Amused

Chapter 3: The Money Nobody Wanted Me to Find

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Jordan stood near the front door, holding his shopping bag.

Denise stared at him.

Maya stood beside me, her phone still in my hand.

I looked at my stepson.

"What account?""

Jordan's eyes widened.

"Nothing.""

Denise immediately stepped forward.

"Jordan, go upstairs.""

He looked between us.

"Mom—"

"NOW.""

Jordan put the shopping bag down.

"Fine.""

He walked toward the staircase, but I stopped him.

"Jordan.""

He turned.

"You're twenty-six years old. If there's something involving my money, I think I deserve an explanation.""

Denise laughed nervously.

"Marcus, please. This is getting ridiculous.""

I didn't look at her.

"Jordan, what account were you talking about?""

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"I thought you knew.""

"Knew what?""

Denise stepped between us.

"He doesn't know what he's saying.""

Jordan frowned.

"Mom, you told me Dad knew.""

The room went silent.

I slowly turned toward my wife.

"Tell me what?""

Denise crossed her arms.

"Marcus, we can discuss this privately.""

"No. We can discuss it now.""

She looked toward Maya.

"This is a family matter.""

I almost laughed.

"She's my family.""

Denise's jaw tightened.

Jordan finally spoke.

"It's the household account.""

I looked at him.

"What about it?""

He hesitated.

"Mom has been using it.""

"Using it for what?""

He glanced at Denise.

Then he looked down.

"Some transfers.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How much?""

Jordan swallowed.

"I don't know exactly.""

Denise snapped.

"That's enough!""

But I had already heard enough to know something was wrong.

I opened my banking application.

Our joint household account was funded primarily by my salary.

I had set it up years earlier to cover groceries, utilities, insurance, and ordinary family expenses.

Denise had access because I trusted her.

I scrolled through the recent transactions.

At first, everything looked normal.

Electricity.

Internet.

Groceries.

Insurance.

Then I noticed a recurring transfer.

$650.

Every month.

The recipient was an account I didn't recognize.

I frowned.

"What's this?""

Denise looked over my shoulder.

"Household expenses.""

I turned the phone toward her.

"Why are household expenses being transferred to a personal account?""

She folded her arms.

"I manage the household. I don't have to explain every transaction.""

I looked at the account details.

The recipient's name was Jordan.

I stared at him.

"Why am I transferring six hundred and fifty dollars to you every month?""

Jordan looked uncomfortable.

"Mom said it was part of the arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

Denise stepped forward.

"Marcus, I was helping him get established.""

"With my money?""

"Our money.""

I shook my head.

"No. My salary goes into that account. Your salary doesn't.""

Her expression hardened.

"That's an ugly thing to say.""

"Then explain the transfers.""

She looked at Jordan.

He remained silent.

I scrolled further.

There were transfers to Brianna too.

Three hundred dollars.

Four hundred.

Sometimes five hundred.

Every month.

I looked at my wife.

"How long has this been happening?""

Denise sighed.

"Since last year.""

"Last year?""

"It wasn't a big deal.""

I stared at the screen.

"That's over ten thousand dollars.""

She shrugged.

"Your children needed help.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"My children?""

She looked annoyed.

"You know what I mean.""

I turned toward Jordan.

"Did you know this money was coming from my account?""

Jordan shifted uncomfortably.

"Mom told me it was money you had set aside for us.""

I looked at Denise.

"You told him that?""

She raised her voice.

"I was trying to make sure my children had opportunities!""

I slowly put my phone down.

"And what about Maya?""

Denise's expression changed.

"What about her?""

"Did you ever set aside money for her?""

She laughed.

"She doesn't need it.""

Maya looked up.

"I never asked you for anything.""

Denise turned toward her.

"Nobody is talking to you.""

I stepped forward.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

My wife threw her hands up.

"This is unbelievable! I have spent five years trying to hold this family together while you constantly prioritize Angela's daughter!""

The room went completely still.

I stared at her.

"Angela's daughter?""

Denise seemed to realize what she had said.

But she didn't apologize.

Instead, she continued.

"Every time Maya has a problem, you drop everything. Every time Jordan needs something, you question it. Every time Brianna needs help, you make me justify it.""

I shook my head.

"Because you have been using my money without telling me.""

"You're her father. You're supposed to provide for her!""

"And I do.""

"Then why is she still living here?""

I looked at Denise.

"Because she has a home here.""

