Amused

Chapter 6: The Truth About That Night

The video played for twelve seconds.

That was all.

Twelve seconds were enough to make my entire world tilt.

The image was grainy.

The angle was from a security camera across the street.

But I knew the car.

I knew the driveway.

I knew the person standing beside Brooke.

And I knew the person behind the wheel.

My sister.

Rachel.

My first thought wasn’t anger.

It was confusion.

Because Rachel had always been the person I trusted most after Daniel.

She was the person I called when Brooke was born.

The person who stayed beside me when my marriage almost fell apart years ago.

The person who knew every important moment of my life.

And now she was on a video that Grant was using like a weapon.

Brooke looked at me.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen.

“When was this?””

Grant smiled.

“Three months ago.””

The room felt colder.

Three months ago.

That was when Brooke had first started pulling away from him.

That was when she had secretly spoken to a lawyer.

That was when I thought she was simply stressed.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Brooke looked down.

She didn’t answer.

Grant did.

“She was leaving me.””

His voice was calm.

Almost satisfied.

“She was going to run.””

I turned toward him.

“Run?””

He shrugged.

“That’s what you call it when someone destroys their marriage and disappears.””

Brooke looked at him.

“I wasn’t destroying anything.””

“You were planning behind my back.””

“I was scared.””

The word hung in the room.

Scared.

Grant’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The irritation.

The frustration.

The fact that she had finally said the thing he didn’t want anyone to hear.

I stepped between them.

“What happened that night, Brooke?””

She looked at me.

Then at Rachel in the video.

Finally, she sat down.

“I was leaving.””

My heart sank.

“You were going to leave him?””

She nodded.

“I packed a bag.””

I looked at the box in her hands.

The documents.

The photos.

The evidence of a life she had been trying to escape.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

She looked ashamed.

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because I thought he would find me.””

The words were quiet.

But they broke me.

“Brooke…”

“He knew everything, Mom.””

“What do you mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“I had a friend help me make a plan. I was going to stay somewhere else for a few days. I was going to figure things out.””

“Rachel?””

She nodded.

“She was the only person who knew.””

I looked at Grant.

“And you found out.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

His face hardened.

“Because she wasn’t as careful as she thought.””

Brooke shook her head.

“No.””

Grant looked at her.

“You really want to do this?””

“Yes.””

Her voice trembled.

“But I’m done being afraid.””

That sentence changed something.

I saw it happen.

Grant heard it too.

The woman standing in front of him was no longer the woman who stayed silent at dinner.

She was no longer the woman who apologized just to keep peace.

She was my daughter.

The girl who used to climb trees despite being afraid of heights.

The girl who defended classmates when they were bullied.

The girl who once told me, at age eight, “Being scared doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing.””

Somewhere along the way, she had forgotten that.

But now she was remembering.

Grant crossed his arms.

“Fine.””

He looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

I didn’t answer.

He continued anyway.

“That night, I found out she was leaving.””

“How?””

He smiled.

“Because I checked.””

There it was.

No shame.

No denial.

Just an admission.

“You checked her phone?”” I asked.

“I was worried.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You were controlling.””

His jaw tightened.

“I was trying to save my marriage.””

Brooke laughed bitterly.

“By spying on me?””

“By knowing what was happening.””

“You mean knowing what I was planning.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was disturbing.

I stared at him.

“You don’t hear yourself, do you?””

Grant ignored me.

He looked at Brooke.

“You were going to leave without even talking to me.””

“I talked to you for months.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You complained.””

“I asked for respect.””

“You criticized me.””

“I told you I was unhappy.””

“And you chose your mother over your husband.””

Brooke’s face changed.

Because that was what he believed.

Not that he had hurt her.

Not that he had pushed her away.

That she had betrayed him by refusing to accept it.

I looked at the video again.

“Why show us this?””

Grant smiled.

“Because you think Rachel saved Brooke.””

He leaned against the wall.

“She didn’t.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Rachel knows more than she told you.””

Brooke looked nervous.

“Grant, stop.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You want honesty? Let’s have honesty.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

Grant pulled out his phone again.

He opened another file.

Another video.

This one was shorter.

He handed the phone to me.

I didn’t want to take it.

But I did.

The video showed a parking lot.

A woman standing beside a car.

Rachel.

My sister.

She was talking to someone.

I couldn’t see the person clearly.

Then the camera angle shifted.

And I saw him.

Grant.

My breath caught.

“What is this?””

Grant watched my reaction.

“That was two weeks before the restaurant.””

I looked at him.

“You met with Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He smiled.

“Ask her.””

I looked at Brooke.

She looked as shocked as I was.

“She never told me.””

Grant nodded.

“Exactly.””

The silence that followed was heavy.

I wanted to believe Rachel had an explanation.

I needed her to.

But there was a part of me that was terrified.

Because secrets were how this entire nightmare had started.

One person hiding something.

Then another.

Then another.

And suddenly everyone was standing in the middle of a truth nobody wanted to admit.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Grant smiled.

“Answer it.””

I hesitated.

Then I did.

“Rachel.””

Her voice came immediately.

“Claire, I need to explain.””

I looked at Grant.

“You knew she would call?””

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

“Grant is there, isn’t he?””

My heart dropped.

“How did you know?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I was afraid this would happen.””

Brooke stood up.

“Rachel, what did you do?””

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then my sister said something I never expected.

“I met with Grant because I was trying to get proof.””

I frowned.

“Proof of what?””

“Of what he was doing to Brooke.””

I looked at Grant.

He rolled his eyes.

“That’s a lie.””

Rachel continued.

“I knew Brooke wouldn’t leave without evidence. She kept thinking she needed a reason that everyone would believe.””

Brooke covered her mouth.

“Rachel…”

“I recorded conversations.””

The room went completely still.

“Why?”” I asked.

“Because Grant was preparing for this.””

“What do you mean?””

Rachel’s voice became urgent.

“Claire, listen to me carefully.””

I gripped the phone.

“Okay.””

“He wasn’t just trying to stop Brooke from leaving.””

A chill moved through me.

“What was he trying to do?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“He was building a case against her.””

I looked at Brooke.

“For what?””

The answer came quietly.

“He wanted to make everyone believe Brooke was unstable.””

Nobody spoke.

Grant’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely angry.

Not embarrassed.

Not caught.

Angry.

Rachel continued.

“He planned to tell people Brooke was mentally unwell. That she was making accusations because she was emotional. He wanted custody of everything before she even realized she needed to fight back.””

Brooke stared at Grant.

“You were preparing to destroy me.””

Grant stepped forward.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

But his voice was different.

Less confident.

Rachel had hit something real.

I looked at the phone.

“Rachel, why didn’t you tell me?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I was afraid you would confront him before we had enough proof.””

I closed my eyes.

Because once again, I understood.

Everyone had been making plans.

Everyone had been hiding information.

Everyone thought they were protecting Brooke.

But Brooke had been trapped in the middle.

Then Rachel said one final thing.

Something that made me realize this fight was much bigger than a bad marriage.

“Claire…”

“What?””

“I found out who has been helping Grant.””

I looked at Brooke.

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Someone in your own family.””
