Amused

Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my heart.

My mother stood beside her car, clutching her handbag as if it contained something far more valuable than money.

Richard Cole held the document between us.

I stared at the signature.

Aaliyah Bennett.

It looked almost exactly like mine.

Almost.

The capital A was slightly too narrow. The second loop in the B was missing. Whoever had written it had studied my signature carefully, but they hadn't understood how I naturally moved my hand.

It was a forgery.

"Mom," I whispered.

"What is this?""

Gloria glanced at Richard.

"This is a private family matter.""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"Mrs. Bennett, I think we need to be clear. You told our office that Aaliyah had authorized you to handle the financial arrangements for her procedure.""

"She did.""

"No, I didn't!"" I snapped.

Richard raised his hand.

"Please. I need to establish the facts before making any further decisions.""

My mother turned toward me.

"Don't embarrass yourself. You have no idea how complicated these arrangements are.""

I took a step closer.

"Then explain them.""

She sighed impatiently.

"Your sister has an opportunity to build something important. The competition prize would help the entire family.""

I stared at her.

"The prize was supposed to pay for my surgery.""

"And your surgery can wait.""

The sentence came out so casually that I almost didn't recognize it.

Richard looked at her.

"Mrs. Bennett, that's not what you told us.""

Gloria's expression changed.

"What?""

"You represented that your daughter had voluntarily agreed to redirect the competition funds toward a family-managed account. You specifically stated that the money would remain available for her medical expenses.""

I looked at him.

"Did she tell you I agreed?""

"Yes.""

"Did you ever speak to me?""

"No. We received a signed authorization through Mrs. Bennett.""

I felt sick.

My mother had used my medical condition to make herself sound trustworthy.

"Show me the document.""

Richard hesitated.

Then he handed it over.

The first page contained my name, address, date of birth, and the name of the clinic.

The second page contained the authorization.

At the bottom was the signature.

But there was something else.

A small paragraph explained that any prize money awarded to me would be deposited into an account managed by Gloria Bennett.

I read it twice.

"Why would I give you control of my prize money?""

Gloria crossed her arms.

"Because you're inexperienced with financial matters.""

"I'm twenty-two.""

"And you have no idea how expensive running a household is.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's your excuse?""

She stepped closer.

"Listen to me, Aaliyah. You live under my roof. I feed you.

I give you a place to sleep. You think you can keep everything for yourself?""

"I pay rent.""

"Not enough.""

"I pay for my own food.""

"Don't raise your voice at me.""

Richard interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett, I strongly recommend that we stop this conversation until the authorization has been independently verified.""

My mother glared at him.

"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

"No. I'm following procedure.""

I looked at the document again.

"Can you stop this?""

Richard nodded.

"The authorization can be placed on hold immediately. We will also notify the clinic that the document is disputed. No funds will be transferred under it.""

I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

"Thank you.""

He handed me his business card.

"Please contact our office directly. Do not sign anything else until the matter is reviewed.""

Then he walked toward his car.

My mother waited until he was out of earshot.

"You've made a terrible mistake.""

I looked at her.

"Did you forge my signature?""

Her jaw tightened.

"I handled something you were too emotional to handle.""

"That's not an answer.""

"You always have to turn everything into a fight.""

"Did you forge it?""

Gloria's eyes flashed.

"After everything I've done for you, this is how you repay me?""

I stepped backward.

For years, I had tried to earn that woman's approval.

I had worked harder, asked for less, stayed quieter, and swallowed every insult because some part of me still believed that if I became good enough, she might finally choose me.

But standing there, holding a document with my forged signature, I understood that she didn't want me to succeed.

She wanted me manageable.

"You're my mother," I said quietly.

"How could you do this?""

She adjusted her handbag.

"Because someone in this family has to think about the future.""

Then she got into her car.

I watched her drive away.

My phone vibrated.

It was Tessa.

Mom says you threatened to report her. Don't you dare destroy this family.

I typed a response.

You stole my cake. Now you're involved in stealing my surgery money. Stay away from me.

I blocked her number.

When I returned to the competition hall, the final round was about to begin.

Clara was standing near the judges' table.

She noticed my expression immediately.

"Is everything all right?""

"No.""

She waited.

"My mother tried to take control of my prize money. She submitted a document with my forged signature.""

Clara's face hardened.

"Have you contacted the clinic?""

"The representative stopped the authorization.""

"Good. Do you need to leave?""

I looked toward my display.

My chocolate flowers were still standing.

My creation was still mine.

"No," I said.

"I want to finish.""

Clara studied me for a moment.

Then she nodded.

"All right. But if you need assistance, tell me.""

The final judging began.

Eight competitors remained.

Tessa's cake was still under investigation, but the committee had not yet issued a formal disqualification. She was allowed to remain in the hall while the review continued.

She stood near the judges' area, looking furious.

When she saw me, she walked over.

"What did you tell Mom?""

I didn't answer.

"She's been crying in the car.""

I looked at her.

"Did you know about the authorization?""

Tessa rolled her eyes.

"Mom handles everything.""

"Did you know she was trying to take my prize money?""

She hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"Tessa?""

She lowered her voice.

"She said it would be better if the money stayed in the family.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"So you knew.""

"Don't act like you're innocent. You've been making everyone miserable with this surgery.""

I stared at her.

"You're seriously blaming me for needing medical treatment?""

"You're always making people feel guilty.""

I looked at her pink designer apron.

"How much did that cost?""

She frowned.

"What?""

"Your apron. Your new phone. Your photography sessions. Who paid for all of that?""

"That's none of your business.""

"Exactly.""

She leaned closer.

"Mom said the money would help me launch my brand. I have plans, Aaliyah. Real plans. You just want to sit in a kitchen forever.""

I glanced at my chocolate bouquet.

"At least I know how to make something with my own hands.""

Her expression darkened.

Before she could respond, Clara approached with two committee members.

"Miss Bennett, Miss Tessa Bennett. We need both of you at the judges' table.""

Tessa straightened her apron.

"Is the investigation finished?""

"Yes," Clara replied.

"We have reached a decision.""

The entire room seemed to quiet.

Clara placed a folder on the table.

"The committee has reviewed the photographic evidence, the original design sketches, the digital timestamps, and the competitor's statements.""

Tessa swallowed.

"Okay.""

Clara continued.

"The blue floral cake was created by Aaliyah Bennett. The committee has found no evidence that Tessa Bennett designed or independently produced the submitted work.""

Tessa's face went white.

"That's not fair.""

Clara looked at her.

"The entry is disqualified for misrepresentation and violation of the originality policy.""

A murmur spread through the room.

Tessa turned toward me.

"You did this!""

I shook my head.

"No. You did.""

Clara raised her voice.

"The committee also wishes to clarify that Aaliyah Bennett's replacement entry remains eligible for final judging.""

For the first time that day, I heard applause.

It started with one person.

Then another.

Soon, several competitors were clapping.

I looked at my chocolate bouquet.

I had made it from the pieces my mother had thrown away.

And somehow, it had brought me here.

But Tessa wasn't finished.

May you like

She leaned toward me and whispered:

"You might have won this round. But Mom has something that will make sure you never get that surgery.""
