Amused

Chapter 5: The Warning My Mother Left Behind

I stared at the handwriting.

Three words.

That was all.

*Protect Nia from her.*

My mother’s handwriting.

My mother’s warning.

My mother’s fear.

For years, I had wondered what my mother would say if she were still alive.

Would she tell me I was brave?

Would she tell me she was proud?

Would she tell me she loved me?

I never imagined the first message I would find from her would be a warning.

Dad held the paper like it was fragile.

Like one wrong movement could destroy it.

“Where did you get this?”” he asked Daniel.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She kept everything.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No, Vanessa. You just hoped nobody would ever find it.””

Dad looked between them.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“You deserve it.””

He opened the folder and pulled out another document.

“This was written by Elena.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She wrote down everything she discovered after she started questioning Vanessa’s story.””

Dad took the paper.

His eyes scanned the page.

“What did Elena discover?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at Dad.

“That Vanessa didn’t enter your life by accident.””

My stomach tightened.

Dad’s voice became cold.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“She knew about you before she met you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Dad.

His face had gone completely still.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She knew your name. She knew where you worked. She knew you had a daughter.””

Dad shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Daniel pointed at the photograph.

“The picture was taken three months before she moved into your neighborhood.””

Dad looked down.

The photograph was still on the table.

Vanessa standing across the street from our old house.

Watching.

Waiting.

I felt sick.

“You were watching us?””

I didn’t mean to say it.

The words escaped.

Everyone looked at me.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Nia—”

“No.””

My voice surprised me.

I stepped closer.

“You were watching my family?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

That was enough.

Dad turned toward her.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t plan everything.””

Dad stared.

“But you planned something.””

She didn’t respond.

Daniel picked up the folder.

“There’s more.””

Dad looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel pulled out a small envelope.

“This was supposed to be given to Nia when she turned eighteen.””

My heart stopped.

“From my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“I promised Elena I would keep it safe.””

Dad reached for it.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

“Nia?””

I didn’t know what to say.

Part of me wanted to grab it.

Part of me was terrified.

Because every secret we uncovered hurt more than the last.

Finally, I nodded.

Dad handed it to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

The ink was faded.

But the first words were clear.

*My sweet Nia,*

I covered my mouth.

My mother’s voice.

Not a memory.

Not a photograph.

Words.

From her.

I sat down.

Dad sat beside me.

I started reading.

If you are reading this, it means I couldn’t tell you everything myself.

My eyes filled immediately.

I need you to know one thing before anything else.

You were never the reason for my sadness.

I stopped.

The tears came faster.

Because some part of me had carried that fear since I was little.

Maybe I had been too much.

Maybe losing my mother was somehow my fault.

Maybe if I had been easier, better, different…

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

I kept reading.

You are the best thing that ever happened to me.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I was seven years old again.

Sitting in my mother’s lap.

Listening to her laugh.

Then I reached the next part.

But I need you to understand something about Vanessa.

My fingers tightened.

She is not who she says she is.

I looked up.

Vanessa was standing across the room.

Watching me.

I tried to help her.

I believed people could change.

I was wrong.

My heartbeat increased.

Vanessa was in trouble before she met Marcus. She was being chased by people from her past. When she realized I knew, she became afraid.

I looked at Dad.

He was listening.

If anything happens to me, I need Marcus to know the truth.

The room felt smaller.

Vanessa didn’t cause the accident herself.

I froze.

My eyes moved over the sentence again.

Again.

Again.

Not herself.

Not herself.

Dad noticed.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

My voice barely worked.

“She said Vanessa didn’t cause the accident herself.””

Dad went still.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Vanessa whispered:

“She knew.””

Dad looked at her.

“Knew what?””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“That I was there.””

Nobody spoke.

The words felt unreal.

Dad stood.

“You were there when my wife died?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Where were you?””

“I was trying to help.””

Dad’s voice rose.

“Where were you?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I followed Elena.””

“Why?””

“Because she was going to expose me.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa seemed surprised she admitted it.

Dad stepped back.

“Expose what?””

She wiped her face.

“My past.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“And the money.””

Dad looked at him.

“What money?””

Daniel opened another document.

“Vanessa had debts.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Stop.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You don’t get to hide anymore.””

Dad took the document.

I watched his face change as he read.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered.

“Records showing Vanessa used Elena’s name to borrow money.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Did you?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You used your sister?””

“I was desperate.””

“So you lied?””

“I was trying to survive!””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“And Nia?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

“You keep saying you were trying to survive.””

He pointed toward me.

“What do you think she was doing?””

Vanessa looked away.

For once, she had nothing to say.

I looked back at my mother’s letter.

There was one more paragraph.

One final warning.

My hands started shaking.

Because the last thing my mother wrote wasn’t about Vanessa.

It was about me.

Marcus, if you are reading this, please understand something.

Vanessa may try to convince you that Nia is confused.

She may tell you Nia is sensitive.

She may tell you Nia misunderstands.

Don’t believe her.

Because Nia was the one person who saw what happened that night.

I stopped breathing.

Dad looked at me.

“What night?””

I stared at the paper.

My childhood memories suddenly felt different.

A sound.

A flash.

A voice.

Something I had buried because everyone told me I was too young to remember.

Dad gently touched my hand.

“Nia?””

I looked up.

“I remember something.””

The room froze.

Vanessa took a step back.

“What?””

I looked directly at her.

“I remember seeing you.””

Her face went pale.

“Seeing me where?””

I swallowed.

“On the night my mother died.””

Nobody moved.

Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Nia… what do you remember?””

I looked at the woman who had taken food from my plate.

The woman who had made me feel unwanted.

The woman who had spent years trying to make me doubt myself.

And finally, after all this time, I remembered the one thing I had forgotten.

“I remember my mother screaming your name.””

Vanessa’s face turned white.

May you like

And then she whispered the words that made my father’s blood run cold.

“She wasn’t supposed to remember that.””
