Chapter 6: The Night I Stopped Being Afraid
I called Noah back seventeen times.
He didn't answer once.
Each time the phone rang, my hope rose for a few seconds.
Then it disappeared.
Straight to voicemail.
I sat on the edge of the hotel bed, staring at my phone like I could force it to light up.
Like I could somehow pull my son back through the screen.
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He didn't ask questions when he saw my face.
He already knew something had happened.
"What happened?""
I stood immediately.
"Noah called me.""
Daniel froze.
"What did he say?""
"He said he made a mistake.""
My voice cracked.
"He said he thought he had more time.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know.""
I grabbed my coat.
"I'm going back.""
Daniel stepped in front of the door.
"No.""
I stared at him.
"Move.""
"Sabrina.""
"Move.""
His face softened.
"I know what you're feeling.""
"No, you don't.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
Daniel didn't get angry.
He just nodded.
"You're right.""
That surprised me.
"You don't know what it's like to hear your child sound afraid.""
He looked down.
"But I know what it's like to lose someone because you waited too long.""
The room became quiet.
I looked at him.
"What happened?""
Daniel hesitated.
"My little brother.""
I had known Daniel for years.
He rarely talked about family.
"He was sixteen when he got involved with people he shouldn't have.""
He swallowed.
"My parents thought he was just being difficult. They thought he would grow out of it.""
"What happened?""
"We waited.""
His eyes lowered.
"We waited until waiting wasn't an option anymore.""
I understood.
Not because our situations were the same.
But because I knew the feeling of wishing you had acted one moment earlier.
I sat back down.
"So what do we do?""
Daniel picked up his laptop.
"We stop thinking like parents.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"We stop thinking emotionally.""
I almost laughed.
"I'm his mother. That's impossible.""
"No.""
He looked at me.
"It's necessary.""
He opened a new file.
"We think like people trying to bring Noah home.""
That was the first time all night someone said those words.
Not save him.
Not protect him.
Bring him home.
I felt something inside me shift.
"Okay.""
Daniel nodded.
"First, we need information.""
"About Ellis?""
"About everyone.""
He pulled up the photo Noah had sent.
"Why would Noah say he made a mistake?""
I stared at the image.
My son outside Ellis's house.
"Maybe he trusted someone he shouldn't have.""
"Claire?""
I looked at him.
"I don't know.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then we find out.""
For the next hour, we traced every connection we could.
Claire Bennett.
Northbridge Legal Solutions.
Chappell Meridian Holdings.
The trust.
The custody documents.
Then Daniel found something.
"Sabrina.""
I moved closer.
"What?""
He pointed at the screen.
"Claire wasn't just an employee.""
"What do you mean?""
"She was Ellis's personal financial manager.""
My stomach tightened.
"She handled his accounts?""
"Yes.""
"Then why would she help me?""
Daniel kept scrolling.
"Because she wasn't supposed to be in this position.""
"What position?""
"Being a witness.""
I stared.
"What?""
He clicked another file.
A resignation letter.
Dated two weeks ago.
The day after Noah found the documents.
Claire had resigned.
But there was a note attached.
A private complaint.
My hands went cold as I read it.
*I can no longer participate in activities involving financial concealment and manipulation of legal proceedings.*
Daniel looked at me.
"She knew.""
"She knew everything.""
"Maybe.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"She knew enough.""
Then I remembered Noah's message.
*Don't trust anyone who says they want to help you. Including Claire.*
My stomach twisted.
Maybe Noah wasn't warning me that Claire was evil.
Maybe he was warning me that Claire was scared.
A person who was scared could make dangerous choices.
Daniel continued searching.
Then suddenly he stopped.
"Sabrina.""
His voice was different.
"What?""
"I found something about the trust.""
I leaned forward.
A document appeared.
Not the one we found earlier.
A newer one.
Modified.
"When was this created?""
Daniel checked.
"The day before the custody hearing.""
My heart sank.
"The day before Noah spoke in court.""
"Yes.""
I read the document.
The trust had been changed.
A new condition had been added.
I felt sick.
"What does it say?""
Daniel read slowly.
