Chapter 4: The Secret Behind The Vacation

The lawyer’s name was Andrew Collins.

I had known him for years.

He handled my business contracts and investments.

He wasn’t someone who called casually.

I stepped outside.

“What did you find?””

There was a pause.

“Your parents recently transferred several large payments.””

“To where?””

“Your sister.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“How much?””

“Over the last eighteen months?””

He paused.

“Approximately $180,000.””

I stared at the street.

“What?””

“Daniel, I thought you knew.””

I didn’t.

Because nobody had told me.

My parents had spent years telling me they were struggling.

They told me retirement was difficult.

They told me they needed help.

And I believed them.

I paid their bills.

I covered repairs.

I bought groceries.

I never questioned it.

Because they were my parents.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I reviewed the documents connected to the vacation payments.””

I went silent.

“What documents?””

“Your parents had planned to reimburse themselves using funds from an account connected to you.””

My heart started beating faster.

“They were going to pay me back?””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“They were going to make it appear that they paid.””

I gripped the phone.

“Explain.””

“They created paperwork suggesting they contributed money toward the trip. But the actual funds came from your accounts.””

I felt sick.

The vacation wasn’t just something they accepted.

They were planning to rewrite the story.

To make themselves look independent.

To make me look like nothing more than a source of money.

When I returned inside, Clara immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I sat beside her.

“My parents were using me.””

She frowned.

“Daniel.””

“They weren’t just accepting help.””

I told her everything.

She listened quietly.

Then she whispered:

“That’s why Vanessa didn’t care.””

“What?””

“She knew.””

I looked at her.

“She knew she could hurt me because she thought you’d never leave.””

Those words hit harder than I expected.

Because she was right.

I had spent my entire life proving I was loyal.

They assumed loyalty meant permission.

The next morning, I received another message.

From Vanessa.

We need to talk.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

Where?

Ten minutes later, she arrived.

She walked into the house like she owned it.

“Daniel, this has gone too far.””

I looked at her.

“You attacked my wife.””

She rolled her eyes.

“I apologized.””

“No, you didn’t.””

“I said I was sorry everyone got upset.””

“That’s not an apology.””

She crossed her arms.

“You’re really choosing her?””

I laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“This isn’t about choosing.””

I stepped closer.

“It’s about realizing who was never choosing me.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Then her expression changed.

“You think you’re better than us now.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think I finally stopped letting you treat me like I’m less than you.””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Because she had no answer.

Before leaving, she turned around.

“You’re going to regret this.””

I watched her walk away.

And I believed her.

Not because she was right.

Because I knew my family was about to do something desperate.

That night, my phone received an email.
