Chapter 4: The Last Words My Father Spoke
The message stayed on my screen.
*Ask him why your father blamed him before he died.*
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The words didn't make sense.
Or maybe they made too much sense.
Because somewhere deep inside me, buried beneath fifteen years of marriage and a thousand excuses, there had always been one memory I refused to touch.
The night my father died.
The night everything changed.
The night Nathan became the person who held my hand while I cried.
The night I thought I lost the only man in my life who had always protected me.
I looked at Nathan.
He looked like he had aged ten years in a few seconds.
"Who sent that?"" he asked.
His voice was different.
Not defensive.
Not annoyed.
Afraid.
I held my phone tightly.
"Why are you scared?""
Nathan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa stepped back.
For once, she wasn't enjoying the situation.
She looked nervous.
"Emily," Nathan said quietly, "you don't understand.""
I almost laughed.
That sentence.
The sentence people use when they don't want you to understand.
"Then help me understand.""
He ran a hand through his hair.
"Not here.""
I stared at him.
"Not here?""
My voice became sharper.
"You mean not in front of Vanessa?""
His eyes flickered toward his sister.
That was enough.
I turned to Vanessa.
"You knew.""
She looked away.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"I know exactly what I'm talking about.""
My hands were shaking, but my voice wasn't.
"You knew about the money. You knew about the documents. And now you know something about my father.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I know what Nathan told me.""
I froze.
"What did Nathan tell you?""
The silence stretched.
Then Nathan said her name.
"Vanessa.""
A warning.
A desperate one.
She looked at him.
And something passed between them.
Something old.
Something practiced.
They had done this before.
They had protected each other before.
I had just never been invited into the truth.
"Get out," Nathan said.
I looked at him.
"Excuse me?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Leave.""
She stared at him.
"You can't be serious.""
"I said leave.""
For a moment, I thought he was finally choosing me.
Finally.
After all these years.
Then I realized something.
He wasn't asking her to leave because he wanted to protect me.
He was asking her to leave because he was afraid of what she might reveal.
That hurt more.
Because even now, his first instinct wasn't honesty.
It was damage control.
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
As she walked past me, she stopped.
"You really don't know, do you?""
I didn't answer.
She smiled sadly.
"Ask him about the hospital.""
Then she walked out.
The door closed.
And suddenly it was just me and Nathan.
The two people who had promised forever.
Standing in a room full of secrets.
"What hospital?"" I asked.
Nathan sat down.
Slowly.
Like his body suddenly couldn't hold the weight of everything he had been carrying.
"Emily...""
"No.""
I stayed standing.
"Don't say my name like that.""
His eyes lifted.
"Like what?""
"Like you're about to ask me to forgive you.""
His face tightened.
Because he knew.
That was exactly what he would have done.
"I need you to listen.""
"I've been listening for fifteen years.""
The words came out before I could stop them.
And they hurt because they were true.
"I listened when your mother said I wasn't good enough.""
"I listened when Vanessa called me selfish.""
"I listened when you told me to ignore it.""
I stepped closer.
"I listened when you said I was making things bigger than they were.""
My voice cracked.
"But you know what I never heard?""
Nathan looked down.
"I never heard you say, 'Emily, they were wrong.''"
The room went quiet.
He had no answer.
Finally, he whispered:
"I'm sorry.""
Two words.
Two simple words.
The words I had wanted for years.
And somehow, they meant less than I imagined.
Because apologies only matter when they come before the damage is done.
"Tell me about my father.""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"I didn't kill him.""
My entire body went cold.
The fact that he said that first terrified me.
"I didn't ask that.""
"I know.""
He stood.
"My father had business problems.""
I stared at him.
"What does that have to do with mine?""
Nathan looked away.
"My father-in-law found out.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"My father found out what?""
Nathan was silent.
Then:
"That Cole Enterprises was in trouble.""
I waited.
But he didn't continue.
"Keep going.""
"He found financial records.""
The room seemed smaller.
"What records?""
Nathan swallowed.
"Records showing money was being moved.""
"By who?""
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
"Nathan.""
His shoulders lowered.
"By my father.""
I stared at him.
"Your father.""
"Yes.""
"And you?""
The pause was enough.
I stepped back.
"No.""
"Emily—"
"Did you know?""
His silence answered.
My chest tightened.
"You knew.""
"I was twenty-eight.""
"You were my husband.""
"I was scared.""
The anger that rose inside me was almost overwhelming.
"Scared?""
I pointed toward the hallway.
"Your sister hit me because she thought she could.""
I pointed at the documents on his desk.
"You stole from me because you thought you could.""
Then I touched my chest.
"And now you're telling me you let me believe my father died peacefully while you carried some secret connected to him?""
"I didn't let you believe anything.""
"Yes, you did.""
My voice broke.
"You stood beside me at his funeral.""
Nathan looked devastated.
"I loved your father.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Because there it was.
The real question.
Not what happened.
Why did he hide it?
He sat back down.
"Because he made me promise.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Your father.""
Nathan looked at me.
"He knew.""
The air disappeared from my lungs.
"He knew about his health?""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"He knew about the company.""
I stared at him.
"And?""
"He knew I was involved.""
The room went silent.
I felt like I was standing outside my own body.
"What does involved mean?""
Nathan looked at the floor.
"My father asked me to help.""
"Help with what?""
"Moving money.""
The words came out barely above a whisper.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"My father trusted you?""
"No.""
Nathan looked at me.
"He trusted that I would fix it.""
"And did you?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"No.""
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Because it was honest.
For once.
"What happened the night he died?""
Nathan didn't answer immediately.
Then he walked to his desk and opened a drawer.
He removed an old envelope.
Yellowed.
Worn.
Like it had been opened many times.
He placed it on the desk.
"Your father left this.""
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written on the front.
My father's handwriting.
My breath caught.
"Why do you have that?""
Nathan looked broken.
"Because he gave it to me.""
"Why?""
"Because he wanted me to give it to you after everything was fixed.""
I touched the envelope.
"Everything was never fixed.""
"No.""
Nathan's voice was quiet.
"It wasn't.""
I picked it up.
My hands trembled.
"What does it say?""
Nathan looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I looked up sharply.
"You don't know?""
"I never opened it.""
For a moment, I believed him.
Then I remembered everything else.
The money.
The secrets.
The lies.
"I don't believe you.""
"I know.""
I stared at the envelope.
A piece of my father that had been hidden from me for fifteen years.
A final message.
A final truth.
I opened it.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Emily, if you are reading this, it means Nathan failed to do what I asked.*
I looked at Nathan.
His face went pale.
I continued reading.
*I asked him to protect you from the truth until I could explain it myself. But if he has hidden this from you for too long, then you need to know everything.*
My hands shook.
The next sentence was even worse.
*The money was never stolen from the company. It was stolen from you.*
I looked up.
Nathan was crying silently.
Not dramatically.
Not pretending.
Actually crying.
But I kept reading.
Because after fifteen years of silence, I finally had my father's voice again.
And the next sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.
*Your husband was not the person who betrayed me.*
I stopped.
Nathan looked at me.
And whispered:
"Emily...""
I turned the page.
May you like
The final line was waiting.
*The person who betrayed us was someone you still trust.*
