Chapter 3: The Document That Could Destroy Him
I didn't sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid of being alone.
I had been alone before.
I had spent the last year of my marriage feeling alone while sitting beside my own husband.
No.
I stayed awake because one sentence kept repeating inside my head.
*Your son's name is on the document.*
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah standing in that courtroom.
Twelve years old.
Wearing a suit.
Speaking words that sounded like they belonged to someone else.
I had thought he betrayed me.
But he had been carrying a secret.
A secret so dangerous that he believed hurting me was the only way to protect me.
At 5:17 in the morning, I finally stood up from the hotel bed.
The room looked exactly like it had when I arrived.
Empty.
Temporary.
A place for someone who had nowhere else to go.
But I wasn't that woman anymore.
I walked to the small desk and looked at the black card Noah had given me.
Six million dollars.
Proof.
Not a rescue.
Not a gift.
Proof.
I picked up my phone and searched for Claire Bennett.
Nothing.
No social media.
No company profile.
No recent information.
It was like she didn't exist.
That scared me more than if I had found something.
People who disappeared from the internet usually had a reason.
I called the number back.
Straight to voicemail.
I left a message.
"Claire, this is Sabrina. You called me last night. I need answers. Please call me back.""
I hung up.
Then I made another call.
A person I hadn't spoken to in almost three years.
My old friend from work.
Daniel Reyes.
Before I became Mrs. Ellis Chappell, before I left my career behind, Daniel and I worked together at a marketing firm downtown.
He was the one person who always told me I was making myself smaller.
The last time we spoke, he had said:
"Sabrina, I don't understand why you're disappearing for someone who would never disappear for you.""
I had been offended.
I had defended Ellis.
I had told Daniel he didn't understand marriage.
Now I wondered if Daniel understood it better than I did.
The phone rang four times.
Then:
"Sabrina?""
His voice sounded surprised.
"Daniel.""
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
"Are you okay?""
That question almost broke me.
Because nobody had asked me that in months.
Not really.
"I'm not sure.""
He didn't interrupt.
That was always Daniel's strength.
He knew when silence was more helpful than advice.
"I need help," I said.
Another pause.
"Tell me what happened.""
I looked at the black card.
"Ellis took my grandmother's inheritance.""
The silence changed.
It became serious.
"What?""
"I think he used it to build his company.""
Daniel exhaled slowly.
"Sabrina, are you sure?""
"No. But Noah found something.""
The moment I said my son's name, Daniel became quiet.
"What happened with Noah?""
I swallowed.
"He chose Ellis in court.""
Daniel didn't respond.
"He said he wanted to live with him.""
"Why?""
I closed my eyes.
"Because he said I couldn't give him a future.""
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Not at me.
At the situation.
"That's not Noah.""
"I know.""
The words came out immediately.
Because I finally knew.
My son had never stopped being my son.
Daniel asked:
"What did he find?""
I told him everything.
The note.
The six million dollars.
Claire's call.
The document.
When I finished, Daniel didn't speak for several seconds.
Then he said:
"Sabrina, I need you to come to my office.""
"I don't have a job anymore.""
"That wasn't what I meant.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"I mean you need someone on your side who understands what Ellis is doing.""
My stomach tightened.
"You think this is bigger than money?""
"I think Ellis has always been bigger than money.""
Those words stayed with me.
Because they were true.
Ellis never cared about money itself.
He cared about control.
I arrived at Daniel's office two hours later.
He had built a small consulting company since I left my old job.
Nothing like Ellis's empire.
No expensive lobby.
No marble floors.
Just a bright room filled with computers and people who looked like they actually enjoyed being there.
When Daniel saw me, his expression changed.
Not because I looked different.
Because he remembered who I used to be.
"You look tired," he said softly.
I smiled without humor.
"I feel tired.""
He nodded.
"Come on.""
He led me into a conference room and closed the door.
For the next hour, we searched.
Bank records.
Company registrations.
Public documents.
Anything connected to Ellis.
Then Daniel stopped.
"Sabrina.""
The way he said my name made me look up.
"What?""
He turned his laptop toward me.
"This company.""
I stared at the screen.
Chappell Meridian Holdings.
"I know.""
"No. Look at the ownership history.""
I leaned closer.
At first, I didn't understand.
Then I saw it.
The original registration.
The first investment.
The starting capital.
My name appeared.
Not Ellis's.
Mine.
My hands went numb.
"What?""
Daniel pointed.
"Your inheritance funded the first stage of this company.""
I whispered:
"How did nobody know?""
"Because Ellis structured it through private agreements.""
I stared at the screen.
The man who told the world he created everything himself had built his success on a foundation he hid from everyone.
Including me.
Then Daniel clicked another document.
My heart stopped.
"No.""
"What?""
I looked at the date.
Three days before the custody hearing.
The same week Ellis's lawyer argued I had no financial resources.
A transfer agreement.
A change in ownership.
And one name listed as the beneficiary.
Noah Chappell.
I covered my mouth.
"No.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Sabrina, what's wrong?""
I pointed at the screen.
"My son.""
The document showed that Ellis had transferred a controlling percentage of the company into a trust.
A trust created for Noah.
But there was something strange.
The trustee wasn't Noah.
It wasn't me.
It wasn't even Ellis.
It was an outside financial company.
Daniel zoomed in.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
"What is it?""
He read the details again.
"Sabrina... this isn't normal.""
"What?""
"This trust has a condition.""
"What condition?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
"The assets only become available when Noah turns eighteen.""
I waited.
"Okay.""
"That's not the strange part.""
My stomach twisted.
"What is?""
Daniel pointed to another section.
"If Ellis loses control of the company before Noah turns eighteen, the trust transfers everything to...""
He stopped.
"To who?""
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then said:
"To you.""
I stared at him.
The room was silent.
My mind tried to process it.
Why would Ellis create something that protected me?
It didn't make sense.
Unless...
"This isn't protection.""
Daniel looked at me.
"What?""
"It's a trap.""
The realization came slowly.
Like ice spreading across water.
Ellis had always been three steps ahead.
He wouldn't accidentally create a document that could destroy him.
There had to be another reason.
Daniel continued reading.
"Sabrina...""
"What?""
"There is a clause here.""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Read it.""
He turned the laptop.
I read the words.
*If Sabrina Chappell attempts to regain custody of Noah through legal action, all trust benefits will be frozen pending investigation.*
My blood ran cold.
He had planned this.
The money.
The custody battle.
The court.
Everything.
Ellis had created a system where if I fought to get my son back, I could lose the very thing Noah was trying to protect.
Daniel leaned back.
"He knew.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"He knew you would never abandon Noah.""
My eyes burned.
Because he was right.
Ellis knew my weakness.
My love for my son.
He had built a cage around me using the one thing I cared about most.
Noah.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
And three words that made my entire body freeze.
*Stop investigating, Sabrina.*
A second message arrived.
*Your son warned you to trust him. You should have listened.*
I looked at Daniel.
He saw my face.
"What happened?""
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
Then another notification appeared.
This time, there was a photo attached.
My blood turned cold.
It was Noah.
Standing outside Ellis's house.
Looking directly at the camera.
May you like
And beneath the photo was a message.
*The next time you see him may be the last time he chooses you.*
