Chapter 4: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the handwritten signature until the letters began to blur.

Vanessa Carter.

My stepmother's name.

Written beneath a warning my mother had left behind.

For ten years, Vanessa had told me that my mother died peacefully in a terrible accident. She had told me my father was gone. She had told me that the only reason I had a roof over my head was because she had chosen to raise me.

And now I was looking at evidence that my mother had feared her.

"Explain this," I said.

Daniel pulled out the chair opposite me.

"Sit down, sweetheart.""

"Don't tell me to sit down. Tell me why Vanessa's name is on my mother's letter.""

He took a long breath.

"Your mother wrote this after she discovered that Vanessa had been stealing from the company. But she didn't know how much Vanessa had taken, or who else was involved.""

"So she confronted her?""

"Yes. They argued in the workshop. Your mother threatened to contact the police.""

I looked at the document again.

"What happened afterward?""

"Vanessa came to me that evening. She was crying. She told me your mother had become unstable and was threatening to take you away from me.""

I frowned.

"Why would she say that?""

"Because she knew your mother had started making arrangements to protect you. She wanted me to believe your mother was planning to leave.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"At the time, I was already receiving threats. Someone had been following me. I was afraid they might come after you.""

"So you signed the guardianship agreement?""

He nodded.

"Vanessa told me it was temporary. She said it would allow her to take you somewhere safe while I dealt with the situation.""

I stared at him.

"You gave her control over me.""

His face crumpled.

"Yes.""

"You let her decide where I lived.""

"Yes.""

"You let her tell me you were dead.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know she would do that.""

I pushed the chair away.

"That's convenient.""

"Nia—"

"No. You don't get to appear after ten years and tell me you were protecting me. You weren't there when I cried myself to sleep.

You weren't there when Vanessa locked my sewing machine in the garage because she said I was wasting electricity. You weren't there when Brianna wore my designs and everyone congratulated her.""

My voice broke.

"You weren't there when I needed a father.""

Daniel didn't defend himself.

He simply sat there, absorbing every word.

Finally, he said, "You're right.""

I looked away.

"I don't know what you expect me to do with this.""

"Nothing. Not tonight.""

He pushed the document toward me.

"But I need you to understand one thing. I never willingly gave up my parental rights.""

I looked at the signature.

It was unmistakably his.

"Then why does this say you surrendered them?""

"Because the document was altered.""

He pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"Look at the date.""

I leaned closer.

The agreement was dated three days after the accident that supposedly killed him.

But the signature was dated two weeks before.

I frowned.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It doesn't.""

Daniel pulled another paper from his folder.

"This is the original agreement my lawyer prepared. It granted Vanessa temporary guardianship while I was recovering. It did not surrender my rights.""

I compared the two documents.

The wording was different.

The signatures were similar, but the second document contained an additional page.

"Who changed it?""

"I suspect Vanessa's attorney. But I need the original records to prove it.""

I looked at the brass key my mother had hidden in my dress.

"The blue ledger.""

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly.""

A knock interrupted us.

The security guard opened the door.

"Mr. Carter, the police have finished reviewing the hallway footage. They'd like to speak with Miss Carter.""

I stood.

"About Brianna?""

"Yes. They also want to document the damage to your gown.""

Daniel looked at me.

"I'll come with you.""

I hesitated.

Then I shook my head.

"I can speak for myself.""

He nodded.

"Of course.""

We walked into the corridor together.

The auditorium was nearly empty now. The golden spotlights had been switched off, and workers were dismantling the runway.

A few competitors remained near the entrance.

When they saw me, one of them hurried over.

"Nia!""

It was Olivia Bennett, a contestant from London who had complimented my design earlier.

She looked at my ruined dress.

"Oh, my God. What happened?""

"Brianna destroyed it.""

Olivia's expression hardened.

"I saw her arguing with you before the security guards arrived.""

"You did?""

She nodded.

"And I recorded part of it.""

My heart jumped.

"You recorded it?""

"I was taking a video of the backstage preparations. Your stepsister walked into the frame. I caught her grabbing the trophy.""

She pulled out her phone.

"Look.""

The recording showed Brianna approaching me.

It captured her shouting, grabbing the trophy, and throwing it onto the marble floor.

Then it showed her tearing the wings from my dress.

The audio was clear.

"You don't deserve this!""

I watched the footage twice.

Olivia lowered her phone.

"I already sent a copy to the competition director.""

I looked at her.

"Thank you.""

She squeezed my hand.

"You earned that trophy. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.""

For the first time that evening, I felt someone was standing beside me without expecting anything in return.

A police officer approached.

"Miss Carter?""

I nodded.

"I'm Officer Lewis. We need to ask you a few questions.""

I explained what had happened.

I showed him the photographs of the damaged gown, the broken trophy, and the video Olivia had recorded.

Officer Lewis listened carefully.

"Did your stepsister have permission to handle the trophy?""

"No.""

"Did you give her permission to damage your dress?""

"Absolutely not.""

He wrote something in his notebook.

"All right. We'll document the evidence and contact the competition organizers regarding the property's value.""

Vanessa and Brianna were waiting near the main entrance.

Two officers stood beside them.

Brianna's mascara had run down her cheeks.

When she saw me, she stepped forward.

"Nia, please.""

I stopped.

"What?""

She glanced at the officers.

"I didn't mean to break everything.""

"You threw my trophy.""

"I was angry.""

"You tore apart thirteen nights of work.""

"I said I was sorry!""

I looked at her.

"No, you haven't.""

She opened her mouth.

Then Vanessa stepped between us.

"That's enough, Brianna. You don't owe her anything.""

I stared at my stepmother.

"You owe me ten years of truth.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then explain why my mother's name is on a letter warning me about you.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

She turned toward Daniel.

"You showed her that?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"She found it herself.""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"That letter was never supposed to leave the workshop.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"How do you know about the letter?""

She didn't answer.

Officer Lewis noticed her reaction.

"Mrs. Carter, what letter is she referring to?""

"Nothing. This is family nonsense.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Ten years of family nonsense.""

Vanessa glared at him.

"You should have stayed away.""

The words escaped before she could stop them.

The officer looked up.

"Why?""

Vanessa froze.

Daniel took a step toward her.

"Tell them, Vanessa.""

She looked at Brianna.

Then at me.

And finally, she said something that made my stomach turn.

"Because if you hadn't disappeared, your daughter would have learned the truth about her mother years ago.""

I stepped forward.

"What truth?""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Ask your father why your mother wanted to divorce him.""

Daniel went completely still.

I turned toward him.

"Is that true?""

He looked at me, but didn't answer.

Vanessa smiled.

"Go ahead, Daniel. Tell her what you did.""

Then she allowed the officers to escort her toward the exit.

Brianna followed, crying silently.

I watched them disappear through the glass doors.

Then I turned back to my father.

"Did Mom want to leave you?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The word landed harder than I expected.

"Why?""

He looked toward the darkened auditorium.

"Because she discovered something about me that I had hidden from her.""

"What?""

He took my hand.

"Nia, before your mother died, I made a decision that changed our entire family.""

May you like

He paused.

"And Vanessa wasn't the only person who knew about it.""
