Amused

Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Locked Gate

At 12:07 a.m., Alejandro Serrano's black SUV screeched to a halt outside the Villarreal estate.

The mansion stood behind iron gates and high stone walls, surrounded by perfectly trimmed hedges and security cameras. Mateo had insisted on every expensive detail when the house was built.

He had called it a fortress.

That night, it became a prison.

Alejandro jumped out of the SUV before the engine had stopped running.

Two vehicles carrying his private medical team arrived behind him. An ambulance was approaching from the opposite direction, its siren cutting through the quiet streets.

He rushed toward the gate.

A security guard stepped forward, one hand raised.

"Sir, you can't enter without authorization.""

Alejandro stared at him.

"My name is Alejandro Serrano. There's a pregnant woman inside who has fallen down the stairs. Open the gate.""

"I'm sorry, sir. Mr. Villarreal has instructed us not to admit visitors after midnight without his direct approval.""

"Then call him.""

The guard took out his phone.

"I've already tried. His line is unavailable.""

Alejandro looked through the bars toward the mansion.

Every window was dark.

"His wife is lying injured inside his house, and you need his permission to save her?""

The guard swallowed.

"Those are my instructions.""

Alejandro stepped closer.

"Look at me. If Camila dies because you refused to open this gate, do you honestly believe Mateo Villarreal will protect you? He'll blame you before the funeral flowers wilt.""

The guard's expression changed.

Another security employee appeared in the booth.

"What's happening?""

"Mr. Serrano says Mrs. Villarreal needs medical attention.""

"Mr. Villarreal said no unauthorized entry.""

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

"Then listen carefully. I am not asking to attend a party. I am asking you to let doctors reach a woman who may be bleeding to death.""

He pointed toward the approaching ambulance.

"Open the gate.""

The second guard hesitated.

Then, somewhere inside the property, a phone rang.

The first guard answered.

He listened, looked at Alejandro, and slowly lowered his hand.

"Mrs. Villarreal has been found," he said.

Alejandro's stomach dropped.

"What do you mean, found?""

"The housekeeper arrived early. She saw her through the glass doors.""

"Open it!""

The guard punched in the code.

The iron gates began sliding apart.

Alejandro ran before they were fully open.

He crossed the driveway, climbed the front steps, and found the housekeeper, Teresa, standing near the entrance with a trembling hand over her mouth.

"Where is she?"" he demanded.

"Inside, sir. At the bottom of the staircase.""

Alejandro pushed through the doors.

The sight stopped him cold.

Camila lay on the marble floor beneath the sweeping staircase, one arm extended toward the wall. Her pale nightdress was stained with blood. Her phone rested several feet away, its cracked screen still displaying the last outgoing call.

Mateo.

Seventeen attempts.

Alejandro knelt beside her.

"Camila? It's me. Alejandro.""

Her face was almost colorless.

A doctor dropped beside him and immediately began assessing her condition.

"Ma'am, can you hear me?""

No response.

The doctor checked her pulse and looked toward the medical team.

"She's alive, but her condition is critical. We need to move now.""

Another medic opened a bag of equipment.

"Possible abdominal trauma. Significant bleeding. We need to stabilize her for transport.""

Alejandro leaned closer to Camila's face.

"Come on, Camila. You've got to stay with us.""

Her eyelids fluttered.

For a moment, he thought she was waking up.

Then her lips moved.

"Mateo...""

Alejandro felt something twist painfully inside him.

"I'm here," he whispered.

She struggled to breathe.

"He didn't... answer.""

Alejandro closed his eyes for half a second.

Then he opened them and forced himself to remain focused.

"Don't worry about Mateo. You're going to the hospital.""

Camila's fingers twitched against the floor.

"The baby...""

"The doctors are taking care of both of you.""

He didn't know whether that was true.

He only knew she needed something to hold on to.

The medical team worked quickly. One doctor prepared oxygen while another monitored Camila's vital signs. They carefully transferred her onto a stretcher, supporting her head and abdomen.

Teresa followed them, sobbing.

"She was only going to get water," the housekeeper said.

"I told her she shouldn't walk alone at night, but she said she didn't want to wake anyone.""

Alejandro turned toward her.

"How long was she down here?""

"I don't know. I wasn't supposed to come until morning.""

"Who was responsible for checking on her?""

Teresa flinched.

"Mr. Villarreal dismissed the night nurse two weeks ago. He said Camila was perfectly capable of taking care of herself.""

Alejandro stared at her.

"He dismissed her?""

"He said the house didn't need extra staff. Mrs. Villarreal asked him not to, but he wouldn't listen.""

The stretcher began moving.

Alejandro followed it toward the door.

"Get her medical records, her doctor's number, and anything the hospital needs. Do it now.""

Teresa nodded frantically.

Outside, the ambulance doors swung open.

A medic climbed inside while another adjusted the oxygen mask over Camila's face.

Alejandro caught her hand before they closed the doors.

"Camila, listen to me. I'm going to follow you. You won't be alone.""

Her fingers barely moved against his.

He held on until the medic gently pulled him back.

The ambulance sped away.

