Chapter 7: The Signature That Destroyed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't look away from the signature.
My name was written at the bottom of the transfer authorization in blue ink. The R in Renee curled beneath the line exactly as I had written it on thousands of documents. The H in Holloway leaned slightly to the left.
It looked like my handwriting.
But I had never seen that document before.
"I didn't sign this," I whispered.
Mark Bennett placed both hands on the desk.
"That's what everyone says when the truth finally catches up with them.""
Daniel grabbed the paper.
"This is a forgery.""
Mark didn't even look at him.
"Is it? Then explain why your signature is there, too.""
"Someone copied it!""
"Someone copied both of yours?"" Mark tilted his head.
"That's a remarkable coincidence.""
I forced myself to examine the document instead of the man holding it.
The authorization was dated thirteen years earlier, three days after Maya's birth. It approved the transfer of an infant identified as Elena Voss to a private residential facility. Beneath the signatures was a paragraph acknowledging that the receiving family had been informed of the child's medical history and had consented to a permanent change of identity.
My name appeared beside the words biological parent.
My stomach twisted.
"Where did you get this?""
"From the original file.""
"Then why didn't you give it to the police?""
Mark laughed.
"Because the police would ask questions neither you nor Daniel could answer.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"You're holding my daughter. You think that makes you untouchable?""
Mark turned toward him.
"No. I think the fact that you signed the original agreement makes you vulnerable.""
"I never signed it!""
"Then prove it.""
Daniel lunged.
Mark moved faster than I expected. He shoved Daniel against the shelves, sending several boxes crashing to the floor.
"Stop!"" I screamed.
Daniel swung at him, catching his cheek.
Mark stumbled, then drove his shoulder into Daniel's chest. They struck the desk together, and the laptop slid dangerously close to the edge.
I grabbed it before it fell.
"Enough!"" I shouted.
Neither man listened.
Mark struck Daniel across the mouth. Daniel staggered backward, knocking over a metal chair.
Then Mark pulled something from his coat.
A small black pistol.
The room went silent.
"Nobody moves," he said.
Daniel froze with one hand pressed to his bleeding lip.
I held the laptop against my chest.
Mark's breathing was heavy, but his gun hand remained steady.
"You two have spent thirteen years pretending you were innocent," he said.
"I'm tired of it.""
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
"What happened thirteen years ago?""
His jaw tightened.
"Your daughter was supposed to go to a different family.""
"Which daughter?""
He didn't answer.
"Elena?"" I pressed.
"Was she supposed to go to us?""
Mark's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"You're getting warmer.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't listen to him, Renee. He's trying to confuse us.""
Mark pointed the gun toward Daniel.
"Your husband was paid to cooperate with the transfer. He accepted the money, then changed his mind when he realized the hospital could be investigated.""
"That's a lie," Daniel said.
"Is it? Ask him why he left you on March fourteenth.""
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
My heart sank.
"Daniel?""
"I didn't know what the money was for.""
"What money?""
He swallowed.
"Dr. Voss said it was compensation for legal expenses.""
"Forty-eight thousand dollars?""
Daniel's face crumpled.
"I never received it.""
Mark smiled.
"Of course you didn't. The transfer went through an account connected to your employer. Someone used your name to make it look as though you'd accepted payment.""
"Then why are you blaming me?""
"Because you signed the statement that made the transfer possible.""
"I told you, I never signed anything!""
Mark suddenly struck the desk with the barrel of the gun.
"Enough!""
I flinched.
He turned toward me.
"Renee, you have a choice. Give me the flash drive, and I'll tell you where Maya is. Keep it, and I'll let Dr. Voss decide what happens to her.""
I looked at the laptop.
Three files remained open on the screen.
Maya Holloway.
Lillian Mercer.
Elena Voss.
The truth was sitting in front of me, but every answer seemed to create another question.
I thought of Maya beneath her bed, listening to a stranger walk into her room. I thought of the terror in her voice when she'd called me.
They told me you would get hurt if I told you.
I wasn't going to let them frighten her into silence again.
"How do I know you'll keep your promise?"" I asked.
Mark lowered the gun slightly.
"You don't.""
"Then I need proof that Maya is alive.""
He took out his phone and opened a video.
Maya appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in a white room with a narrow window near the ceiling. Her hair was tangled, and her eyes were red from crying.
"Mom?""
I stepped forward.
"Maya, sweetheart, are you hurt?""
"No.""
"Where are you?""
She glanced off-camera.
A man's voice spoke.
"Tell her what you told me.""
Maya's face went pale.
She looked back at the phone.
"Mom, don't give them the drive.""
Mark ended the video.
I stared at him.
"You said she was alive. You didn't say she was safe.""
"Safety is a matter of perspective.""
I wanted to slap him.
Instead, I placed the laptop on the desk.
"Let me see the third file.""
Mark frowned.
"What?""
"The complete file. Not the documents you've chosen to show us. Everything.""
He studied me.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a second flash drive.
