Amused

Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Claire.

The name hung between us.

A single word.

But it carried fifteen years of questions.

I stared at Nathan, waiting for him to explain.

Waiting for him to tell me I misunderstood.

Waiting for him to do what he always did.

Make the impossible sound reasonable.

But this time, he couldn't.

Because Claire Whitmore wasn't just a name.

She was the woman in the photograph.

The woman who helped move the money.

The woman who had just called me and warned me not to trust my own husband.

"Why does Claire know what happened to my father?"" I asked.

Nathan didn't answer.

His eyes stayed on the phone in my hand.

"Emily.""

"No.""

My voice was sharper than I intended.

"Don't say my name. Answer me.""

He looked exhausted.

"I need to think.""

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

"You've had fifteen years to think.""

The flash drive still sat on the desk between us.

A tiny piece of plastic that somehow felt heavier than anything in the room.

"You knew she was involved.""

Nathan shook his head.

"Not like this.""

"Then how?""

He ran a hand over his face.

"Claire worked for Cole Enterprises.""

"I know that.""

"She handled financial records.""

"And?""

"And after your father died, she disappeared.""

I frowned.

"Disappeared?""

"She left the company. Changed her number. Moved away.""

"Why?""

Nathan looked at me.

"Because she knew someone was looking for her.""

A chill moved through me.

"Who?""

He didn't answer.

That was the problem with Nathan.

Even when he told the truth, there were always missing pieces.

Always a locked door.

Always something I had to discover myself.

I picked up the flash drive.

"I'm going to watch this.""

Nathan immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

The word came out too quickly.

Too desperately.

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

"No?""

His expression changed.

He realized his mistake.

"Emily, you don't know what's on there.""

"Exactly.""

I held up the drive.

"That's the first honest thing you've said.""

His face tightened.

"I am trying to protect you.""

I looked at him.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I thought about my father.

The letter.

The secrets.

The promises.

"Everyone protects me by lying to me.""

Nathan looked like he wanted to argue.

But he didn't.

Because he knew.

I walked past him.

"I need my laptop.""

"Emily.""

I turned.

For a second, I saw the old Nathan.

The man who held my hand when I gave birth.

The man who danced with me in our kitchen when we were too broke to afford a vacation.

The man I loved.

Then I saw the man who sat silently while his sister hurt me.

The man who hid my father's final message.

The man who let me build my life on a lie.

"I don't know who you are anymore.""

The words hurt both of us.

But they were true.

I spent the next hour in my mother's old house.

Nathan stayed outside.

He didn't follow me in.

Maybe he knew he had lost that right.

Maybe he was afraid of what I would find.

I connected the flash drive.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a folder appeared.

*CARTER EVIDENCE*

My hands went cold.

Carter.

My father's last name.

Not Nathan's.

Mine.

I opened it.

There were dozens of files.

Documents.

Audio recordings.

Videos.

My heart pounded.

I clicked the first video.

The screen showed my father's office.

The quality was poor.

The camera angle was from the corner of the room.

But I recognized everything.

The wooden desk.

The shelves.

The painting behind him.

My father sat there.

Alive.

Healthy.

Tired.

Across from him sat someone else.

I leaned closer.

The person turned.

My breath stopped.

Diane Cole.

Nathan's mother.

I watched silently.

My father's voice came through the speakers.

"I gave you a chance to fix this.""

Diane looked angry.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Don't lie to me, Diane.""

I froze.

I had never heard my father speak to anyone like that.

"You moved money from the company.""

Diane laughed.

"You have no proof.""

"I have enough.""

The video shook slightly.

My father leaned forward.

"Where is it?""

Diane crossed her arms.

"You really think Emily would believe you over me?""

My heart stopped.

My name.

She said my name.

My father looked devastated.

"Emily has nothing to do with this.""

"She has everything to do with this.""

Diane's voice became colder.

"Because once Nathan marries her, everything belongs to him.""

