Amused

Chapter 6: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much

The name on the document blurred in front of me.

Marcus Reed.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time, hoping the letters would rearrange themselves into something else.

They didn’t.

The man I had trusted.

The man my grandfather trusted.

The man who had been sitting across from me for four months, telling me he would help uncover Daniel’s deception.

His name was written on a contract connected to the very betrayal we were trying to expose.

“No,” I whispered.

The room remained silent.

Everyone was watching me.

Daniel.

Patricia.

Robert.

Ethan.

All of them knew something I didn’t.

I looked at Ethan.

“You’re wrong.””

He didn’t argue.

That almost made it worse.

“You want me to be wrong,” he said quietly.

I gripped the document.

“Marcus has spent years protecting my family’s trust.””

“Yes.””

“He managed everything after my grandfather died.””

“Yes.””

“He was the one person who helped me when I found the forged signatures.””

Ethan nodded.

“I know.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

His expression darkened.

“Because he was the one who told Daniel you were looking.””

The words hit me like another slap.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel looked away.

And I noticed.

That tiny movement.

That tiny moment of guilt.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t respond.

I walked toward him.

“Did you know?””

His jaw tightened.

“Evelyn—”

“Did you know Marcus was involved?””

He looked at me.

“I knew he wasn’t helping you for the reason you thought.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“Would you have believed me?””

I froze.

Because he was right.

Four hours earlier, I would have assumed it was another manipulation tactic.

I would have thought he was trying to destroy anyone who challenged him.

But now?

Now I didn’t know what was real anymore.

Ethan took the contract from my hand.

“This is only one piece.””

“How many pieces are there?””

“Enough.””

“Enough for what?””

“To prove Daniel wasn’t the person who started this.””

I looked at him.

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

That silence became the answer.

I looked at Patricia.

Her face was pale.

“Tell me.””

She looked away.

“Patricia.””

For years, I called her “Mom” because Daniel said she wanted that.

I stopped tonight.

Because she had never been my mother.

She had been someone protecting a secret.

Finally, she spoke.

“Your grandfather made enemies.””

I frowned.

“Everyone successful has enemies.””

“Not like this.””

She walked slowly toward the desk.

“Your grandfather built his empire by taking risks. Some people admired him. Others hated him.””

“And?””

“And one person wanted everything he had.””

“Who?””

Patricia looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Your grandfather’s business partner.””

I felt confused.

“My grandfather never had a business partner.””

“That’s what everyone believed.””

My eyes moved to the documents.

“How many secrets did my family have?””

Robert sighed.

“More than you know.””

I almost laughed.

“That seems to be the theme of this family.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody could deny it.

I walked toward the window.

The garden outside looked exactly the same as it had an hour ago.

The same trees.

The same stone path.

The same beautiful estate.

But I felt like I was seeing it for the first time.

A place built on hidden stories.

A marriage built on hidden stories.

A life built on hidden stories.

Ethan came closer.

“There’s something else.””

I didn’t turn around.

“What?””

“The folder Daniel kept in the study wasn’t just about transferring ownership.””

I looked back.

“What was it about?””

“Control.””

“Of what?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“You.””

The word chilled me.

“What?””

“Your grandfather didn’t create the trust only to protect money.””

I frowned.

“You said that before.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Your grandfather knew someone might try to marry into the family for access.””

The accusation hung between us.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You’re saying I married her for money.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I’m saying you knew exactly who she was before she knew who you were.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because that was the truth.

He did know.

I turned away.

I couldn’t watch them anymore.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Because I was afraid.””

I looked at him.

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would leave.””

I stared at him.

“You thought lying to me would make me stay?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I thought if you knew everything, you would never look at me the same way.””

A painful silence followed.

Because that was the first honest thing he had said.

But honesty after five years of lies didn’t feel like love.

It felt like damage control.

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another piece of paper.

“This is what you need to see.””

I hesitated.

Then took it.

The document was old.

Older than the others.

At the top was my grandfather’s name.

But underneath was another name.

A name I had never heard.

*Adrian Vale.*

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is Adrian Vale?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Patricia whispered:

“Your grandfather never told you.””

I looked at her.

“Clearly.””

Ethan pointed at the document.

“Adrian Vale was your grandfather’s closest friend.””

“Friend?””

“Yes.””

“Then why have I never heard of him?””

“Because after their partnership ended, your grandfather erased him from every public record.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“Because Adrian tried to take everything.””

I studied the document.

“What does he have to do with Daniel?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Robert said:

“Daniel worked for him.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at my husband.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

I stepped away.

“No more explanations that start with my name.””

He looked hurt.

Good.

I needed him to understand what this felt like.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then at his father.

Finally, he said:

“Adrian found me when I was twenty.””

“And?””

“He knew I hated living in Ethan’s shadow.””

Ethan’s expression remained emotionless.

“He promised me I would never be second.””

I felt sick.

“So he used you.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you let him.””

Another silence.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Maybe because it was the first time Daniel admitted his own choices.

Not blamed someone else.

Not explained.

Admitted.

“What did Adrian want?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Your grandfather’s legacy.””

I stared at him.

“And you?””

His voice was barely audible.

“I wanted to prove I was better than Ethan.””

The room went silent.

There it was.

The thing driving everything.

Not money.

Not the house.

Not even power.

A lifetime of jealousy.

Daniel had spent years trying to defeat a brother he thought had everything.

And I had been the doorway.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Adrian disappeared after your grandfather exposed him.””

“Where did he go?””

“Nobody knows.””

“But he’s involved now?””

Ethan nodded.

“How?””

“Because he’s the only person who benefits from all of this.””

I looked at the documents.

The forged signatures.

The transfers.

The hidden contracts.

Everything suddenly felt bigger.

Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.

He was a piece.

Marcus was possibly another piece.

And somewhere out there was the person moving them.

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen lit up.

The name appeared.

Marcus Reed.

My heart tightened.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked at me.

“Don’t answer.””

Daniel whispered:

“Evelyn, please.””

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

I stared at the screen.

The man who had promised to protect me.

The man whose name was on a betrayal document.

The man who might know every secret my family had buried.

Finally, I answered.

“Marcus.””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then his voice came through.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost too calm.

“Evelyn.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“I know you found the folder.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Because I’m the one who put it there.””

Everyone in the room heard.

Daniel looked shocked.

Ethan’s expression changed.

And I realized something.

The person I thought was helping me uncover the truth…

Had been waiting for me to find it all along.

Marcus spoke again.

“But before you judge me, Evelyn, there’s something you need to know.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

His answer was quiet.

And terrifying.

“The documents you found were not evidence of Daniel’s betrayal.””

May you like

A pause.

“They were evidence that your grandfather betrayed you first.””
