Amused

Chapter 6: Laura's Last Warning

I read the letter four times.

The handwriting was unmistakably Laura's.

The capital M in my name leaned slightly to the right. Her lowercase letters were small and neat. She always pressed harder on the final stroke of a sentence.

I'd seen that handwriting on birthday cards, grocery lists, anniversary notes, and the little reminders she used to leave beside my coffee.

But this letter was different.

It was dated three months before she died.

And she'd written it specifically for me.

I called Maya.

"Where did you find this?""

"In the blue folder I told you about.""

"Where is the folder now?""

"Under my mattress.""

I closed my eyes.

"Keep it there. Don't let anyone take it.""

"Okay, Dad.""

"Are you alone?""

"Yes.""

"Lock your bedroom door.""

She paused.

"Is something bad happening?""

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at the letter.

"I don't know yet, sweetheart. But we're going to make sure you're safe.""

After I ended the call, Daniel pulled his chair closer.

"Read it aloud.""

I unfolded the paper.

*Marcus,*

*If you're reading this, I may not be there to explain everything myself. I wish I could sit beside you and tell you this in person, but there are things I need to put in writing while I still have the strength.*

I stopped.

My throat had tightened.

Daniel waited.

I continued.

*My father created a family trust before he died. He wanted the property in Franklin County to remain in the family, and he specifically wanted Maya to benefit from it when she became an adult.*

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded for me to continue.

*The property was never meant to become part of anyone else's inheritance. It belongs to Maya's future, and I have made arrangements to protect her interest.*

My hands trembled.

*There are documents proving this. They are kept separately from the regular estate paperwork. I have placed copies in a sealed envelope with the attorney who handled my father's trust.*

Daniel leaned forward.

"Does she name the attorney?""

I continued reading.

*His name is Robert Ellison. His office is on West Broad Street. He knows exactly what my father intended. If anyone ever tries to change the trust, transfer the property, or use Maya's inheritance without her consent, contact him immediately.*

I stopped.

Daniel wrote the name down.

"Robert Ellison," he repeated.

I continued.

*One more thing, Marcus. Please don't let anyone convince you that protecting Maya means treating her differently from other children. She has already lost enough. She deserves a childhood without having to earn her place in a family.*

I couldn't continue.

The paper lowered in my hands.

Laura had known.

Maybe not about Denise specifically.

Maybe not about the exact things that were happening now.

But she'd known that Maya might someday have to fight for what belonged to her.

And she'd tried to prepare us.

I pressed the letter against my forehead.

For a moment, I was back in our old kitchen.

Laura was sitting across from me in her blue cardigan.

Her hair was shorter from chemotherapy.

She was smiling despite the pain.

"Promise me you'll keep her safe.""

"I promise.""

Now, years later, I was trying to keep that promise while staring at evidence that my own wife had been systematically dismantling everything Laura had left behind.

Daniel broke the silence.

"We need to contact Robert Ellison.""

"Today.""

"Yes. And I want copies of every document Denise sent to Richard.""

I nodded.

Daniel picked up his phone.

Before he could dial, mine rang.

Denise.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel shook his head.

"Don't answer unless we know what we're trying to establish.""

But I wanted answers.

I stepped into the hallway and answered.

"What?""

Her voice sounded different.

Quieter.

"Marcus, we need to talk.""

"About what?""

"Last night.""

"There's nothing to discuss.""

"Please. I made a mistake.""

I leaned against the wall.

"Which one?""

She sighed.

"All right. I shouldn't have charged Maya that much rent.""

"You shouldn't have charged her anything.""

"I know.""

"You stole money from her inheritance.""

"I was going to replace it.""

"You opened an account using my identity.""

"Marcus, listen—"

"You tried to transfer my house into a trust.""

"I was trying to protect our family!""

I almost laughed.

"From whom? Me?""

She was quiet.

Then she said, "I want to come home.""

I looked toward Daniel's office.

"Why?""

"Because we need to fix this.""

"Where is the money, Denise?""

"I don't have it.""

"Where is it?""

"Some of it went to bills.""

"And the rest?""

She hesitated.

"Richard was handling some investments.""

I straightened.

"What investments?""

"Just listen to me.""

"Did you give Richard Maya's money?""

"I was trying to grow it.""

"Without her permission?""

"She wouldn't understand.""

I closed my eyes.

"You're still blaming her.""

"I'm not blaming her!""

"Then stop pretending you were helping her.""

Her voice became sharper.

"Marcus, you have no idea what I've been dealing with.""

I waited.

For the first time, she sounded genuinely desperate.

"I've been carrying this family for years.""

I stared at the wall.

"You haven't paid the mortgage once.""

"I raised the children.""

"So did I.""

"You don't understand. Brandon needed money. Tasha needed college tuition. Everything kept falling on me.""

"And Maya needed her inheritance.""

Denise was silent.

Then she whispered, "The money wasn't supposed to be hers until she turned eighteen.""

I felt something cold move through my chest.

"It was hers the day Laura left it to her.""

"Marcus, please.""

"No. I want you to answer one question. Why did you think you had the right to take it?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she said, "You need to stop talking to Daniel.""

I froze.

"Why?""

"Because he's going to destroy everything.""

"Everything you've built?""

"Everything we have.""

I lowered my voice.

"Denise, what are you afraid Daniel will find?""

She hung up.

I remained in the hallway, staring at the screen.

Then a text arrived.