He connected it to the laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were scanned medical reports, transfer records, and a series of photographs taken at St. Catherine's Medical Center on the night the three babies were born.
One photograph showed a young nurse standing beside three bassinets.
Another showed Dr. Samuel Voss holding a clipboard.
The final photograph made me gasp.
A younger version of myself stood beside a hospital bed, holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
I remembered that moment.
The room had been dim. I was exhausted, barely able to keep my eyes open. Daniel had been standing beside me, crying quietly as I kissed the baby's forehead.
The photograph had been taken minutes after midnight.
On the back, someone had written:
Infant B — released to Renee Holloway.
I stared at it.
"That's me.""
Mark nodded.
"Yes.""
"That's my baby.""
"That's the child you were given.""
The words cut through me.
I looked at Daniel.
He was crying now.
"Renee, I need you to understand something.""
I shook my head.
"Don't.""
"I tried to find out what happened.""
"You had thirteen years.""
"I was afraid.""
"So was I!""
My voice echoed through the storage room.
"I was afraid when our daughter disappeared. I was afraid when that man walked into her bedroom. I was afraid when I found out there might have been a mistake at the hospital. But I didn't stop looking for her.""
Daniel lowered his head.
I turned back to Mark.
"Who is Maya's biological mother?""
He hesitated.
Then he said, "Abigail Mercer.""
My breath caught.
"Lily's mother?""
"Yes.""
"And Lily?""
"Your biological daughter.""
The room seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
"No.""
Mark continued.
"The two babies were switched after birth. Lily went home with the Mercers. Maya went home with you and Daniel.""
I stared at him.
"If that's true, then why is Elena involved?""
Mark looked toward the laptop.
"Because Elena was never supposed to leave the hospital.""
I felt Daniel stiffen beside me.
Mark continued.
"Dr. Voss's wife had given birth to a stillborn child earlier that evening. He couldn't accept it.
He had access to the nursery records, and he knew a private family had been approved for an emergency adoption. He arranged for Elena to be transferred under a different identity.""
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he wanted a child.""
I stared at the three files.
"So he stole her?""
"He falsified the records. The hospital concealed it. And everyone who signed the paperwork became part of the lie.""
"But I never signed anything.""
Mark looked at me.
"Then someone forged your signature.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel suddenly lifted his head.
"Claire.""
Mark's expression hardened.
"Be careful.""
"Claire was the records clerk. She had access to the original documents.""
"She was twenty-four," Mark said.
"She didn't make decisions about infant transfers.""
"But she could have copied our signatures.""
Mark's jaw tightened.
I looked from one man to the other.
"What aren't you telling me?""
Daniel took a shaky breath.
"Claire was the person who contacted me three months ago. She said she had proof that someone had altered the records. She wanted me to help her recover the original files.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she said Maya was in danger.""
"And you believed her?""
"I believed someone was trying to hurt our daughter.""
Mark laughed bitterly.
"Claire is very good at making people believe what she wants them to believe.""
He reached toward the laptop.
I moved it away.
"No.""
His eyes narrowed.
"Give me the drive.""
"Not until you tell me where Maya is.""
Mark raised the gun again.
I felt Daniel move beside me.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"Put the weapon down, Mark.""
We all turned.
Claire Bennett stood in the doorway.
Her gray coat was wet from the rain. Her hands were raised, and behind her stood two uniformed police officers.
Mark's face went white.
"You shouldn't be here," he whispered.
Claire looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Renee.""
Then she turned toward Mark.
"You've had thirteen years to tell the truth. It's over.""
Mark raised the gun.
One officer shouted a warning.
Everything happened at once.
Daniel threw himself toward Mark. The gun fired, the sound deafening in the small room.
A shelf shattered.
I ducked, clutching the laptop.
The officers rushed forward and tackled Mark to the floor.
Within seconds, his wrists were secured behind his back.
Daniel lay beside the desk, holding his shoulder.
Blood seeped between his fingers.
"Daniel!""
I dropped beside him.
"I'm okay," he gasped.
"I'm okay.""
But I could see the pain in his face.
Claire knelt beside us.
"The ambulance is coming.""
I looked up at her.
"Where is Maya?""
Claire's expression crumpled.
"Dr. Voss has her.""
"Where?""
"At the old St. Catherine's maternity building.""
I stared at her.
"The hospital was demolished.""
"Not all of it. The original nursery wing is still standing. Dr. Voss has been using the basement as a private records archive.""
I rose slowly.
"Then take me there.""
Claire shook her head.
"You can't go alone.""
"I'm not going alone. The police are here.""
One officer approached, speaking into his radio. Another was checking the laptop and the documents.
Claire reached into her coat and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Maya standing beside a tall, silver-haired man.
Dr. Samuel Voss.
On the back, in red ink, were the words:
Bring the mother who signed the agreement.
I stared at the photograph.
"I never signed anything.""
Claire looked directly at me.
"I know.""
"Then why does he want me?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because the person who forged your signature didn't do it to steal Elena.""
May you like
She paused.
"She did it to hide the fact that the third baby was yours.""
