Chapter 9: My Sister Finally Confessed What Our Mother Had Been Planning
The following morning, Daniel arrived at the hospital carrying a leather briefcase and a thick folder of printed documents.
He waited until Maya's nurse had finished her check before sitting beside me.
"I've reviewed the materials Eleanor provided," he said.
"Some of the records are significant, but we need to separate what they prove from what they merely suggest.""
I nodded.
"What do we know?""
"The company documents show that your father intended to restrict informal access to certain business accounts. The attorney's correspondence supports that. We also have a record of the unauthorized withdrawals he was investigating.""
"Can we identify who made them?""
"We're working on it. Some transactions date back twelve years, and the bank records are incomplete. Eleanor has agreed to provide a formal statement and the original materials she retained.""
"What about the recording?""
Daniel placed a small digital recorder on the table.
"Eleanor provided the original file and a written explanation of how she obtained it. We'll preserve it and arrange for an appropriate review.""
I looked at the device.
"Can I listen to it?""
"Yes, but remember that a recording may provide context without answering every question. We shouldn't assume it establishes responsibility for your father's death.""
I nodded.
Daniel played the file.
At first, I heard my father's voice.
"I gave you access to the account because I trusted you, Patricia. I did not give you permission to move the money.""
My mother's voice followed.
"I was protecting the family.""
"From what?""
"From uncertainty. You keep talking about changing everything, and I need to know Chloe will be secure.""
"Chloe is my daughter. I'll provide for her. But this company is not a personal savings account for every problem in the family.""
"You're going to leave David in control of everything.""
"David has worked for this company since he was a teenager. He's earned that responsibility.""
"And what about me?""
"You'll be provided for. But you don't get to make financial decisions without oversight.""
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then my mother spoke in a voice I'd never heard before.
"If you take away my access, I'll have nothing.""
My father answered quietly.
"You have a home. You have money. You have two children who love you. What you won't have is unlimited control over my business.""
The recording ended abruptly.
I sat motionless.
Daniel closed the folder.
"This confirms that your father confronted your mother about financial access. It doesn't establish what happened after this conversation or explain his death. We'll need further evidence for that.""
I nodded.
My throat felt tight.
For twelve years, I'd believed my father had died before he could make any decisions about his business.
Now I knew he'd been trying to protect it from exactly the kind of interference I was facing.
"What about the unauthorized withdrawals?"" I asked.
"The records identify several transactions from a company account to an account controlled by your mother. We still need to establish the complete amount and whether any transfers were authorized under separate agreements.""
"Could the money have been legitimate payments?""
"Some could have been. That's why we're checking the records rather than making assumptions.""
I appreciated his caution.
I was angry enough to see every missing dollar as proof of betrayal.
But anger wasn't evidence.
Daniel continued.
"We also found a reference to an independent administrator your father intended to appoint. The appointment was never completed because he died before the scheduled meeting.""
"Who was it?""
"A firm that no longer operates under the same name. We're tracing its successor.""
I looked at Maya.
She had been listening quietly.
"Your father was trying to put safeguards in place," she said.
"Yes.""
"And your mother knew.""
"Yes.""
I rubbed my face.
"I spent twelve years believing she was the one holding the family together.""
Maya took my hand.
"She may have held it together in some ways. That doesn't excuse what she's done now.""
I nodded.
Daniel stood.
"I'll continue working on the records. In the meantime, I recommend that you keep communication with your mother in writing and avoid private confrontations. If she has relevant documents, we'll request them through the proper channels.""
After he left, I sat beside Maya until she finished breakfast.
Then my phone rang.
Chloe.
I answered.
"David, can we talk?""
"About what?""
"Everything.""
"Are you ready to tell the truth?""
She hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Then come to the hospital lobby. Don't bring Mom.""
"I won't.""
Twenty minutes later, Chloe appeared in the lobby wearing yesterday's sweater and no makeup. Her eyes were swollen, and she looked as though she hadn't slept.
I led her to a quiet seating area.
She sat down and placed both hands on her knees.
"I don't know where to start.""
"Start with the money.""
She swallowed.
"Mom told me the fourteen thousand dollars was partly a gift to her. She said you wanted her to have something for herself because she'd spent so many years raising us.""
"I transferred that money specifically for Maya and Liam.""
"I know that now.""
"You knew it before, too. You saw the message I sent.""
Chloe looked down.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you take the money?""
"Because Mom said she would replace it before you returned.""
"With what?""
"I don't know.""
"Chloe.""
She began crying.
"She said she'd arrange a loan against the company. She said the ownership documents were temporary and that once the transfer went through, she'd use the money to cover everything.""
I stared at her.
"She planned to take a share of my company to pay for a vacation?""
"No. She said the vacation was separate.""
"Then what was the transfer for?""
Chloe rubbed her face.
"She said she needed financial security. She was afraid you would stop supporting her once you had a child.""
I leaned back.
"She already has a home. She has savings. I have never refused to help her when she's needed something.""
"She said it wasn't enough.""
"Enough for what?""
"She wanted a permanent share of the company. She said if something happened to you, she'd have no control over what happened to the family.""
I stared at my sister.
"Did she ever say she wanted me to die?""
Chloe's head snapped up.
"No! David, no. She never said that.""
"Then why was she so determined to transfer the shares without my consent?""