"If the beneficiary, Noah Chappell, chooses to remain under the primary residence of Ellis Chappell, the trustee may authorize early access to restricted assets.""
I stared.
"What?""
Daniel nodded.
"Ellis needed Noah to choose him.""
"Because the custody decision unlocked the money.""
"Exactly.""
My hands shook.
Noah's courtroom statement.
The custody hearing.
The entire thing.
It wasn't about winning a father-son relationship.
It was about money.
Ellis had turned my son's life into a key.
I stood up.
"He used him.""
Daniel nodded.
"He used his own son.""
I grabbed my phone.
"I need to talk to Noah.""
"We need to be careful.""
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
Daniel looked serious.
"If Ellis is monitoring him, any message could expose him.""
I stopped.
My son.
The boy who had walked into court and destroyed his relationship with me because he believed it would keep me safe.
And now I wanted to call him because I couldn't handle the silence.
I hated that.
I hated that even my love could become a danger to him.
Then my phone buzzed.
Both of us froze.
A message.
From Noah.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*Mom, Dad knows about the card.*
My blood went cold.
Another message.
*He knows I gave it to you.*
Daniel stepped closer.
"Reply?""
I stared.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because if he knows, then Noah is already being watched.""
A third message appeared.
*I need you to listen carefully.*
I held my breath.
*The money isn't the important part.*
I frowned.
What did that mean?
Then:
*The card is connected to something else.*
Daniel looked at me.
"What else?""
I typed quickly.
*Noah, tell me what.*
The message showed as delivered.
Then nothing.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
One minute.
Then:
*Mom, if Dad asks, tell him you never opened the envelope.*
I froze.
Why?
Before I could type, another message appeared.
*Because the envelope has a tracker.*
My blood turned to ice.
Daniel cursed.
"Get rid of it.""
I grabbed the black envelope from the desk.
Too late.
The door to the hotel room clicked.
Both of us stopped.
Nobody knocked.
Nobody announced themselves.
The handle slowly turned.
My heart pounded.
Daniel moved in front of me.
The door opened.
And a man stepped inside.
Not Ellis.
Not security.
Someone younger.
Someone I didn't recognize.
He looked at the envelope in my hand.
Then at me.
"Sabrina Chappell?""
I didn't answer.
He reached into his jacket.
Daniel tensed.
"Don't.""
The man immediately raised his hands.
"I'm not here to hurt you.""
"Then why are you here?""
He looked nervous.
Almost afraid.
"My name is Marcus.""
"Who sent you?""
He hesitated.
Then:
"Your son.""
My breath caught.
"Noah?""
He nodded.
"He told me if anything happened, I was supposed to find you.""
I stepped closer.
"What happened?""
Marcus looked at the envelope.
"He knows his father discovered the tracker.""
My heart sank.
"Where is Noah?""
Marcus looked away.
And that was when I knew.
Something was wrong.
"Tell me.""
His voice dropped.
"Ellis took Noah to a private facility outside Columbus.""
I felt the room spin.
"What facility?""
Marcus swallowed.
"A place he owns.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"What kind of place?""
Marcus looked at both of us.
Then whispered:
"Where Ellis keeps the people who know too much.""
I couldn't breathe.
My son.
My twelve-year-old son.
Was somewhere controlled by the man who had spent months convincing everyone he was the better parent.
I clenched my fists.
No more fear.
No more waiting.
No more letting Ellis decide the rules.
"Where is it?""
Marcus looked at me.
"You don't understand.""
"I understand perfectly.""
My voice surprised even me.
"I spent fifteen years believing my husband protected my family.""
I picked up my coat.
"Now I know he was the person I needed protection from.""
Marcus hesitated.
"Mrs. Chappell, if you go there—"
I looked at him.
"What?""
He swallowed.
"You may not leave with Noah.""
I stared at him.
Then I said the words I should have said months ago.
"Then Ellis should have thought about that before he took my son.""
Marcus looked at me quietly.
Because for the first time...
I wasn't the woman Ellis controlled.
I was the woman coming for him.
May you like
And somewhere outside Columbus, my son was waiting.
I just hoped he could survive long enough for me to reach him.
