Amused

Chapter 8: The Child I Never Knew I Had

The ambulance took Daniel to the hospital, but I refused to go with him.

He was conscious, and the paramedics assured me the wound was treatable. Before they loaded him into the ambulance, he caught my hand.

"Renee, listen to Claire.""

I looked at him.

"I've listened to lies for thirteen years.""

"I know.""

"Then give me one reason to trust her.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because she's the only person who came back.""

I didn't understand what he meant.

But he squeezed my hand and added, "Whatever happens, don't let Maya believe any of this is her fault.""

Then the ambulance doors closed.

I watched it pull away.

A police officer approached me.

"Mrs. Holloway, we need you to come with us.""

"To the old maternity building?""

"Yes. We've contacted state investigators, and additional officers are on their way. We won't let you enter alone.""

I looked at Claire.

She stood beside the police cruiser, holding the photograph of Maya and Dr. Voss.

"Before we go," I said, "you're going to tell me everything.""

Claire nodded.

We sat in the back of the cruiser while another officer drove ahead of us. Rain streaked the windows, turning the streetlights into long yellow smears.

Claire folded her hands in her lap.

"Thirteen years ago, I was working the overnight shift in the medical records department at St. Catherine's. I was twenty-four, recently divorced, and desperate to keep my job.""

"That doesn't explain why you helped alter the records.""

"I didn't know the records had been altered until after the babies were discharged.""

"Then what happened?""

Claire stared out the window.

"Dr. Voss came to me with a stack of documents. He said there had been a mistake in the nursery, and the hospital needed to correct the files before the families were notified.""

"Did you believe him?""

"At first. He was a senior physician. Everyone respected him. He said the babies had been identified incorrectly during an emergency transfer.""

She paused.

"Then I found the original nursery ledger.""

"The one with three names?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the seat.

"What did it show?""

"It showed that the third baby, Elena, had been transferred to a private facility under an identity that didn't belong to her. It also showed that Dr. Voss had personally approved the transfer.""

"Why didn't you report him?""

"I tried.""

Claire's voice trembled.

"I went to the hospital administrator. He told me the matter had already been reviewed and that I should stop asking questions. Two days later, my access to the records system was revoked.""

"And the signatures?""

"I never forged yours or Daniel's.""

"Then who did?""

Claire looked at me.

"Dr. Voss.""

I stared at her.

"Why would he put my name on a transfer authorization?""

"Because the child was registered as yours.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because the hospital needed a legal explanation for why three babies had been moved through the nursery under conflicting identities. Your name was used to create a paper trail that made Elena's transfer appear to be part of a private placement.""

"But I never agreed to adopt another child.""

"I know.""

"Did Daniel?""

Claire hesitated.

"Not knowingly.""

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?""

"Dr. Voss told Daniel that a third infant had been placed under his care for emergency observation. He asked Daniel to sign a statement confirming that the child had been seen in the nursery. Daniel believed he was signing a medical acknowledgment.""

"You're saying he didn't know what the document meant?""

"That's what he told me.""

I closed my eyes.

For years, I'd believed Daniel's greatest betrayal was leaving our marriage.

Now I wondered how many decisions he'd made while convincing himself that silence could protect us.

"And the money?"" I asked.

"Who sent the forty-eight thousand dollars?""

"Dr. Voss used a hospital foundation account. The payment was made to a company that no longer exists.""

"Mercer Family Services.""

Claire nodded.

"The company was registered by a man who had worked with Dr. Voss. Its purpose was to make the transfer appear legitimate.""

"What about Mark?""

"He was hired to recover the original files after Abigail began investigating the switched babies.""

I thought of the photograph of Maya and Lily outside the clinic.

"Why was Maya involved?""

"Because Abigail left her the evidence.""

"Why not me?""

"Abigail believed Maya was the only person who could bring the truth into the open without immediately being dismissed as someone trying to recover a child.""

I stared at her.

"She's thirteen.""

"I know.""

"She shouldn't have been responsible for any of this.""

Claire's eyes filled.

"You're right.""

The cruiser turned onto a narrow road bordered by trees. At the end stood a long brick building with boarded windows and a collapsed section of roof.

A faded sign hung above the entrance.

*ST. CATHERINE'S MATERNITY ANNEX.*

The original hospital had been demolished years earlier, but the maternity wing remained, sealed behind construction fencing.

Several police vehicles were parked nearby.

An officer opened my door.

"Stay behind us, Mrs. Holloway.""

I stepped into the rain.

The building looked like a place the world had forgotten. Weeds grew through the cracked pavement. A rusted wheelchair lay on its side near the entrance.

Claire led us to a side door hidden behind a row of overgrown shrubs.

She pulled a small key from her pocket.

"How do you have that?"" I asked.

"I kept it after the building was closed.""

"Why?""

"Because I knew someone would eventually come looking for the records.""

