

I didn’t remember walking past Victoria.

I didn’t remember getting into my car.

All I remembered was the photograph.

The little girl with Maya’s face.

The little girl with Maya’s eyes.

The little girl who shouldn’t exist.

For four years, I had believed my daughter’s story began the day I brought her home.

Now I was standing in the middle of a nightmare where the first chapter of her life had been ripped away from me.

“Mommy?””

Maya’s voice pulled me back.

I looked in the rearview mirror.

She was sitting in her car seat, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her eyes were watching me carefully.

“You’re doing the sad thing again.””

My throat tightened.

I forced a smile.

“I’m okay, baby.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That tiny word hurt more than anything.

Because she was right.

I wasn’t okay.

Not because she wasn’t my daughter.

She was.

But because someone had stolen pieces of her story.

Pieces of my story.

Pieces of a little girl’s life that deserved to be known.

I reached back and held her hand.

“Do you remember Lily?””

Maya tilted her head.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“Have you ever heard that name?””

She looked confused.

“No.””

Then she became quiet.

Too quiet.

“Maya?””

She looked down.

“Grandma said I shouldn’t talk about her.””

My fingers tightened around the steering wheel.

“Talk about who?””

Maya’s voice became a whisper.

“The other girl.””

My heart stopped.

“What other girl?””

She looked toward the window.

“The girl who looks like me.””

I pulled into the driveway and saw Victoria’s car already parked outside.

My entire body went cold.

She had followed me.

Or she had been waiting.

Either way, she wasn’t done.

I turned around.

“Maya.””

“Yes, Mommy?””

“I need you to stay inside the car for one minute.””

Her face changed.

“Are you leaving me?””

“No.””

I reached over and kissed her forehead.

“Never.””

She nodded slowly.

I walked toward the house.

Every step felt heavier.

When I opened the front door, Victoria was standing in the living room.

Like she belonged there.

Like she had every right to invade every part of my life.

“You brought her home.””

My jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about her.””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“I spent years protecting her.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Protecting her?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Victoria turned back to me.

“From the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“The truth is that you lied.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“The truth is that everyone lied.””

“Everyone except you?””

She gave a small smile.

“You still don’t understand.””

I wanted to scream.

“I understand that my daughter was put in danger.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“I did not put Maya in that pit.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

For the first time, I saw something like regret.

“I wanted to know what she remembered.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“What?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

I stepped forward.

“What did you just say?””

She sighed.

“Maya saw something.””

My heart raced.

“She’s four.””

“Children remember more than adults think.””

I thought about the way Maya had whispered in the orchard.

She told someone something before you came.

“What did she see?””

Victoria looked at me.

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You trapped a child to interrogate her?””

“I never intended for her to fall.””

“But she did.””

Silence.

Then Victoria said something I never expected.

“I was afraid.””

I froze.

Victoria Hale admitted fear.

The woman who controlled everyone.

The woman who never apologized.

Afraid.

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of Lily.””

The name echoed through the room.

“Lily?””

Victoria nodded.

“She’s alive.””

I already knew.

But hearing it from her made it real.

“Where is she?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Where is she?””

Before she could respond, the front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

He stopped when he saw us.

“What are you doing here?””

His eyes moved between me and Victoria.

Then he saw my face.

He knew.

“You told her.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew too.””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

My heart cracked.

“You all knew.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You let me raise Maya while keeping this from me?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“Protecting me would have meant standing beside me.””

Daniel looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because he knew.

“You knew Natalie was alive.””

His silence answered.

“You knew about Lily.””

Another silence.

I laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe my life had become this.

“How many people were involved?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya appeared at the doorway.

“Mommy?””

My heart dropped.

She was holding her rabbit.

She looked at the three adults in the room.

And immediately became scared.

Victoria noticed.

Her expression softened slightly.

“Maya.””

My daughter moved closer to me.

“No.””

I stepped between them.

“You don’t get near her.””

Victoria looked hurt.

But then she said something that shocked me.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

I stared.

“Then what did you want?””

Victoria looked at Maya.

“I wanted to know if she remembered her sister.””

Maya’s face changed.

A tiny flicker.

Recognition.

I saw it.

Victoria saw it too.

“Maya?””

My daughter grabbed my hand.

“Mommy…”

Her voice trembled.

“I remember.””

The room went silent.

I knelt down.

“Remember what?””

Maya looked at Daniel.

Then Victoria.

Then me.

“The hospital.””

My heart pounded.

“What about the hospital?””

She hugged her rabbit tighter.

“There was another baby.””

Nobody moved.

“What baby?””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy, she was crying.””

A cold chill moved through me.

“Who was crying?””

“The baby with me.””

Victoria whispered:

“Lily.””

Maya nodded.

“She was in the room.””

I looked at Victoria.

“You knew she remembered.””

Victoria looked devastated.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you ask her?””

“I tried.””

“You scared her.””

Victoria looked down.

“I know.””

The admission shocked me.

But then Maya said something else.

Something that made every adult in the room go still.

“She wasn’t the only one crying.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Maya’s little fingers squeezed mine.

“There was a man.””

Daniel went pale.

“What man?””

Maya looked at him.

“He was yelling.””

Nobody breathed.

“What did he say?”” I asked.

Maya closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“He said…”

Her voice became smaller.

“He said the wrong baby had been taken.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel?””

His face had lost all color.

Because he knew something.

Something he had never told me.

Maya looked at him again.

“Daddy was there.””

The room froze.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

But Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at him.

“You were there.””

I turned slowly toward my ex-husband.

“You were at the hospital?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

My voice became colder.

“Daniel.””

He closed his eyes.

And when he finally spoke, his words shattered the last piece of trust I had left.

“I wasn’t just at the hospital.””

He looked at Maya.

“I was the person who took her home.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew about Lily.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“But I didn’t know which baby I was bringing you.””
