Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Replace Me
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.
Vanessa Reed.
My husband's mistress was listed on a document that claimed she could take control of my daughter's medical decisions.
I stared at the handwritten note beneath my forged signature.
Once Claire is removed from the process, no one can stop us.
The handwriting was Daniel's. I recognized the narrow letters, the sharp downward stroke of his capital C, and the way he always crossed his t's too high.
He used to leave notes like that in my lunch bag when we were newly married.
Don't forget your umbrella, sweetheart.
Pick up milk on the way home.
Love you. See you tonight.
I had kept some of those notes in a kitchen drawer for years.
Now I wished I'd thrown every one of them away.
"That isn't my signature," I said.
Marissa Cole closed the laptop halfway.
"I believe you, Claire. But we need to establish how this document entered the system and whether it was ever legally executed.""
"Vanessa can't become Lily's mother because Daniel writes her name on a piece of paper.""
"No. And this document alone does not establish legal custody. But someone appears to have used it to alter your daughter's medical records.""
Dr. Bennett approached from Lily's bedside.
"How could a pharmacist submit a custody document?""
"Daniel has administrative access to several network systems," Marissa replied.
"That doesn't mean he has legal authority to make custody decisions. It means someone failed to prevent an unauthorized document from being attached to a medical record.""
"Then find out who approved it," I said.
Marissa nodded toward the technician.
"Start with the verification trail. I want every account that accessed this file, every approval, and every linked document.""
The technician began typing.
I looked at Lily.
Her face was pale against the white pillow. A tiny bandage covered the spot where a nurse had drawn blood from her arm. Mr. Buttons sat beside her shoulder, one floppy ear tucked beneath the blanket.
I remembered buying that rabbit at a roadside gift shop during our first family vacation. Lily had been three and terrified of the hotel elevator. Daniel had carried her in his arms, making ridiculous rabbit noises until she giggled.
Back then, he had looked at our daughter as if she were the greatest thing he'd ever seen.
What had happened to that man?
Or had I simply never known him?
"Claire?""
I turned.
Dr. Bennett was watching me.
"We need to focus on the immediate problem," he said gently.
"The courier is on the way with the medication. Until it arrives, we'll continue supporting Lily's vital functions.""
"Will the dose still work?""
"It can. I can't promise an outcome, but we're doing everything medically appropriate to keep her stable.""
I nodded, forcing myself to breathe.
Then the door opened.
A security officer stepped inside.
"Ms. Cole, Mr. Carter is insisting on speaking to his wife. He's accompanied by an attorney.""
My stomach tightened.
"Tell him I won't speak to him.""
The officer hesitated.
"He says the matter concerns his daughter's welfare.""
I looked at Lily's motionless face.
"His daughter's welfare? He gave her medicine to his mistress.""
Dr. Bennett's expression hardened.
"Tell Mr. Carter that all communication regarding this patient's treatment must go through the clinical team. He is not authorized to interfere with care.""
The officer left.
Less than a minute later, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I almost rejected the call.
Then I remembered the note.
Once Claire is removed from the process, no one can stop us.
I answered and put the phone on speaker.
"What do you want?""
"Claire, this has gone far enough.""
His voice was smooth again, the voice he used when he wanted to sound reasonable.
"Your access to the records has been compromised. I can help you understand what's happening if you'll stop making accusations.""
"You forged my signature.""
A pause.
"What?""
"You filed a document giving Vanessa control over Lily's medical decisions.""
"That's not what the document says.""
"Then explain the note you wrote beneath it.""
Silence.
For the first time that night, Daniel didn't immediately have an answer.
Then he said, "You weren't supposed to see that.""
The room went completely still.
I gripped my phone.
"What did you say?""
He exhaled.
"I meant the document was confidential.""
"No. You said I wasn't supposed to see it.""
"Claire, you're twisting my words.""
"Why is Vanessa listed as Lily's medical decision-maker?""
"Because you have demonstrated that you can't make rational decisions under pressure.""
I stared at the phone.
"My daughter is dying. I'm frightened. That's not the same as being irrational.""
"You've been unstable for months.""
"Because you've been having an affair!""
"Lower your voice.""
I actually laughed.
He was still trying to control me.
Even now.
"Did you forge my signature, Daniel?""
"I did what was necessary to protect Lily.""
"From what?""
"From you.""
The words landed harder than a slap.
I looked toward Dr. Bennett. He stood beside the bed, listening with a grim expression.
"Tell me what I did that justified removing me from my own daughter's medical decisions.""
"You questioned the treatment plan. You challenged the doctors. You made threats.""
"I did none of those things.""
"You don't remember what you say when you're emotional.""
"Then why did you need to forge my signature?""
His voice sharpened.
"Because you wouldn't cooperate.""
"Cooperate with what?""
He said nothing.
