Amused

Chapter 3: What My Mother Left Behind

The room suddenly felt too small.

I looked down at my ruined gown.

The torn crimson feathers lay in a heap beside the chair. Crystals glittered across the carpet. One of the support frames had snapped completely in half.

"What could my mother have hidden in my dress?"" I asked.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned toward the security guard.

"Can you get us a copy of the original recording?""

"Already requested, sir.""

"And nobody touches that garment until the police arrive.""

The guard nodded.

I looked between them.

"Why would anyone hide something in a dress?""

Daniel rubbed his jaw.

"Your mother used to hide important documents inside the linings of her designs. She believed people rarely inspected the inside of a garment.""

I stared at him.

I remembered the countless times I had opened old boxes of fabric and found handwritten notes between folded patterns.

My mother had loved secret pockets.

She used to tell me that a good designer knew where to hide the things that mattered.

"Which dress?"" I asked.

Daniel pointed toward my gown.

"That one.""

I looked at the torn fabric.

"I made this myself.""

"Did you use any of your mother's old materials?""

I hesitated.

"Some.""

I walked toward the garment rack.

The remaining section of the skirt was draped over a chair. I carefully lifted it, searching the seams.

There were several layers of fabric beneath the embroidered flowers.

I had constructed the dress using a combination of new silk and old crimson material from a box Vanessa had once given me.

She had told me it was worthless fabric left behind by my mother.

I had almost thrown it away.

Instead, I had used it to reinforce the inner lining.

My hands began shaking.

"Daniel?""

He moved closer.

"What is it?""

I pointed to the inner seam.

"This fabric.""

He leaned down.

"Where did you get it?""

"Vanessa gave it to me years ago.""

His face changed.

"She gave you this?""

"She said it was from Mom's old workshop.""

Daniel stared at the material.

Then he closed his eyes.

"Oh, my God.""

"What?""

He gently touched the fabric.

"This was part of your mother's final collection.""

I looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because I helped her choose it.""

He stepped backward.

"She used this particular silk for a collection she called the Crimson Promise.""

I looked at the torn wings.

My dress had been inspired by the collection.

I had found the old sketches in a box and tried to create something worthy of them.

"I didn't know," I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother had a reason for choosing this fabric.""

He took a small pair of scissors from the worktable.

"May I?""

I nodded.

He carefully opened a section of the lining near the waist.

For a moment, there was nothing.

Just fabric.

Then his fingers stopped.

"There's something here.""

He gently pulled out a narrow, sealed envelope.

My breath caught.

The envelope was yellowed with age.

Across the front, in familiar handwriting, were two words.

For Nia.

I covered my mouth.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

"She must have hidden this before the accident.""

I reached for it.

My fingers trembled as I opened the flap.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper and a small brass key.

I unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably my mother's.

My darling Nia,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I prayed would never happen. I wanted to tell you everything myself, but your father and I agreed that some truths would have to wait until you were old enough to understand them.

I stopped.

The words blurred.

Daniel moved closer.

"Take your time.""

I continued.

Never believe that you were unwanted. Never believe that your father abandoned you. And never let anyone convince you that the work of your hands belongs to somebody else.

I began crying again.

There was more.

There are people who will smile while they take everything from you. They will call it love. They will tell you they are protecting you. But love does not require you to disappear.

My chest tightened.

The letter continued.

The key enclosed with this letter opens the small cabinet beneath the old cutting table in my private workshop. Inside, you will find something that belongs to you.

Trust your father.

And whatever happens, do not let Vanessa have the blue ledger.

I looked up.

"Blue ledger?""

Daniel had gone pale.

He took the letter carefully.

"Your mother found it.""

"Found what?""

"The original accounting records.""

He looked at the brass key in my palm.

"The blue ledger contained evidence of every fraudulent transaction made through her company.""

"Why would she hide it?""

"Because she was afraid someone would destroy it.""

I looked down at the final line.

I love you more than all the stars in the sky.

My mother used to say that to me every night.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For ten years, I had believed she had left me.

Now I was holding proof that she had been thinking about me until the very end.

Daniel gently placed his hand on my shoulder.

"She never stopped loving you.""

I nodded.

Then a loud voice came from the corridor.

"Where is she?""

Vanessa.

The door opened before anyone could answer.

She entered with Brianna behind her.

Two security officers followed.

Vanessa's eyes immediately found Daniel.

For one long second, she looked as though she had seen a ghost.

Then she recovered.

"Daniel.""

My father stood.

"Vanessa.""

Brianna looked from him to me.

"Who is that?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

She stared at the letter in my hand.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

She knew exactly what it was.

"Give me that," she said.

