Chapter 8: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
I stared at Olivia.
The wind moved through the trees beside the bridge.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
“What do you mean?””
Olivia looked exhausted.
“The trust has your name on it.””
“Yes.””
“But that’s not the whole story.””
I hated those words.
Not the whole story.
Every person in my family seemed to have a different version of reality.
“What is the whole story?””
She looked away.
“When I found the documents, I thought Dad had chosen you.””
I listened.
“I thought he loved you more.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Olivia…”
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes quickly.
“I know that sounds horrible.””
“It does.””
She nodded.
“I spent my entire life trying to be the perfect daughter.””
I almost said something.
But I didn’t.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t performing.
She was admitting something.
“Everyone thought I had everything,” she continued.
“But nobody saw the pressure.””
I looked at her.
“I’m not saying that excuses what you did.””
“It doesn’t.””
Her voice broke.
“I destroyed your dress because I wanted to hurt you.””
I looked away.
“At least you’re honest.””
She nodded.
“I wanted you to feel small.””
The words hurt.
But they were real.
“And then Dad walked in.””
“Yes.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I thought he would be angry for five minutes.””
She looked at me.
“But he looked at that dress like it was something precious.””
I remembered.
My father holding the torn fabric.
“I had never seen him look at something I owned that way.””
I frowned.
“Olivia…”
She shook her head.
“That’s when I realized something.””
“What?””
“You weren’t the favorite.””
I stared.
“You were the forgotten one.””
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
Because it was true.
My parents celebrated Olivia loudly.
But they protected me quietly.
I never understood the difference.
Olivia continued.
“Dad didn’t give you the trust because he thought you were better.””
“Then why?””
She looked at the river.
“Because he knew I would become exactly like him.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Michael.””
The name made my chest tighten.
“He was our half-brother.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
Olivia nodded.
“I found the documents.””
I couldn’t process it.
“Rachel…”
“Is Dad’s daughter.””
My mouth opened.
No words came out.
Olivia continued.
“Michael wasn’t just Dad’s business partner.””
She took a breath.
“He was Dad’s brother.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
She pulled out a folder.
“Look.””
Inside were documents.
Birth certificates.
Old records.
Names.
Connections.
My hands trembled.
Rachel Hayes wasn’t just connected to the past.
She was family.
My father had hidden an entire branch of our family.
“Why?””
Olivia whispered:
“Because Michael did something unforgivable.””
“What?””
“He tried to use Rachel to destroy Dad.””
I looked at the papers.
“But Rachel seemed kind.””
“She was a child.””
That sentence silenced me.
A child caught in an adult war.
I closed the folder.
“So why tell me this?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Because Dad is going to make the same mistake again.””
“What?””
“He wants to give you control of everything.””
I frowned.
“Isn’t that his choice?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“But if you accept it without knowing the truth, you’ll become part of the same cycle.””
I felt confused.
“What cycle?””
She looked directly at me.
“Everyone in this family fights over being chosen.””
The words stayed with me.
Because maybe she was right.
My father.
Michael.
Olivia.
Even me.
Everyone wanted proof they mattered.
My phone rang.
My father.
I answered.
“Emily, where are you?””
“With Olivia.””
A long silence.
Then:
“Leave.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Emily, listen to me carefully.””
His voice sounded afraid.
“She found the one thing she was never supposed to find.””
I looked at Olivia.
“What?””
My father whispered:
“The original trust agreement.””
The call ended.
I stared at my sister.
“What does that mean?””
Olivia looked terrified.
May you like
And then she said:
“It means your father wasn’t the one who created the trust.””