She unlocked the door.

Inside, the air smelled of damp plaster and old disinfectant. Flashlights swept across empty hallways lined with peeling paint.

We passed a room where rusted hospital beds stood beneath plastic sheets.

Then we reached a staircase leading underground.

A sound drifted up from below.

A child crying.

I ran.

The officer caught my arm.

"Mrs. Holloway, wait!""

"That's my daughter!""

I pulled free and descended the stairs.

At the bottom was a narrow corridor with several metal doors. A single light burned at the far end.

I heard a man's voice.

"Your mother will come. She has no choice.""

Then Maya answered.

"You don't know my mother.""

I nearly collapsed.

I rushed toward the room.

The door stood open.

Maya sat on a metal chair beside a table covered with files. Her hands were free, but a strip of adhesive tape had been wrapped around one wrist. Her face was pale, and a bruise darkened her cheek.

Dr. Samuel Voss stood beside her.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair, a neat suit, and the calm expression of a man accustomed to being obeyed.

He turned when I entered.

"Renee.""

I stopped.

"Let her go.""

He smiled faintly.

"You have your mother's eyes.""

The words struck me like a blow.

"What?""

He looked at Maya.

"She told me you were coming.""

I stepped toward my daughter.

"Are you hurt, sweetheart?""

Maya shook her head, tears spilling down her face.

"I'm sorry, Mom.""

I rushed to her and wrapped my arms around her.

She clung to me, trembling.

"I'm sorry," she whispered again.

"I didn't want you to find out like this.""

I held her tighter.

"You have nothing to apologize for.""

Dr. Voss cleared his throat.

"An emotional reunion is understandable, but we have matters to discuss.""

I turned toward him.

"You kidnapped my daughter.""

"I brought her here because she possesses information that belongs to me.""

"She's thirteen.""

"Age has nothing to do with the truth.""

"It has everything to do with how you've treated her.""

His expression hardened.

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

I stepped between him and Maya.

"You don't get to tell me what is necessary.""

For the first time, his composure slipped.

"You have no idea what your family has done.""

"My family?""

"Your daughter stole documents from my archive. She distributed confidential medical records. She threatened to expose people who have spent thirteen years protecting her.""

Maya rose shakily.

"I didn't steal anything. The files belonged to the families you lied to.""

Voss turned on her.

"You were told to leave them alone.""

"You told me my mother was dead.""

The room fell silent.

I looked at Maya.

"What?""

She wiped her face.

"He showed me a photograph of a woman and said she was my biological mother. He told me she'd died before I was born.""

Voss's jaw tightened.

"I told you what you needed to hear.""

"You told me she was a stranger who didn't want me.""

Maya's voice shook.

"You said my parents gave me away.""

I turned toward the doctor.

"How dare you?""

He ignored me.

"Maya, your biological mother is gone. Nothing you do can change that.""

"You're lying!""

Her shout echoed through the room.

Voss took a step toward her.

The officers entered behind me.

"Dr. Voss," one said, "step away from the child.""

Voss glanced at the doorway.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

"You don't understand what you're interrupting.""

"We understand that you're detaining a minor against her will.""

He raised both hands.

"I have documentation.""

"Then you can show it to investigators.""

An officer moved toward Maya while another secured Voss's wrists.

I knelt beside my daughter.

"Can you stand?""

She nodded.

I helped her up.

As we turned toward the corridor, Voss spoke again.

"Renee, you deserve to know the truth about the third child.""

I stopped.

Maya gripped my hand.

"Don't listen to him, Mom.""

Voss smiled sadly.

"She already knows part of it.""

He looked directly at me.

"Your daughter isn't biologically related to you because she was never meant to be yours. But the child you were supposed to receive that night was not Elena.""

My throat tightened.

"Then who was it?""

He leaned forward.

"Your biological daughter was the third baby.""

I stared at him.

"That's impossible.""

"Is it? Look at the DNA report.""

He nodded toward a file on the table.

An officer retrieved it.

The document showed a genetic comparison between me and Elena Voss.

The result was unmistakable.

A biological mother-child relationship.

I looked at the doctor.

"Elena is my daughter?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

Maya stared at the report.

Then she whispered, "But if Elena is your daughter, who am I?""

Voss's expression softened into something almost pitying.

"You're the child Abigail Mercer gave birth to.""

Maya went perfectly still.

I reached for her hand.

"You're my daughter," I said immediately.

"Nothing changes that.""

She looked at me, tears shining in her eyes.

"I know, Mom.""

Then she turned toward Voss.

"But if Elena is her daughter, why did you hide her?""

For the first time, the doctor didn't answer.

Claire appeared in the doorway behind the officers.

She was holding a thin folder.

"I can answer that," she said.

Voss's face drained of color.

May you like

Claire opened the folder and removed a single page.

"Because Elena wasn't supposed to survive.""
