Chapter 6: The Secret Account My Mother Used Against My Wife
I drove back to the hospital with the bank statement on the passenger seat.
I didn't turn on the radio.
I didn't answer my mother's calls.
I didn't respond to Chloe's messages.
All I could hear was Maya's voice repeating the same sentence.
That money was the reason your mother never wanted me to marry you.
When I entered her room, Maya was awake, sitting against the pillows with her hands folded in her lap.
She looked at the statement in my hand.
Then she looked at me.
"Are you angry?""
I pulled the chair beside her bed.
"I'm confused.""
She nodded slowly.
"That's fair.""
"Why didn't you tell me about the account?""
Maya looked toward the window.
"Because it wasn't mine to spend.""
I frowned.
"Whose was it?""
"My father's.""
She swallowed.
"He died when I was twenty-four. Before he passed, he arranged for part of his estate to be placed in an account under my name. The money was meant to help me buy a home or start a family someday.""
I looked down at the statement.
"Eighty-seven thousand dollars?""
"That was the balance when we got married. There may have been a little more later, but I never touched it.""
"Why not?""
"Because my father left it to me with one condition.""
"What condition?""
"That I use it only for something that would give me long-term security. He didn't want me spending it to impress anyone or solve other people's problems.""
I sat back.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Maya's eyes filled.
"Because your mother found out about it before our wedding.""
I felt a familiar tension settle in my chest.
"How?""
"She asked me about my father's estate when we were engaged. At first, I thought she was just curious. Then she asked whether I'd be willing to use the money to help Chloe and Mark buy a house.""
I stared at her.
"What did you say?""
"I told her I couldn't. The money was in a restricted account, and I didn't want to spend my father's inheritance on someone else's home.""
Maya rubbed her hands together.
"Your mother became furious. She said I was selfish, that I was joining the family but refusing to contribute to it.""
"Did you tell me about that conversation?""
"No. I was afraid you'd think I was trying to create problems between you and your mother before we even got married.""
I lowered my head.
I could picture Patricia at the kitchen table in her old house, speaking with the absolute certainty that had intimidated everyone around her for decades.
She had always been generous with other people's money.
When I bought my first car, she told me I should let Chloe use it whenever she needed it. When I received my first substantial bonus, she suggested I pay off Mark's credit cards. When I purchased my apartment, she asked whether I could put Chloe's name on the deed so she would have somewhere to stay if her marriage failed.
I'd said no to the apartment.
I'd said yes to the credit cards.
I'd never realized that every refusal had become another grievance.
"What happened after you refused to give her the money?"" I asked.
Maya looked down.
"She told me that if I married you, she'd make sure I regretted it.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"What exactly did she say?""
Maya took a breath.
"She said you were a good man, but you were too loyal to your family to see when someone was using you. She said that once we were married, she'd find a way to prove I wasn't the woman you thought I was.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me that?""
"Because she was your mother. And because I thought she'd eventually accept me.""
Maya wiped a tear from her cheek.
"I didn't want to be the reason you lost your relationship with her.""
I reached for her hand.
"You didn't cause any of this.""
"But the account—"
"Your father's money is yours. You don't owe my sister a house.""
Maya shook her head.
"Your mother doesn't see it that way.""
"I know.""
She looked at the statement.
"Did she tell you I was planning to leave you?""
"She left a note in the folder. Daniel says a letter submitted with the ownership documents makes that claim.""
Maya closed her eyes.
"Of course she did.""
"Did you ever consider leaving me?""
The question came out before I could stop it.
Maya opened her eyes.
For a moment, she looked wounded.
Then she answered honestly.
"Not because I stopped loving you. But there were nights when I wondered whether I could keep living in a family where I had to prove I deserved kindness.""
I felt the words land.
She continued.
"I never planned to take your money. I never planned to leave with Liam. I wanted you home. I wanted us to be a family.""
I took her hand in both of mine.
"I'm sorry I wasn't here.""
She shook her head.
"You were working.""
"I should have listened more carefully.""
"You trusted your mother.""