*You don't know what Laura was really doing with that property. Ask Robert about the original trust amendment.*

I showed Daniel.

He read it carefully.

"She's trying to redirect us.""

"Or warn us.""

"Either way, we need the original documents.""

He called Robert Ellison.

The receptionist transferred him after a brief explanation.

A man with a deep, measured voice answered.

"Robert Ellison.""

"Mr. Ellison, my name is Daniel Brooks. I'm representing Marcus Carter. We need to discuss the Laura Carter family trust.""

Silence.

Then the man said, "Is Marcus with you?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Put him on.""

I took the phone.

"Mr. Ellison?""

"Marcus. I'm sorry it's taken this long for us to speak.""

My stomach tightened.

"You knew about Laura's trust?""

"Yes.""

"She left a letter for me.""

"I was hoping you would find it.""

I stared at Daniel.

"What does that mean?""

Robert exhaled.

"Laura came to see me shortly before she passed. She was concerned about what would happen to Maya's inheritance if you remarried.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"She knew I might remarry.""

"Of course. She wanted you to be happy. But she also wanted to ensure that Maya's assets remained protected.""

"Did she mention Denise?""

"Not by name.""

"Then what was she worried about?""

Robert paused.

"She was worried about someone attempting to gain control over the property through a family trust.""

Daniel leaned toward the phone.

"Can you confirm who owns the Franklin County property?""

"Yes. The property is held under the original family trust. Maya is the sole designated beneficiary.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can Denise sell it?""

"No.""

"Can she transfer it?""

"No.""

"Then why is she listed as an authorized representative in the records we found?""

Robert's voice hardened.

"Because someone submitted an amendment eight months ago.""

Daniel sat up.

"Was it valid?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because the amendment required the consent of the original trustee and an independent witness. Neither signature was authentic.""

My heart started pounding.

"Are you saying someone forged the documents?""

"That's what our preliminary review suggests.""

Daniel asked for a copy.

Robert agreed to send it immediately.

Then he added something that made the room go cold.

"There's another matter, Marcus.""

"What?""

"Your wife came to my office twice.""

I gripped the phone.

"When?""

"First, approximately seven months ago. Then again three months later.""

"What did she want?""

"She wanted to know whether the trust could be amended to include her children.""

I looked at Daniel.

Robert continued.

"I explained that Maya was the sole beneficiary and that the trust could not be altered in the way she proposed.""

"What happened?""

"She became upset. She told me the arrangement was unfair because she had helped raise Maya.""

I closed my eyes.

Robert's next words were even worse.

"She also asked whether there was a way to remove you as Maya's financial guardian.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"Why?""

"She claimed you were emotionally unstable and financially irresponsible.""

Daniel immediately wrote something down.

I stared at the phone.

"Did you believe her?""

"No. I asked her to provide evidence. She couldn't.""

"Did she try again?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Three weeks?""

Robert continued.

"She came with another attorney. Richard Hale.""

The same man.

"She brought a document claiming you had voluntarily transferred your guardianship authority to her.""

I felt sick.

"I never did that.""

"I know. I refused to recognize it.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you retain a copy?""

"Yes. And I believe I have something else you should see.""

"What?""

Robert paused.

"Laura left a sealed envelope. She instructed me to give it to Marcus if anyone ever attempted to take control of Maya's inheritance.""

My throat tightened.

"What is in it?""

"I haven't opened it. Laura specifically asked that it remain sealed until the conditions were met.""

"Can you send it?""

"No. I need Marcus to collect it in person. There are identity verification procedures.""

Daniel agreed to arrange a meeting.

Before ending the call, Robert said something else.

"Marcus, there's one more thing. The envelope isn't the only item Laura left.""

"What else?""

"A recording.""

I went completely still.

"A recording?""

"Yes. She recorded a message shortly before her final hospitalization.""

My hands began to shake.

"Why?""

"She wanted Maya to hear it when she turned eighteen.""

I looked toward the dining room.

My daughter was sitting at the table, tracing the edge of her mother's letter with one finger.

"What did she say?""

Robert's voice softened.

"I don't know. But she was very specific about when it should be played.""

I swallowed.

"Can I hear it now?""

"No. Laura left clear instructions. Maya must be present, and she must have reached eighteen.""

I looked at the calendar on the wall.

Maya's eighteenth birthday was six weeks away.

Six weeks.

I had spent years believing that my first wife's final gift to our daughter was a savings account and a piece of property.

Now I was learning that Laura had left something else behind.

Something she had deliberately hidden.

And whatever it contained, she'd wanted Maya to hear it herself.

Daniel ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I think we need to secure every document and account before Denise realizes how much we know.""

I nodded.

But before either of us could move, my phone rang again.

This time, it was Brandon.

I answered.

"What's wrong?""

His voice was shaking.

"Mr. Carter, you need to come back home.""

"What happened?""

"Mom's here.""

"Is she alone?""

"No.""

I heard a door close in the background.

Then Brandon whispered:

"She's with Richard.""

My stomach tightened.

"What are they doing?""

Brandon took a breath.

"They're trying to get into Maya's bedroom.""

I stood up so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.

"Why?""

"I don't know. But Richard has a key.""

Then Brandon said something that made my blood run cold.

"Mr. Carter, I think they're looking for Laura's blue folder.""

May you like

And just before the call ended, I heard Denise's voice in the background.

"Find the original documents. We don't have much time.""
