Amused

Chapter 9: The Person My Father Thought Was Gone

Dad didn’t move.

None of us did.

The voice behind him had changed the entire room.

Because everyone thought the past was finally catching up with us.

But somehow…

The past had walked through the front door.

Slowly, Dad turned around.

His face lost all color.

“No.””

The person standing there looked older.

Tired.

Different.

But I could see it.

The recognition.

The history.

Dad whispered the name.

“Thomas.””

The man standing in the doorway looked at him.

“I know you didn’t expect to see me.””

Dad took a step back.

“I saw you.””

Thomas looked down.

“Yes.””

“You died.””

The words felt impossible.

Like the entire world had stopped making sense.

Thomas swallowed.

“I let people believe that.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Vanessa looked shocked.

She stared at him like she was seeing a ghost.

“Why are you here?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I’m here because Elena deserved the truth.””

My father’s hands curled into fists.

“Who are you?””

I looked at Dad.

He knew this man.

But I didn’t.

Thomas looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I stepped back.

“Find out what?””

He hesitated.

Then answered:

“I was your mother’s brother.””

The room went silent.

My mother’s brother.

Another person from her past.

Another person who knew things I never knew.

Dad looked furious.

“You were Elena’s brother?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think you were dead?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because that’s what I wanted.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was full of disbelief.

“No, Elena would have told me.””

Thomas looked at him.

“She tried.””

Those words hit Dad harder.

“What?””

Thomas walked into the room.

“Elena knew something was wrong before the accident.””

Rachel nodded.

“She did.””

Dad looked between them.

“You both knew?””

Thomas sighed.

“Yes.””

The anger on Dad’s face grew.

“You both knew my wife was in danger, and you let me believe it was an accident?””

Thomas looked down.

“We tried to protect you.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?””

His voice cracked.

“You let me bury my wife without knowing the truth.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no defense.

I watched Dad.

He had spent years grieving.

Years believing he understood the worst moment of his life.

And now he was learning that even his grief had been built on lies.

Thomas looked at me.

“I owe you an apology.””

I didn’t answer.

He continued.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

I looked away.

Everyone said that.

But hearing it from another person somehow hurt more.

Because every person who loved my mother carried pieces of her that I never got.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Thomas became serious.

“That night wasn’t supposed to happen.””

Dad looked at him.

“Explain.””

Thomas took a breath.

“Vanessa was being threatened.””

Vanessa immediately looked up.

“Thomas.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You don’t get to hide anymore.””

Vanessa looked away.

Thomas continued.

“The people she owed money to wanted information.””

“What information?””

Thomas looked at Dad.

“About Elena.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why my mother?””

“Because Elena had discovered something.””

Rachel opened the notebook.

“She discovered Vanessa wasn’t just trying to marry Marcus.””

Thomas nodded.

“She was being pressured.””

Dad frowned.

“By who?””

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

“By someone who knew her past.””

Daniel.

Everyone knew it.

Even before he said the name.

Dad turned toward Daniel.

“You.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Don’t pretend.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I was trying to fix what I helped create.””

Dad stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I knew Vanessa before she met you.””

My heart sank.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Dad’s voice was cold.

“How?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“We were involved in the same situation.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Dad looked at her.

“You knew him.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty was brutal.

Daniel continued.

“I was the person who introduced Vanessa to the people she owed money to.””

Dad looked shocked.

“You ruined her life?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She ruined her own life.””

Vanessa flinched.

Daniel continued.

“She borrowed money. She lied. She ran.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“And then she found Marcus.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Was I just an escape?””

Vanessa cried.

“At first.””

The answer hurt.

But she kept going.

“At first, yes.””

Dad looked away.

“But then I loved you.””

Nobody spoke.

“And I loved the children.””

Her eyes moved to Caleb and Ava.

Then to me.

“I know you don’t believe that.””

I didn’t.

Not completely.

Because love didn’t erase what she did.

Love didn’t make hunger disappear.

Love didn’t make fear disappear.

Dad looked at her.

“If you loved them, why hurt them?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Thomas spoke again.

“The night of the accident, Elena was meeting Vanessa because she wanted to help.””

Dad looked confused.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

Thomas nodded.

“She had found a way to get Vanessa away from the people chasing her.””

Rachel added:

“She wanted Vanessa to leave before she destroyed her own life.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And what happened?””

Vanessa’s face filled with regret.

“I lost control.””

The room went quiet.

“I was angry.””

She looked at me.

“I thought Elena was going to take everything away.””

Dad’s voice was barely audible.

“She was trying to save you.””

“I know.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I know now.””

Thomas continued.

“They argued beside the road.””

I listened.

“Then another car appeared.””

Dad looked at him.

“Another car?””

Thomas nodded.

“The people looking for Vanessa found them.””

My heart raced.

“So the crash…”

Thomas looked at me.

“Was not random.””

Nobody spoke.

“Who was driving?””

Thomas looked toward Daniel.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.””

Dad’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know?””

“I wasn’t there.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You were.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Thomas pulled out another document.

“You were following Vanessa.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“I followed because I was trying to help.””

“But you were there.””

“Yes.””

Dad stepped back.

“How many people were at that accident?””

Thomas answered quietly:

“Four.””

He counted.

“Elena.””

“Vanessa.””

“Daniel.””

“And someone else.””

Everyone went still.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

My heart dropped.

“But Elena knew.””

Rachel opened the notebook again.

Near the back was a page folded in half.

She unfolded it.

The writing was rushed.

Like my mother wrote it quickly.

She read the first line.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Dad asked.

Rachel looked terrified.

“Elena wrote the name.””

“Whose name?””

Rachel slowly lifted her eyes.

And then she said it.

The name that made Dad sit down.

The name that made Vanessa start crying.

The name that made Caleb whisper, “No…”

Because it was someone we all knew.

Someone who had been in our home.

Someone who had been pretending to help us uncover the truth.

Rachel held the page.

“She wrote…”

Her voice shook.

“‘The person who caused this is Marcus’s closest friend.’”

Dad stared.

“My friend?””

Rachel nodded.

And then the door behind us opened again.

A man stepped inside.

Someone I recognized.

Someone Dad trusted.

Someone who had spent the entire night standing beside him.

May you like

And he said only one sentence:

“Marcus, I can explain.””
