Chapter 5: What My Father Left Behind

The next day felt unreal.

Like I was watching someone else’s life.

A stranger’s family.

A stranger’s secrets.

But it was mine.

Rachel Hayes met me at a small coffee shop outside town.

I almost didn’t go.

Almost.

But curiosity was stronger than fear.

She was sitting by the window when I arrived.

She looked about my age.

Maybe a little older.

The first thing she said was:

“You look exactly like him.””

I stopped.

“Like who?””

“Your father.””

I sat down.

“Why are you here?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Because Olivia contacted me two weeks ago.””

My hands went cold.

“She did what?””

Rachel nodded.

“She asked me questions about your father.””

“Why?””

“Because she was looking for something.””

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“The Carter Family Trust.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know what that is.””

“That’s the problem.””

She opened her bag.

She pulled out a document.

My name was written on the top.

Emily Rose Carter.

I stared.

“What is this?””

Rachel whispered:

“Your father created it when you were born.””

I read the first page.

A trust.

An account.

A legal agreement.

I didn’t understand.

“How much is in it?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Enough that Olivia would do anything to control it.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Your father knew what kind of person she was becoming.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She showed me another page.

A letter.

My father’s handwriting.

The date was from ten years ago.

The words were clear.

“If Emily ever feels invisible in this family, make sure she knows her worth was never dependent on anyone’s approval.””

I couldn’t breathe for a moment.

My father had known.

He had seen me.

All those years when I thought nobody noticed.

Someone did.

Rachel continued.

“Your sister found out about the trust.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

My mind flashed back.

The comments.

The jealousy.

The constant need to compete.

The dress.

It wasn’t random.

It was calculated.

“She wanted the trust?”” I whispered.

Rachel nodded.

“Only you can access it.””

I looked down.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?””

“Because he wanted you to grow up knowing your own value before knowing what you had.””

That sounded exactly like him.

When I returned home, everyone was in the living room.

My father.

My mother.

Olivia.

The moment Olivia saw my face, she knew.

“You met Rachel.””

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

She smiled weakly.

“I was trying to understand.””

“No,” my father said.

“You were trying to take.””

Olivia stood.

“I deserve something!””

The room went silent.

I had never heard her sound so desperate.

“I spent my whole life being the daughter everyone expected things from.””

My father looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

She laughed.

“You all loved Emily because she was easy to love.””

My chest tightened.

“Olivia…”

“No!””

She pointed at me.

“You get sympathy. You get protection. You get everything handed to you.””

I looked at her.

“I worked for everything I had.””

She looked away.

“Not everything.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Olivia wasn’t finished.

She grabbed her handbag.

The same designer bag.

The same bag that started everything.

“You think you won?””

She smiled.

A cold smile.

“You don’t even know what Dad did to get that trust.””

My father’s face changed.

“Olivia.””

She walked toward the door.

“You should ask him why Michael Hayes really disappeared.””

She opened the door.

Then stopped.

“And ask him why he chose you over his own daughter.””

The door slammed.

I looked at my father.

For the first time in my life…

I saw fear in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

And I realized Olivia’s final words weren’t a lie.

May you like

They were a warning.

Because there was still one secret my father had never told me.