Denise laughed bitterly.

"She has a home because I allowed it.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"You're saying you allowed my daughter to live in my house?""

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Maya quietly stepped forward.

"Dad, I think you should see something.""

She opened her phone again.

This time, she showed me a screenshot of a message exchange from the previous week.

The conversation was between Denise and Brianna.

I read it slowly.

*Denise:* Your father is becoming suspicious about household spending.

*Brianna:* What do you want me to do?

*Denise:* Nothing. Just don't mention the transfers.

*Brianna:* What about Maya?

*Denise:* I'm handling her. Once she's gone, things will be easier.

I read the final message.

*Brianna:* Does Dad know why you want her out?

*Denise:* He doesn't need to know. That money was never meant for her anyway.

I looked up.

"Where did you get this?""

Maya's voice was quiet.

"Brianna sent it to me.""

Denise went pale.

"She had no right to send you that.""

I looked at Maya.

"Why didn't you show me earlier?""

She swallowed.

"Because I didn't understand what it meant.""

Then she hesitated.

"And because Denise told me not to interfere with her children's finances.""

I turned toward my wife.

"What money was never meant for Maya?""

Denise shook her head.

"This conversation is over.""

"No.""

"Marcus, I'm warning you.""

I stepped closer.

"So am I.""

She stared at me.

For the first time, the confident expression I had known for years was gone.

Jordan picked up his shopping bag.

"Maybe I should go.""

I looked at him.

"Sit down.""

He hesitated.

"Marcus—"

"Sit down, Jordan.""

He slowly placed the bag back on the floor.

I opened the account details again.

There was another section I had never examined.

Scheduled transfers.

I tapped it.

Three recurring payments appeared.

One to Jordan.

One to Brianna.

And one to a third account.

The name beside it was unfamiliar.

But the monthly amount made my stomach drop.

$1,200.

I turned the phone toward Denise.

"Who is this?""

She didn't answer.

I read the account holder's name.

"Denise, who is Claire Whitmore?""

Her face lost what little color remained.

Jordan looked up sharply.

"Mom?""

I stared at my wife.

"Who is Claire?""

Denise reached for my phone.

I pulled it away.

"Don't touch that.""

She lowered her voice.

"Marcus, please.""

It was the first time she had sounded afraid.

I tapped the transfer history.

The payments had been going out for fourteen months.

Sixteen thousand eight hundred dollars.

I looked at her.

"Why have you been sending this woman twelve hundred dollars every month?""

Denise's eyes filled with tears.

But she wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at Jordan.

And Jordan suddenly looked as though he wanted to disappear.

"Mom," he whispered, "you said Dad would never find out.""

My heart began pounding.

I turned toward him.

"Find out what?""

Jordan swallowed hard.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Claire isn't just someone Mom knows.""

He looked at Denise.

"She's the woman who has been helping Mom transfer the money out of the house.""

I stared at him.

"Transfer it where?""

Jordan lowered his voice.

"To the property.""

I frowned.

"What property?""

Denise closed her eyes.

Jordan looked at me again.

"The house Mom has been buying behind your back.""

For a moment, I couldn't process the sentence.

My wife had been transferring money from our household account.

She had been supporting her children with funds I thought were being used for family expenses.

And now I was being told she had been purchasing property without my knowledge.

I looked at Denise.

"Is that true?""

She didn't answer.

I took a step closer.

"Denise. Is that true?""

Finally, she opened her eyes.

"Marcus, I was protecting my children's future.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"What about mine?""

She looked away.

Then Jordan spoke again.

"There's something else, Marcus.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He hesitated before reaching into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone, opened an email, and held it toward me.

"I wasn't supposed to show you this.""

I took the phone.

The email contained a scanned document from a real estate attorney.

The subject line read:

*TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP — BENNETT FAMILY PROPERTY.*

I began reading.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

My name was there.

So was Denise's.

But underneath our names was a third name I recognized immediately.

Maya Bennett.

I looked up.

"Why is my daughter's name on a property transfer?""

Denise started crying.

And before she could answer, Jordan whispered:

"Because the property isn't the one Mom bought for herself.""

He swallowed.

"It's the house she wants to sell.""

I looked back at the document.

The address was familiar.

Too familiar.

It was the address of the house I had inherited from my late mother—the property I had always intended to leave to Maya.

And someone had already begun preparing the paperwork to transfer it.

*Without telling me.*