"And I was wrong.""
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she leaned forward and rested her forehead against my shoulder.
I held her gently, careful not to disturb the healing incision.
We stayed that way until a nurse knocked and entered to check her observations.
After she left, I called Daniel.
"Maya has explained the account. It was an inheritance from her father, established before our marriage. She never used it.""
"Can we document that?""
"She can provide the estate paperwork.""
"Good. We should obtain the account's official statements and the original trust or estate documents. That will help establish the source of the money and whether anyone accessed it.""
I glanced at Maya.
"She's willing to cooperate.""
"Then we'll handle it carefully. Also, the letter accusing her of planning to leave you appears to have been submitted with the same batch of documents that named Chloe as a beneficiary.""
"Does the letter identify its author?""
"Not directly. But it includes a contact address associated with your mother's home.""
I exhaled slowly.
"Send me everything.""
"I will. And David, don't confront your mother about the account until we've preserved the evidence.""
"I won't.""
When the call ended, Maya looked at me.
"Do you think she did all of this because of the inheritance?""
"I think the inheritance explains why she was angry with you. It doesn't yet explain everything she did.""
Maya nodded.
"There's something else.""
I turned toward her.
"Tell me.""
"Your mother asked me to sign a paper on the day I came home from the hospital.""
"What paper?""
"She said it was a household authorization form. She told me you wanted her to handle the bills while you were overseas.""
"Did you sign it?""
Maya shook her head.
"No. I asked to read it first. She snatched it away and said I was being difficult.""
"Do you remember what it looked like?""
"It was several pages long. The first page had your company name at the top. I saw Chloe's name on one of the pages.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she leave it here?""
"I don't know. She took it with her.""
I wrote down every detail.
Then Maya reached for her phone.
"There's something else you should see.""
She opened her photographs and scrolled back through the images she'd taken before the baby was born.
She stopped at a photograph of our study.
I'd taken the picture myself weeks earlier, showing Maya the new shelves I'd installed.
In the background, the blue folder sat on my desk beside a stack of company contracts.
Maya zoomed in.
"Look at the paper on top.""
I leaned closer.
It was a document bearing my signature.
But the date was visible.
The paper had been signed six months earlier.
I recognized it immediately.
It was a limited authorization allowing our company's accountant to discuss routine tax matters with my mother. I'd signed it because Patricia had volunteered to help organize some paperwork during a busy quarter.
It did not authorize her to transfer ownership of any business assets.
I stared at the photograph.
"She had access to this document.""
Maya nodded.
"She told me it proved she could make decisions for your company.""
I felt a wave of anger, followed by something worse.
Shame.
I'd given my mother a small amount of authority because it was convenient. I'd never imagined she would treat that access as permission to control my business.
"David," Maya said softly, "I think she believes she has a right to everything you own.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Maybe she believes she has a right to decide who deserves it.""
My phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Chloe.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
"David, please don't hang up.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Mom says you've found the inheritance statement.""
"Yes.""
"She says Maya lied to you about it.""
"Did she?""
Silence.
"Chloe.""
"I don't know what happened with the account.""
"But you knew about it.""
"Mom told me before the wedding.""
I closed my eyes.
"What did she tell you?""
"That Maya was hiding money from you. That she wanted to marry you for security but wouldn't help the family.""
"That's not true.""
"I know that now.""
The words startled me.
"What do you mean?""
Chloe's voice dropped.
"Mom told me Maya had agreed to give me some of the money after the wedding. She said Maya had promised it, then changed her mind.""
"Did Maya ever promise you that?""
"No.""
"Then why did you believe Mom?""
"Because she said she had proof.""
"What proof?""
"I never saw it. She said Maya had written a letter agreeing to help us buy a house.""
I stared at the wall.
"Did you ever ask Maya about it?""
"No.""
"Did you ever ask me?""
"No.""
"Then you chose to believe a story that gave you access to money you wanted.""
Chloe began to cry.
"I didn't know Mom would go this far.""
"You went to Miami while Maya was recovering from surgery.""
"I thought she had help!""