I instinctively stepped backward.

Daniel moved between us.

"Don't come any closer.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"What is this ridiculous performance?""

"You know what it is," Daniel replied.

She looked at him.

"I don't know what you've told her, but you have no right to come here and interfere with my family.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Your family?""

He gestured toward me.

"You told my daughter I was dead.""

Vanessa raised her chin.

"You were dead to us.""

"That's not what you told the authorities.""

"Don't pretend you know what happened.""

"I know enough.""

Brianna stepped forward.

"Mom, what's going on?""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Stay out of this.""

"But you said he—"

"Be quiet!""

Brianna flinched.

I stared at Vanessa.

For the first time, I saw fear underneath her expensive makeup and carefully arranged smile.

I lifted the letter.

"Why did you hide this from me?""

Vanessa's eyes moved to the brass key.

"Where did you get that?""

"From my dress.""

She took a step forward.

Daniel blocked her.

"Answer her question.""

Vanessa looked at him with open hatred.

"Your wife was a paranoid woman.""

"My wife?""

"She hid things everywhere. She imagined people were stealing from her. She was becoming impossible.""

"She trusted you.""

Vanessa laughed.

"That was her mistake.""

The words fell into the room like a stone.

I stared at her.

"Did you steal from my mother?""

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, I thought she might deny it.

Instead, she said, "You have no idea what your mother put everyone through.""

Daniel's voice was cold.

"She built that company from nothing.""

"And I helped her!""

"You stole from her.""

"I kept it running!""

"You transferred money into your private accounts.""

Vanessa's face flushed.

"She was going to destroy everything!""

"She was going to report you.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

Brianna looked confused.

"Mom, what is he talking about?""

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"We're leaving.""

But Brianna didn't move.

"Mom?""

Vanessa shook her.

"I said we're leaving!""

A police officer entered the room.

"Mrs. Carter?""

Vanessa turned.

"Finally. Please explain to these people that this is a family matter.""

The officer glanced at the ruined dress.

"Ma'am, we've received a complaint regarding intentional destruction of property. We also have security footage showing the incident.""

Brianna's face went white.

"That was an accident!""

The officer opened a small notebook.

"Did you throw the trophy?""

Brianna looked at Vanessa.

"I was angry.""

"Did you tear the gown?""

"I was trying to...""

She stopped.

The officer waited.

Brianna lowered her eyes.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"My daughter is being harassed. Nia has been provoking her for years.""

I looked at her.

"Provoking her by winning a competition?""

Vanessa glared.

"Don't.""

The second officer approached.

"Mrs. Carter, we'd like you and your daughter to accompany us outside while we take statements.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You cannot do this.""

"We're not asking you to decide whether we're allowed to investigate.""

Brianna started crying.

"Mom, tell them!""

Vanessa pulled her close.

"Don't say anything.""

Then she looked directly at me.

"You think you've won something tonight?""

I held the letter tighter.

"I think I've finally found out who I am.""

Her smile returned, but it was different now.

Cold.

Almost triumphant.

"Then perhaps you should ask your father why he didn't come back when you were ten.""

Daniel went still.

I turned toward him.

"What does she mean?""

Vanessa looked between us.

"Tell her, Daniel.""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Tell her what happened after the hospital. Tell her why you signed those papers.""

My father looked down.

My stomach twisted.

"What papers?""

Vanessa moved toward the door with the officers.

But before she left, she turned one last time.

"Your father wasn't the only person who decided you were better off without him.""

The door closed behind her.

Silence filled the room.

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

"Is it true?""

He looked exhausted.

"Nia, there's something I need to explain.""

"You signed papers?""

He nodded.

"What papers?""

He reached into his folder and removed a document.

The paper was old, creased, and stamped with an official seal.

I read the heading.

*TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AND PARENTAL RIGHTS AGREEMENT.*

My name appeared near the bottom.

So did Daniel's signature.

And beneath it was another name.

Vanessa Carter.

I looked at my father.

"Why did you sign this?""

He took a shaky breath.

"Because I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.""

My blood turned cold.

"What?""

He looked toward the door.

Then he spoke so quietly I almost didn't hear him.

"Someone had threatened to take you away from me forever, Nia. And Vanessa told me she knew who was behind it.""

He placed another document on the table.

This one contained a handwritten note.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

It was my mother's.

And the first sentence made my heart stop.

Daniel, if anything happens to me, do not let them take our daughter.

My father stared at me.

"Your mother knew the danger before either of us understood how far it went.""

Then he pointed to the signature at the bottom of the note.

It wasn't my mother's.

May you like

It was the name of the person she feared most.

*Vanessa Carter.*
