Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Tried to Bury

The next morning, I woke up with one thought.

I needed to know why.

Not just what my mother had done.

Not just how far she had gone.

Why.

Because people didn’t build an entire plan overnight.

They didn’t forge signatures, create false documents, and prepare custody paperwork because of one argument.

This had been growing for months.

Maybe longer.

I sat at the kitchen table while the sun came through the windows.

The same table where my mother had smiled during family dinners.

The same table where she told me she was only helping.

Now every memory felt different.

Amy walked in holding Frederick.

He was finally feeling better.

That alone made me grateful.

But seeing him in her arms reminded me of the worst part.

My mother had used our son as a weapon.

“How long have you known?”” I asked.

Amy stopped.

“Known what?””

“That she wanted custody.””

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Sadness.

“I suspected.””

I stood up.

“You suspected?””

She looked down.

“Connor…”

“No, I need to understand.””

She nodded slowly.

“After Frederick was born, your mother changed.””

“How?””

“She stopped acting like a grandmother.””

Amy sat down.

“She started acting like she was his parent.””

I remembered small moments.

My mother correcting Amy.

My mother saying things like, “When I raised children…”

My mother taking Frederick from Amy’s arms without asking.

I thought those were harmless.

I was wrong.

“She told me I was inexperienced,” Amy said.

“She told me babies needed someone who knew what they were doing.””

I felt anger rising again.

“And I didn’t notice.””

Amy looked at me.

“You were trying to provide.””

“That doesn’t excuse it.””

“No.””

She reached for my hand.

“But it explains why she had so much access.””

That was the hardest truth.

My mother didn’t force her way into our lives.

I opened the door.

I trusted her.

I gave her information.

I gave her money.

I gave her opportunities.

And she used every one.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.””

“I did.””

I stood.

“What?””

“I looked into the company connected to the property documents.””

“And?””

“It’s registered to someone you know.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your cousin Mark.””

I froze.

“Mark?””

The same cousin who stood in my dining room during the birthday party.

The same cousin who said nothing while Amy was in the kitchen.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother didn’t create this alone.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The silence.

The uncomfortable looks.

The people who knew.

“They were all involved.””

“Not all.””

“What do you mean?””

“Some relatives appear to have been told a different story.””

I looked at Amy.

“What story?””

“That your marriage was falling apart.””

Amy looked hurt.

“She told them that?””

“Yes.””

Daniel continued.

“She claimed you were overwhelmed. She claimed Amy was unstable after the baby.””

My hands tightened.

“She made herself the victim.””

“Exactly.””

I remembered my mother’s words at the party.

A woman who is financially supported should earn her place.

It wasn’t just an insult.

It was part of the story she was building.

A story where Amy was dependent.

Unstable.

Unable to care for our family.

And my mother was the only solution.

“What about Mark?””

Daniel answered.

“I’m still investigating.””

“Can we prove everything?””

“We can prove enough to start.””

I looked outside.

The neighborhood was quiet.

Normal.

But my life had changed.

“When?””

“Today.””

That afternoon, I met Mark at a coffee shop.

I didn’t tell Amy I was going.

Not because I wanted secrets.

Because I needed to know if Mark would tell the truth when he thought he had control.

He arrived twenty minutes late.

That was unusual.

Mark was always confident.

Always joking.

But today, he looked nervous.

“Connor.””

I didn’t shake his hand.

“Why?””

He stopped.

“What?””

“Why did you help my mother?””

His expression changed immediately.

So did his body language.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

I placed a copy of the property document on the table.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

“That’s your first question?””

He looked around.

“Connor, listen—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“But you’re going to listen.””

He sat down.

For the first time, I saw him as he really was.

Not the confident cousin.

Not the funny relative.

Someone who knew he had been caught.

“My mother used you.””

Mark looked away.

“She said she was protecting you.””

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“She was trying to take my house.””

Mark shook his head.

“That’s not what she told me.””

“What did she tell you?””

He hesitated.

“She said Amy was planning to leave.””

The words hit me.

Again.

The same lie.

“She said Amy was taking advantage of you.””

I stared at him.

“She convinced you of that?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“She showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“The medical ones.””

My blood ran cold.

“The fake ones?””

“I didn’t know they were fake.””

He rubbed his face.

“She said Amy had problems after the baby was born. She said she was trying to protect Frederick.””

I leaned closer.

“And the property company?””

Mark looked down.

“My business was struggling.””

There it was.

Money.

“She offered to invest.””

I nodded slowly.

“So she bought your help.””

Mark didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of her?””

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

“How?””

Mark looked at the table.

“You think Teresa only controls you because she’s your mother?””

I stayed quiet.

“She does it to everyone.””

He looked at me.

“She knows people’s weaknesses.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How long?””

Mark sighed.

“Since before Frederick was born.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

“Connor, your mother didn’t suddenly decide she wanted control.””

I waited.

“She planned this when Amy got pregnant.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Mark continued.

“She always said the same thing.””

“What?””

“That your child needed a stronger family structure.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted to replace Amy from the beginning.””

Mark nodded.

“She believed you would eventually understand.””

The words echoed.

My mother’s entire plan.

Every piece.

The money.

The documents.

The lies.

The custody paperwork.

All because she believed she had the right to own my life.

I stood up.

“Connor.””

I stopped.

Mark looked at me.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“My mother gave this to me.””

“Your mother?””

“My mom. Your aunt.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she knew Teresa went too far.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

My heart stopped.

“Teresa knows the DNA results were never supposed to be hidden.””

I looked up.

“What DNA results?””

Mark’s face changed.

And then he said the words that made the entire room disappear.

“Connor…”

He swallowed.

“Your mother has known something about Frederick since the day he was born.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“She has been using it to control Amy.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What are you saying?””

Mark looked at me.

“The secret your mother has been hiding isn’t about your wife.””

May you like

A pause.

“It’s about your son.””