I leaned closer to the phone.
"Daniel, what were you planning to do with our daughter?""
"Don't ask questions you don't understand.""
"Was Vanessa going to become her guardian?""
"Vanessa is more capable of handling Lily's situation than you are.""
My stomach twisted.
"She barely knows our daughter.""
"She knows what matters.""
"What matters? She received Lily's medication!""
"Vanessa has a legitimate medical need.""
"And Lily doesn't?""
"Claire, I'm warning you. If you continue this, you'll destroy your own life.""
I looked at the forged documents on the screen.
"You've already tried to destroy mine.""
He lowered his voice.
"You think these people are your friends? They're protecting the hospital. The moment this becomes public, they'll protect themselves. They'll say you were confused, that you misunderstood the medication order, that you made an emotional accusation.""
"Is that what you're planning to say?""
"It's what happened.""
"No. It's what you want everyone to believe.""
I heard a muffled voice on his end.
A woman's voice.
"Daniel, is that her?""
Vanessa.
My hands began to shake.
Daniel moved away from the phone, but not far enough.
"Not now," he muttered.
"Did you tell her about the documents?"" Vanessa asked.
"Stop talking.""
"She already knows, doesn't she?""
I felt cold all over.
"Vanessa," I said loudly, "why did you agree to take my daughter's medication?""
There was a pause.
Then she answered with astonishing calm.
"Because Daniel told me it was legally reassigned.""
"You knew she needed it to survive.""
"I was told the hospital had other options.""
"Dr. Bennett said she could die without it.""
"That's not my responsibility.""
I shut my eyes.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding. Not a desperate mistake.
A choice.
"She's eight years old," I whispered.
"And I'm thirty-two," Vanessa replied.
"I have a life, Claire. I have a career. I have a future.""
The same words Daniel had used.
They had rehearsed their justification so thoroughly that they sounded like two people reading from the same script.
"Did you know he was trying to make you her guardian?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you sign anything?""
"Daniel handled the paperwork.""
"Did you agree to take my daughter away from me?""
"Don't make this ugly.""
I stared at the phone in disbelief.
"You're sleeping with my husband, you took our daughter's medication, and you're listed on forged custody documents. How much uglier can this get?""
Daniel suddenly returned to the call.
"Enough. We're finished talking.""
"No," I said.
"We're just getting started.""
He hung up.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the technician cleared his throat.
"Ms. Cole, I found the account that uploaded the custody document.""
Marissa moved to his desk.
"Whose account?""
He turned the screen toward her.
"It was submitted using Daniel Carter's administrator credentials. But the electronic approval came from a separate account.""
"Whose?""
The technician zoomed in.
Marissa read the name.
Her expression changed.
"That's impossible.""
Dr. Bennett stepped closer.
"What is it?""
Marissa looked at me.
"The approval came from someone in the network's legal department.""
She pointed to the screen.
"Someone with authority to certify that the document had been reviewed.""
Beneath the approval was a digital signature.
*Evelyn Shaw — Chief Legal Counsel, Westbridge Medical Network.*
I had never met Evelyn Shaw.
But Marissa apparently had.
"She approved this?"" Dr. Bennett asked.
"The audit record says she did.""
"Then call her.""
Marissa picked up her phone.
Before she could dial, the technician spoke again.
"There's another linked file. It was submitted with the custody document.""
He opened it.
The heading read:
*PROPOSED BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT — CARTER FAMILY TRUST.*
Marissa began reading, then stopped.
"What is this?"" I asked.
She looked at me with an expression I couldn't interpret.
"Claire, does your family have a trust?""
"My parents left Lily a small inheritance when she was born. Daniel manages the account because he handles our investments.""
"How much is in it?""
"About two million dollars. My parents sold their business before they died. They wanted Lily to have enough for college, medical expenses, and a secure future.""
Marissa slowly turned back to the document.
"Then you need to see this.""
A paragraph near the bottom named the proposed new beneficiary.
Vanessa Reed.
And the person authorized to execute the transfer?
Daniel Carter.
I felt the room tilt.
My husband hadn't merely redirected medicine.
He had been preparing to transfer my daughter's inheritance to his mistress.
And the forged custody document was dated three weeks before Lily ever entered the ICU.
I stared at the screen, understanding something that made my blood run cold.
Daniel hadn't started planning this because Lily was sick.
He had planned it before we knew how sick she was.
Then why had he been in such a hurry to remove our daughter from the system?
The technician scrolled to the final page.
A note appeared beneath the proposed transfer date.
*Execution contingent upon confirmation of medical incapacity and removal of maternal authority.*
I covered my mouth.
Lily's illness had not created Daniel's plan.
May you like
It had given him an opportunity to carry it out.
And somewhere downstairs, my husband was still telling people he was trying to protect his daughter.