I covered my mouth.

The room suddenly felt too small.

The video continued.

My father looked confused.

"What are you saying?""

Diane smiled.

A smile I recognized.

The same one she wore at dinner.

The same one Vanessa wore when she thought she had won.

"I'm saying your daughter trusts the wrong people.""

The screen went black.

I sat there frozen.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Did you watch it?*

I stared at the screen.

Then replied:

*Yes.*

His response came quickly.

*Then you know.*

I typed:

*Know what?*

A few seconds passed.

Then:

*Your father wasn't investigating Nathan.*

I looked back at the laptop.

At the paused video.

At Diane's face.

*He was investigating Diane.*

My hands started shaking.

Diane.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who sat at my table.

The woman who watched her daughter hit me.

The woman who acted like I was never good enough.

She wasn't just cruel.

She was hiding something.

I opened the next file.

Another video.

This time, it was outside the office.

The timestamp was the night my father died.

I pressed play.

The hallway appeared.

Empty.

Then someone walked into frame.

Vanessa.

She was younger.

But it was her.

She looked nervous.

She carried a folder.

My breathing stopped.

She entered my father's office.

A few minutes later, Nathan appeared.

I froze.

Nathan.

He looked younger.

Scared.

He followed Vanessa inside.

The video had no sound.

But I watched their faces.

Vanessa was angry.

Nathan was arguing.

Then my father appeared.

The three of them were in the room.

Together.

I felt sick.

Then the screen changed.

A second camera angle.

Inside the office.

My father stood behind his desk.

Nathan and Vanessa stood across from him.

My father's voice played.

"You both need to understand something.""

Nathan looked terrified.

Vanessa looked furious.

"If Emily finds out what you did, she will never forgive you.""

The video froze.

I stared.

My father had said it.

Emily.

My name.

Then the recording continued.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You don't understand how this works.""

My father looked at her.

"No. I understand exactly how it works.""

Then Nathan spoke.

And what he said made my entire body go cold.

"Please, just give me time.""

My heart sank.

Because those were not the words of an innocent person.

Those were the words of someone trying to escape.

I stopped the video.

I couldn't watch anymore.

Not yet.

I needed air.

I walked outside.

Nathan was standing by his car.

Waiting.

When he saw my face, he knew.

"You watched it.""

I didn't answer.

He looked away.

"Emily...""

I held up the laptop.

"How long?""

His eyes closed.

"How long what?""

"How long did you know your mother was involved?""

Silence.

That was his answer.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Acceptance.

"You knew.""

Nathan stepped closer.

"I didn't know everything.""

"But you knew enough.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

I laughed.

"Stop saying that.""

He stopped.

"Because every time you say it, I remember that you were never protecting me.""

I looked toward the house.

"My father trusted you.""

Nathan's eyes filled with regret.

"I know.""

"No.""

My voice softened.

"You don't.""

I looked at him.

"He died believing you would tell me the truth.""

Nathan looked down.

And that was when I saw it.

A tear.

A real one.

But I couldn't let it change anything.

Not anymore.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke immediately.

"Emily, I don't have much time.""

Claire.

I stepped away from Nathan.

"What do you want?""

"I want you to know the truth before they stop me.""

My heart raced.

"Who is 'they'?""

A pause.

Then Claire whispered:

"The same people who caused your father's death.""

I looked back at Nathan.

He was watching me.

And he looked terrified.

Not because of Claire.

Because he knew what she was about to say.

"Emily," Claire said.

"Your husband wasn't the only person in that room the night your father died.""

I held my breath.

"Who else was there?""

The line went silent.

Then Claire answered:

"The person who has been controlling Nathan since the beginning.""

The call cut off.

And a second later, my phone received a photo.

A photo taken fifteen years ago.

At my father's funeral.

I opened it.

And my hands went numb.

Because standing behind Nathan...

Was me.

May you like

And standing beside me...

Was the person I trusted most.