"Because she thought you'd refuse.""
"And why did she want to make Maya look dishonest?""
Chloe looked away.
"Because of the inheritance.""
I waited.
She took a trembling breath.
"Mom believed Maya had money that should have gone to the family. She said your father had always wanted us to share everything equally, and that Maya was keeping money from us while you paid for all our expenses.""
"That isn't true.""
"I know.""
"Did you know it when you helped her?""
Chloe nodded.
"Yes.""
The admission hung between us.
I felt a familiar ache in my chest, the pain of realizing that someone you love has understood exactly what they're doing and chosen to do it anyway.
"Why, Chloe?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Because I was jealous.""
I said nothing.
She continued.
"You always rescued me. Whenever I made a mistake, you helped me fix it. When I couldn't pay my bills, you sent money.
When Mark's business failed, you lent us money. I thought that was what you would always do.""
"And when I married Maya?""
"You changed.""
"I became a husband.""
"I know that now. But Mom kept telling me you were abandoning us. She said Maya was taking your attention, your money, and eventually the company.""
"So you decided to take it first.""
Chloe covered her face.
"I thought if I had a stake in the business, I wouldn't have to worry about losing everything.""
"You wanted security at the expense of my wife and son.""
"I know.""
"No, I don't think you do.""
I stood.
Chloe looked up, panicked.
"David, please. I came here because I want to help.""
"Then help.""
She took a breath.
"Mom has the original paperwork. She keeps it in a locked cabinet in her bedroom at home. She also has a small black notebook with account numbers and dates.""
"What notebook?""
"She calls it her backup ledger. She says she keeps track of everything she does for the family.""
"Everything?""
"Money transfers. Loans. Payments.
Favors. She writes down what people owe her.""
I stared at Chloe.
"She keeps a record of favors?""
"Yes. She says people forget what they've been given, so she writes it down.""
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Of course she does.""
Chloe leaned forward.
"There's something else. Mom said she used the notebook to prove your father owed her money before he died.""
My heart pounded.
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know. But I heard her talking to someone about the old account. She said the withdrawals weren't theft because she was only taking what she was owed.""
"Did she identify the account?""
"No.""
"Who was she talking to?""
"I think it was Mark.""
I stared at her.
"Your husband?""
Chloe nodded.
"He's been helping Mom with the paperwork. He knows more about the company than I do. He said he could make the transfer look legitimate if the documents were worded correctly.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did Mark prepare the ownership documents?""
"I think so.""
"Did he forge my signature?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he forge Maya's?""
Chloe started crying again.
"I don't know, David. I swear.""
I took a slow breath.
"Then you need to tell Daniel everything you've told me.""
"I will.""
"And you need to stop protecting Mom.""
Chloe looked down.
"I don't know how.""
"Start by refusing to lie for her.""
She nodded.
I returned to Maya's room with Chloe beside me.
Maya was awake, and when she saw my sister, she immediately stiffened.
Chloe stopped at the doorway.
"Maya, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. But I need to apologize.""
Maya said nothing.
Chloe took a small step forward.
"I should have helped you. I should have brought you food and made sure you had what you needed. Instead, I listened to Mom and convinced myself you were exaggerating.""
Maya's eyes filled.
"You saw me struggling.""
"I know.""
"You saw me asking for help.""
"I know.""
"And you left anyway.""
Chloe lowered her head.
"Yes.""
Maya looked toward the window.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then Maya said, "I don't know if I can forgive you.""
Chloe nodded.
"I understand.""
"But I want you to tell the truth. Not because it will make you feel better. Because Liam deserves to grow up knowing that the people around him will protect him.""
Chloe began to cry.
"I will.""
I took my sister back into the hallway and called Daniel.
I told him about the notebook, the locked cabinet, and Mark's possible involvement in the ownership documents.
Daniel asked Chloe to provide a written account and preserve every message she had exchanged with Patricia and Mark. She agreed.
Then he gave me an update on the financial records.
"We've traced part of the money your father was investigating," he said.
"Several transfers were made to an account associated with your mother. Some of the funds were later moved into an account connected to Mark's former business.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much?""
"The confirmed amount is still being reviewed. We can't yet determine whether every transfer was unauthorized.""
"But there is a connection.""
"Yes.""
I looked through the glass window at Maya.
"Can we recover the money?""
"Potentially, depending on the legal ownership, the records, and the applicable time limits. We need to establish what happened before making promises.""
I thanked him.
After the call, Chloe stood beside me, twisting her wedding ring.
"David, there's something I need to tell you about the night Dad died.""
I turned.
"What?""
"Mom told us he had collapsed while she was asleep. She said she'd called for help as soon as she found him.""
"That's what I remember.""
Chloe shook her head.
"But I woke up that night because I heard them arguing. I went downstairs, and Dad was standing in the kitchen. Mom was holding a folder.""
My pulse quickened.
"What did they say?""
"I couldn't hear everything. But Dad said, 'If you don't return it, I'll tell the lawyer tomorrow.''"
I felt the hallway tilt around me.
"What did Mom say?""
Chloe's voice dropped.
"She said, 'You can't do that to me after everything I've sacrificed.''"
I stared at my sister.
"What happened next?""
"I went back upstairs. I was seventeen, David. I was scared. I didn't know what they were arguing about.""
May you like
"Did you see Dad afterward?""
"No.
