Chapter 9: The Mother I Never Knew
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people have nothing to say.
The kind that happens when everyone knows something impossible has just been revealed.
My mother.
The woman who tucked me into bed when I was sick.
The woman who held my hand when I received my first heartbreak.
The woman who cried with me when my grandfather died.
The woman I trusted more than anyone.
Marcus’s words hung in the air.
*Your grandfather feared your own mother.*
I stared at him.
Waiting for him to take it back.
Waiting for someone to laugh and say this had gone too far.
Nobody did.
“Say that again,” I whispered.
Marcus looked at me with sadness.
“Evelyn…”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“Say exactly what you meant.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Your grandfather believed your mother was connected to the people trying to control your inheritance.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“Connected?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Nobody answered.
I looked around the room.
At all the faces.
The people who had carried pieces of this truth while I lived in the dark.
“You all knew.””
Robert looked away.
That hurt.
More than I expected.
“You knew about my mother?””
Robert sighed.
“Not everything.””
“But something.””
He didn’t deny it.
I turned to Patricia.
“You knew.””
Her expression was complicated.
Not cruel.
Not satisfied.
Almost guilty.
“Yes.””
The word broke something inside me.
“You knew my mother was involved in this?””
Patricia shook her head.
“Not involved.””
“Then what?””
She looked at the letter.
“She was trying to fix what she helped create.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“It means your mother was not the villain your grandfather feared.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you say he feared her?””
“Because fear and hatred are not the same thing.””
I hated that answer.
Because it sounded like the kind of complicated truth everyone in this family loved hiding behind.
I wanted something simple.
Someone guilty.
Someone innocent.
But all I had found was a web of choices and regrets.
“Explain.””
Marcus nodded.
“Your mother was young when she met Daniel’s father.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“Before your mother married your father, she worked with your grandfather.””
“My mother never told me that.””
“Because she wanted to leave that world behind.””
Marcus continued.
“Your mother discovered that Adrian Vale was trying to manipulate your grandfather’s business.””
“Adrian again.””
“Yes.””
“She tried to warn him.””
“Your grandfather didn’t listen.””
I looked down.
The pattern was becoming clear.
Everyone thought they were protecting someone.
Everyone thought they were making the right choice.
And everyone created more damage.
“What happened next?””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Ethan discovered the same thing years later.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And Daniel?””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“Daniel was already involved.””
My eyes moved toward my husband.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
Not like the man who had stood over me at dinner.
Like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Tell me the truth.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was angry.””
The honesty surprised me.
“At who?””
“Everyone.””
He laughed quietly.
“My whole life, I was the second son.””
His eyes moved toward Ethan.
“He was smarter. More talented. More trusted.””
Ethan looked away.
“And then you came along.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Because suddenly I had access to something Ethan never had.””
“What?””
“You.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“I don’t understand.””
“Your grandfather trusted you.””
Silence.
“You were the only person who could legally unlock parts of the trust.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The truth I had been avoiding.
My grandfather didn’t just leave me wealth.
He left me power.
And power attracted people.
Daniel continued.
“At first, I convinced myself I loved you.””
My heart stopped.
“At first?””
He looked down.
“I did love you.””
The room stayed silent.
“But?””
He swallowed.
“But I also knew who you were.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Did you ever see me?””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Not my last name.””
My voice cracked.
“Not my family.””
“Not the trust.””
“Me.””
Daniel couldn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I turned away.
I refused to let him see me break again.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“There is something else.””
I wiped my face.
“What now?””
“The trust has one final condition.””
I looked at him.
“What condition?””
“If Daniel attempted to gain control through deception, ownership would transfer.””
“To who?””
Marcus hesitated.
I noticed.
“Marcus.””
“To the person your grandfather chose.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Ethan.
Everyone followed his gaze.
I stared at him.
“No.””
Ethan immediately shook his head.
“No.””
But Marcus continued.
“Ethan was named as the emergency protector of the estate.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Of course.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He laughed bitterly.
“Even after everything, he still chose Ethan.””
Ethan’s expression darkened.
“This was never about winning.””
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s easy for you to say.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Because I lost everything too.””
For a moment, the two brothers just stared at each other.
Two men carrying years of resentment.
Two men destroyed by the same family legacy.
Then Ethan looked at me.
“I never wanted your money.””
I believed him.
Maybe because he was the only person in the room who had nothing to gain from pretending.
“Then why come back?””
His answer was quiet.
“Because I found out Daniel wasn’t the only person trying to take control.””
Everyone became still.
Marcus frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out another document.
“I found this three months ago.””
He handed it to Marcus.
The attorney read it.
And his expression changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Marcus looked at me.
“This is a transfer request.””
“From who?””
He looked down.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
I grabbed the paper.
The signature was unmistakable.
My mother’s.
The date was recent.
After my grandfather died.
After I was already married.
“What did she transfer?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Control rights.””
My hands went cold.
“To who?””
The room held its breath.
Marcus looked at the final line.
Then he whispered:
“To Adrian Vale.””
A wave of disbelief passed through me.
“But Adrian is gone.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He’s not gone.””
The room froze.
Robert stepped forward.
“You know where he is?””
Ethan nodded.
“I found him.””
“When?””
“Two weeks ago.””
I stared at him.
“You knew where he was and said nothing?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I was trying to confirm something.””
“What?””
His expression was grim.
“That Adrian wasn’t working alone.””
I looked at the document.
My mother’s signature.
Adrian’s name.
The trust.
The house.
Everything.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Where is my mother now?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Marcus.
“Where is she?””
His face turned pale.
“Evelyn…”
“Where is she?””
Marcus looked down.
“She disappeared yesterday.””
The room went silent.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“After signing this?””
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
Not because she was gone.
Because suddenly I understood.
The person who knew the truth.
The person who could explain everything.
The person who could tell me whether she betrayed me or was protecting me.
Was missing.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in months.
A voice I never expected to hear tonight.
My mother.
“Evelyn.””
My eyes filled instantly.
“Mom?””
Everyone watched me.
Her voice trembled.
“Listen to me carefully.””
“Where are you?””
“No time.””
“Mom, what’s happening?””
A pause.
Then she whispered:
“Your grandfather’s biggest secret was never the trust.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What was it?””
Her voice became softer.
“The person you think betrayed you…”
A pause.
“…is the person who has been protecting you this entire time.””
I looked around the room.
At Daniel.
At Ethan.
At Marcus.
At Patricia.
“Who?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
Then she said:
“Evelyn, you need to get away from Marcus.””
My heart stopped.
Because Marcus was standing directly in front of me.
May you like
And at that exact moment…
the study door locked from the outside.