"You spent money intended for my newborn.""
"Mom told me it was her money!""
"It was my money, Chloe. I transferred it for a specific purpose.""
She said nothing.
I waited.
Finally, she whispered, "I'm sorry.""
I wanted to believe her.
But an apology without honesty was only another attempt to escape consequences.
"Did you know about the ownership transfer?""
Chloe inhaled sharply.
"Mom said it was a temporary arrangement. She said you would approve it once you understood how much she'd sacrificed for you.""
"Did you sign anything?""
"No.""
"Did you prepare any documents?""
"No.""
"Did you use Maya's email?""
A long silence followed.
Then Chloe said, "I used her tablet once.""
My pulse quickened.
"When?""
"Last week. Mom asked me to help her send an email because Maya was asleep.""
"What did you send?""
"I don't know. Mom had the documents. She told me what to type.""
"Did you submit the ownership transfer?""
"No. I only sent an email.""
"To whom?""
"I don't remember.""
I gripped the phone.
"Chloe, you need to understand how serious this is.""
"I know.""
"Then tell me everything you remember.""
She began speaking quickly.
"Mom had a folder with the company papers. She said she needed to get the documents submitted before you returned. She said the accountant would question them if you were there to answer questions.""
"Why was she transferring my assets to you?""
"She said it was to protect the family.""
"Protect it from what?""
"From Maya.""
I looked at Maya, who was listening silently.
"What did Mom say Maya had done?""
"She said Maya was planning to leave you after the baby was born. She said she'd take the inheritance and then try to claim part of your company.""
"Did you believe her?""
"I did at first.""
"And now?""
Chloe's voice cracked.
"Now I don't know what to believe.""
I leaned back in my chair.
"You can start by telling the truth.""
"I will.""
"Then send Daniel every message you have from Mom about the documents and the money. Don't delete anything.""
"Okay.""
"And Chloe?""
"Yes?""
"You don't get to decide that being sorry means everything is forgiven.""
She began crying again.
"I understand.""
I ended the call.
Maya watched me.
"Do you think she'll help?""
"I think she's frightened.""
"That's not the same thing.""
"No," I admitted.
"It isn't.""
A few minutes later, an email arrived from Chloe.
It contained a series of screenshots showing messages between her and Patricia.
I opened the first.
*Patricia:* Maya has eighty-seven thousand dollars sitting in an account she refuses to share. After everything we've done for David, she owes this family something.
The next message came two days later.
*Chloe:* What if David finds out?
*Patricia:* He won't. By the time he does, the documents will already be processed.
I scrolled.
Another message appeared.
*Chloe:* What about Maya's signature?
*Patricia:* I have a copy of it. She signed enough paperwork when she was tired. Nobody will question it.
My fingers went cold.
Then I opened the final screenshot.
It had been sent at 10:43 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
*Patricia:* Once the transfer is complete, we'll tell David that Maya tried to move the money first. He'll have no reason to believe her.
Beneath it, Chloe had replied:
*What if she tells him about the inheritance?*
Patricia's answer was chillingly simple.
*Then we'll make sure he thinks she stole it.*
I sat motionless, staring at the screen.
My mother had not merely tried to take control of my company.
She had planned to destroy my wife's credibility before I could discover what she had done.
The inheritance was the weapon she'd intended to use.
The neglected newborn, the empty refrigerator, the freezing apartment, the false documents—all of it had been wrapped in a story designed to make Maya look greedy and unstable.
And Chloe had known enough to help.
I forwarded the screenshots to Daniel.
Then I looked at Maya.
"Now we have something concrete.""
She nodded, but her eyes were distant.
"David, I need you to promise me something.""
"Anything.""
"If your mother comes back, don't let her speak to Liam alone.""
I felt a sharp ache in my chest.
"I promise.""
Maya reached for my hand.
"Because she told me something before you came home. She said that if I ever tried to take Liam away from her, she'd make sure I never saw him again.""
I stared at her.
"She said that?""
May you like
Maya nodded.
"She told me she knew people who could make