Alejandro stood in the driveway, breathing hard, his shirt sleeves stained from kneeling beside her.

Then his eyes fell on the phone Teresa had carried outside.

Its screen had lit up.

The call history was still open.

Seventeen missed attempts to reach Mateo.

Alejandro stared at the number.

He remembered another night, five years earlier, when Mateo had called him in tears, begging for help after his company was on the verge of collapse.

Alejandro had answered on the first ring.

He had transferred money, introduced investors, and put his own reputation on the line to save his friend's business.

Six months later, Mateo had stolen a major client, spread lies about him, and accused him of sabotaging the company.

Alejandro had lost a business partnership worth millions.

Mateo had gained another fortune.

When Alejandro confronted him, Mateo had shrugged.

"Business is business," he had said.

"You should have protected yourself.""

That was the day their friendship died.

Now, standing outside Mateo's mansion, Alejandro looked at the seventeen calls and understood something he hadn't understood before.

Mateo hadn't simply failed to protect his wife.

He had chosen not to.

Alejandro handed the phone to his assistant, who had arrived in a second vehicle.

"Preserve everything on that device. Don't delete or change a thing.""

His assistant glanced at the screen.

"These are all calls to Mateo?""

"Yes.""

"Should I contact the police?""

"Not yet. First, make sure the hospital has everything it needs. Then contact our legal team. I want the estate's security footage preserved, the emergency call records requested through the proper channels, and every staff member's account documented.""

His assistant nodded.

"Understood.""

Alejandro looked back at the mansion.

A light had finally switched on in an upstairs window.

Somewhere beyond those walls sat the man who had built his life around the belief that nothing could touch him.

Alejandro pulled out his own phone.

He dialed Mateo.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He tried again.

Voicemail.

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"Of course.""

He ended the call and looked toward the road where the ambulance had disappeared.

"Don't worry, Camila," he murmured.

"I'll make sure the truth comes out.""

Then he turned to his assistant.

"Find out where Mateo is.""

Within minutes, the answer arrived.

A private nightclub in San Pedro Garza García.

Alejandro climbed into his SUV.

He wasn't going there to fight Mateo.

He wasn't going there to beg him to come to the hospital.

He was going there because Mateo deserved to see the consequences of his choices with his own eyes.

And Alejandro intended to make certain he never forgot them.

At 12:31 a.m., the private club's music was still shaking the walls.

Mateo had switched off his phone, but the room's energy had changed. Diego was checking his messages. Valeria had stopped smiling quite so freely.

"Your wife sounded genuinely scared," she said.

Mateo poured himself another drink.

"She's fine.""

"How do you know?""

"Because she's always fine after she gets attention.""

Valeria watched him.

"What if something really happened?""

Irritation flashed across his face.

"Do you want to spend our night talking about Camila?""

"No. I just don't understand why you married her if you hate being around her so much.""

Mateo set his glass down.

"Because marriage isn't always about love.""

Diego raised an eyebrow.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Camila came from a respected family. Her father had connections. Her inheritance helped us secure the first commercial property. We built something together.""

"She helped build your company?"" Valeria asked.

I looked at her sharply.

"She helped in the beginning. I did the real work.""

It was a lie, but I had repeated it so often that it sounded like the truth.

Camila had handled the financial records when the company had only six employees. She had negotiated payment extensions with suppliers, worked through weekends, and sold jewelry her mother had given her to cover our payroll.

She had never asked for the money back.

I had convinced myself that was what a good wife did.

Valeria leaned against me.

"Well, you don't owe her the rest of your life just because she helped you once.""

I smiled.

"Exactly.""

Then the club's security manager appeared at the entrance to the VIP room.

He looked uneasy.

"Mr. Villarreal?""

"What?""

"There's a man downstairs asking for you.""

"Tell him to make an appointment.""

"He says it's urgent.""

"Who is it?""

The manager hesitated.

"Alejandro Serrano.""

My smile disappeared.

For five years, I had worked to erase Alejandro from my life. I had told people he was dishonest, unreliable, and jealous of my success. I had warned mutual acquaintances not to do business with him.

None of it had worked.

Alejandro had become wealthier, more respected, and more influential than ever.

And now he was here.

I stood up.

"What does he want?""

The manager looked at me carefully.

"He says your wife is in the hospital.""

The glass slipped from my hand.

It struck the table and shattered.

For one long second, the music seemed to fade into the distance.

Then I heard Alejandro's voice from the corridor.

"Mateo.""

I turned.

He stood in the doorway, his dark shirt wrinkled, his sleeves stained with blood.

My blood ran cold.

"What the hell happened to you?""

Alejandro looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something far worse.

Disgust.

"Your wife fell down the stairs," he said.

"She was bleeding, and she couldn't get up.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"She called you seventeen times.""

Nobody moved.

Alejandro stepped closer.

"I answered the eighteenth call. I got there before you did because you couldn't be bothered to answer your own wife's phone.""

My mouth went dry.

"Is she—"

"She's alive.""

Relief hit me so suddenly that I had to grab the back of a chair.

May you like

Then Alejandro delivered the words that shattered it.

"But the doctors don't know if your son will survive.""
