Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Lie

The signature stared back at me.

*Eleanor Whitmore.*

My mind refused to accept it.

Not because it was impossible.

Because it was possible enough to hurt.

The person who had stood beside my family for decades.

The person who had protected my grandfather’s legacy.

The person who had guided me through every difficult moment after his death.

Her name was now sitting beneath a message accusing her of helping destroy my mother.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

For once, he looked as confused as I felt.

I slowly turned toward Eleanor.

She did not move.

She did not defend herself.

That scared me more than anything.

“Say something.””

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

Eleanor looked at the paper on the security officer’s tablet.

Then at me.

“Claire.””

“Say it isn’t true.””

A painful silence.

Then:

“It isn’t true.””

The answer came quickly.

But not quickly enough.

Because I saw the hesitation before it.

And that hesitation broke something inside me.

“Why did you pause?””

She looked away.

“Because I knew this moment would come.””

“What moment?””

“The moment when you discovered that protecting you and telling you everything were not always the same thing.””

I stared at her.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She took a breath.

“But it’s the truth.””

The board members watched quietly.

Everyone in that room was waiting.

Waiting to see if Eleanor was the villain.

Waiting to see if another secret would fall apart.

Michael stepped forward.

“Claire, you need to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“You knew too?””

“No.””

His expression was serious.

“But Arthur trusted Eleanor.””

“So?””

“So if she wanted to harm your family, she had opportunities for years.””

I looked at him.

“That doesn’t prove anything.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“It doesn’t.””

I appreciated that.

For the first time tonight, someone wasn’t trying to force me into believing a story.

They were letting me see the facts.

Eleanor slowly walked toward the table.

“I want to explain.””

I folded my arms.

“Then explain.””

She opened her briefcase.

But instead of pulling out documents, she removed a small wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

My grandfather’s.

He kept one like it in his study.

“What is that?””

Eleanor placed it on the table.

“Arthur gave this to me the day before he died.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he knew the truth would eventually surface.””

She opened the box.

Inside was a key.

An old photograph.

And a handwritten letter.

She handed me the letter.

I hesitated.

Then took it.

The handwriting was familiar.

My grandfather.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then someone has finally forced you to ask the questions I hoped you would never need to ask.

I looked up.

My eyes burned.

Eleanor watched silently.

I continued reading.

There are people who will tell you Eleanor hid the truth from you.

That is correct.

But they will not tell you why.

I stopped.

The room disappeared again.

Because my grandfather was answering the accusation before it happened.

I continued.

Eleanor’s greatest mistake was believing she could protect everyone by carrying every burden herself.

She was wrong.

But her heart was always in the right place.

I lowered the letter.

“She didn’t do it.””

My voice was quiet.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Not from relief.

From pain.

I looked down.

Your mother’s death was not caused by Eleanor.

But the person responsible wanted you to believe it was.

Because Eleanor was the one person standing between them and Harlow Capital.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Eleanor answered.

“Because I knew where the evidence was.””

I turned the page.

My grandfather continued.

The person who attacked your mother did not fear your family’s wealth.

They feared what your mother discovered.

She found proof that someone inside Harlow Capital had been manipulating ownership records.

Ownership records.

My eyes widened.

I looked at Robert.

Then Michael.

Then Eleanor.

The same thing.

The same pattern.

Control.

Access.

Power.

My grandfather’s final line was short.

The enemy was never outside the company.

The enemy was someone who believed Harlow belonged to them.

I looked up.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Maybe we should stop pretending this isn’t obvious.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stood slowly.

His face was exhausted.

Broken.

But focused.

“My father.””

Michael looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I spent my entire life believing my father was a victim.””

He looked at the photograph of my mother.

“But every secret points back to him.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I defended a man I didn’t know.””

Nobody spoke.

I had never seen Daniel like this.

Not because I forgave him.

I didn’t.

But because for the first time, he wasn’t performing.

He wasn’t trying to win.

He was simply realizing the truth.

Eleanor looked at Daniel.

“There is still one question.””

“What?””

“Why did someone forge those divorce documents?””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that have to do with my father?””

Eleanor looked at the table.

“The same person who wants Claire’s trust may also want control of Mercer Global.””

Robert suddenly stood.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

His expression had changed.

“I know where they are.””

The room froze.

“Where who are?””

Robert looked at me.

“The person behind this.””

My heart stopped.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer immediately.

Then he walked toward his briefcase.

“I should have told Arthur.””

The guilt in his voice was obvious.

“I should have stopped it earlier.””

He removed a document.

“This was discovered after your mother’s investigation.””

Eleanor took it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then widened.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“This is a transfer agreement.””

“Between who?””

She handed it to me.

I read the names.

Then froze.

Because the agreement was between:

*Mercer Holdings.*

And:

*Harlow Capital.*

But the date was impossible.

It was signed after my grandfather had already died.

“That can’t be real.””

Robert nodded.

“That’s why we hid it.””

I looked at him.

“Who signed it?””

His face became pale.

“Your husband.””

I turned.

Daniel looked stunned.

“What?””

Robert pointed to the signature.

“Daniel Mercer.””

Daniel grabbed the document.

“That’s not mine.””

Again.

The same words.

The same defense.

But this time, I noticed something.

Daniel wasn’t looking at the signature.

He was looking at the date.

His face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“My father’s handwriting.””

Silence.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“The signature is mine.””

Everyone froze.

“But the handwriting around it…”

He swallowed.

“That’s my father’s.””

Michael moved closer.

Let me see.

Daniel handed him the document.

Michael stared.

Then slowly sat down.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No, that’s impossible.””

“What?””

Michael looked at his son.

“Your father died before this agreement was created.””

I looked at the paper.

Then at Michael.

“Then how could he write it?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was only one possibility.

A possibility none of us wanted to say.

Someone had been using Michael Mercer’s identity.

Someone had access to old records.

Someone had been planning this for years.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Claire.””

I froze.

The voice was familiar.

Too familiar.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

My blood turned cold.

“Understand what?””

“That Daniel was never the real threat.””

I looked around the room.

At everyone.

The voice continued.

“He was just the easiest person to manipulate.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The person laughed softly.

Then said:

“The same person who has been protecting you your entire life.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Claire?””

I looked up.

My face must have revealed something.

Because everyone became silent.

“What did they say?””

I swallowed.

Then answered:

“They said Daniel wasn’t the real threat.””

A pause.

“They said the person behind everything has been protecting me my entire life.””

No one moved.

Then the lights in the boardroom flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The security system alarm began ringing.

The assistant ran in.

“Chairman!””

Robert turned.

“What happened?””

The assistant looked terrified.

“The archive room.””

“What about it?””

He swallowed.

“The person who accessed the files left another message.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

The assistant looked directly at me.

“On your mother’s original investigation report.””

I stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

He looked down.

Then whispered:

“It says…”

He hesitated.

“…the person who ordered the attack was not Michael Mercer.””

The room went silent.

“Then who?””

The assistant looked at the paper.

May you like

And answered:

“Arthur Harlow.””
