Amused

Chapter 8: The Last Thing They Tried To Take

Vanessa denied it immediately.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

She sat across from me in Andrew’s office, arms crossed.

The same confidence.

The same attitude.

But now there was fear underneath.

Andrew placed a document on the table.

“You attempted to authorize a withdrawal.””

Vanessa looked at the paper.

“That’s not stealing.””

I stared at her.

“What is it?””

She looked at me.

“A mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

She leaned forward.

“Daniel, you don’t understand how hard things have been.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You stole from me and you’re explaining your struggles?””

“I didn’t steal.””

“You signed your name.””

She looked away.

For the first time, she looked young.

Not innocent.

Just scared.

“I thought it would be temporary.””

I whispered:

“Temporary?””

She didn’t answer.

Andrew collected the documents.

“The account is now frozen pending investigation.””

Vanessa stood.

“You’re really going to do this to your own sister?””

I looked at her.

“You threw ice water at my pregnant wife.””

Her face changed.

“That was months ago.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That was the moment I finally saw you.””

She left without saying goodbye.

That evening, Clara and I went for a walk.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She held my hand.

“You look sad.””

I nodded.

“I thought winning would feel better.””

She smiled sadly.

“Because you didn’t want to win.””

I looked at her.

“You wanted them to change.””

I didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

I wanted my family back.

Not this version.

The version I thought existed.

A week later, the investigation revealed everything.

My father had used my grandfather’s trust to pay personal expenses.

My mother had helped hide the records.

Vanessa had benefited from the money.

And the vacation?

The vacation had been their celebration.

Not just of their anniversary.

Of what they thought they could continue doing.

When the news became public, relatives who had attacked me started apologizing.

Messages filled my phone.

I ignored most of them.

One message, however, stopped me.

It was from my father.

I’m sorry.

Just two words.

I stared at them for a long time.

Then I replied:

For what?

The answer came hours later.

For making you feel like you were only valuable when you provided something.

I read it three times.

Because it was the closest thing to honesty he had ever given me.

But honesty after destruction does not erase the damage.

The final court hearing was scheduled.

This time, my parents didn’t look confident.

They looked tired.

Broken.

Human.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The decision was clear.

The trust was restored.

The claims against me were dismissed.

My parents were ordered to repay what they had taken.

But the judge said something I never forgot.

“Money can be returned. Trust cannot.””

Outside the courthouse, my father stopped me.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

I looked at him.

At the man who raised me.

At the man who hurt me.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you yet.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

For once, he didn’t argue.

He just walked away.

That night, Clara placed her hand on my stomach.

Our baby kicked.

I smiled.

“He’s strong.””

She laughed.

“He gets that from you.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“He gets it from you.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

Daniel, I need to tell you the truth about what happened before the dinner.

I stared at the screen.

Because there was one question I never answered.

Why did Vanessa suddenly decide to attack Clara that night?

And the answer was about to reveal something nobody expected.
