Amused

Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside His Empire

I stared at the name on the document until my eyes refused to focus.

The café noise disappeared.

The sound of coffee machines.

The conversations around me.

The cars passing outside.

Everything faded.

Because the name written on that page was impossible.

*Ethan Cole.*

Nathan’s oldest friend.

His business partner.

The man who had stood beside him when Brooks Innovations was nothing more than an idea written on a whiteboard.

The man who gave the first speech at Nathan’s company anniversary.

The man Nathan once called “the brother I chose.””

I looked at Rachel.

“You’re saying Ethan is behind this?””

Rachel swallowed.

“I’m saying Ethan knows more than Nathan admits.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

She looked down at her hands.

“But it’s close.””

I studied her carefully.

Rachel seemed afraid.

Not nervous.

Afraid.

There was a difference.

Nervous people worried about consequences.

Afraid people worried about what someone might do to them.

“How long have you known?”” I asked.

“Months.””

“Months?””

She nodded.

“I should have told someone sooner.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Because I was scared.””

I looked at the documents again.

“Of Nathan?””

She hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“Of both of them.””

That sentence made my chest tighten.

“Tell me everything.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“When I became Nathan’s assistant, I thought I was lucky.””

She gave a small, bitter smile.

“He was successful. Charming. Everyone wanted to work with him.””

I didn't say anything.

Because I remembered that version of Nathan.

Everyone did.

The brilliant entrepreneur.

The man who walked into a room and made people believe anything was possible.

“He always talked about you,” Rachel continued.

My eyebrows lifted.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“What did he say?””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Not what you think.””

I waited.

“He said you were the reason he had opportunities.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because once, that would have made me happy.

“He knew?””

Rachel nodded.

“He knew about your family before you think he did.””

The room seemed colder.

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Sophia, Nathan found out who your father was before he proposed.””

I sat completely still.

“No.””

“I saw the emails.””

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“I told him after we got engaged.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

Three years ago, I had believed I was giving Nathan a choice.

I thought I was waiting to see if he loved me before knowing my name.

But maybe I had never given him that choice.

Maybe he had known all along.

Maybe every sweet word.

Every promise.

Every kiss.

Had been built on information I thought I had hidden.

“Do you have proof?””

Rachel opened another folder.

“I kept copies.””

She placed printed emails on the table.

I picked up the first page.

The sender was Nathan.

The recipient was Ethan.

The date was two months before our engagement.

My hands became cold as I read.

*She doesn't know we found out yet.*

I stopped breathing.

The next line.

*Her father’s network could change everything.*

I turned the page.

*Don't rush this. Trust matters. If you move too fast, she may suspect something.*

My vision blurred.

I placed the paper down.

I didn't cry.

Not this time.

The tears had already run out.

“What else?””

Rachel looked at me sadly.

“Sophia…”

“What else?””

She slowly pushed another document toward me.

“This is from six months ago.””

I looked down.

A company report.

A financial projection.

And at the top:

*Whitmore Asset Transfer Strategy.*

My fingers tightened.

“They were planning this for six months?””

Rachel nodded.

“Maybe longer.””

I stood suddenly.

The chair moved loudly against the floor.

People turned to look.

I didn't care.

Nathan.

Ethan.

Madison.

They hadn't just betrayed me.

They had studied me.

They had calculated me.

I had been living inside a plan.

“Sophia,” Rachel said quietly.

I looked at her.

“Why are you helping me?””

The question had been sitting in my mind since she arrived.

People rarely risked themselves without a reason.

Rachel looked out the window.

“Because I know what Nathan is capable of.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

She was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“Because I was there the night he decided to destroy you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Rachel’s face tightened.

“I overheard a conversation.””

“Between who?””

“Nathan and Ethan.””

“When?””

“The night after your anniversary dinner.””

I remembered that night.

Our third anniversary.

Nathan had canceled our dinner because of a “business emergency.””

I had spent the evening alone.

Waiting.

Crying.

Thinking I was being unreasonable for wanting time with my husband.

“What did they say?””

Rachel looked down.

“At first, I didn't understand.””

She took a breath.

“Nathan said he was tired of pretending.””

Pretending.

The word cut deeper than any insult.

“What else?””

Rachel swallowed.

“He said you were becoming a problem.””

I closed my eyes.

“And Ethan?””

“He told Nathan not to worry.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because they had a solution.””

The air left my lungs.

“What solution?””

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

“They wanted to make you look unstable.””

My father’s words came back.

The documents.

The doctors.

The plan.

I felt sick.

“They wanted people to believe I was crazy.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if they could prove you were unable to manage your own assets, your father’s inheritance would become easier to control.””

I stared at her.

“My inheritance?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“My inheritance is protected.””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“Not completely.””

“What does that mean?””

She reached into the folder.

She pulled out another page.

“This.””

I read it.

And my heart stopped.

A legal clause.

A hidden condition.

Something my father had included years ago.

My inheritance was protected unless I voluntarily transferred control or was legally declared unable to manage it.

The room spun.

“They found the weakness,” I whispered.

Rachel nodded.

“That was the plan.””

I sat back down.

For the first time, I understood the entire picture.

The affair.

The insults.

The humiliation.

The contract.

They weren't random.

They were steps.

Nathan and Ethan had been creating a story.

A story where I was emotional.

Difficult.

Unstable.

A woman who couldn't be trusted with power.

And Madison?

She wasn't just an affair.

She was a character in their story.

Someone who helped make me look unreasonable.

Someone who could tell people:

“Sophia was always jealous.””

“Sophia was always dramatic.””

“Sophia couldn't handle Nathan’s success.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Where is Nathan now?””

She checked her phone.

“Probably at the office.””

“After the board meeting?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Because Ethan convinced him he could fix everything.””

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Even now, Nathan was still trusting the person who destroyed him.

I gathered the documents.

“I need to see him.””

Rachel looked concerned.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Sophia, if he knows you have these—”

“He already knows my father is involved.””

I stood.

“But he doesn't know I know the truth.””

Rachel watched me.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the papers in my hand.

Three years ago, I would have gone to Nathan hoping for an explanation.

Today, I was going for answers.

“There is something I need to ask him.””

“What?””

I looked toward the café door.

“The question I should have asked three years ago.””

I walked outside.

The sunlight hit my face.

For the first time in days, I felt something other than pain.

Clarity.

Nathan had spent years believing I was a woman he could control.

He was wrong.

But as I drove toward Brooks Innovations headquarters, I had no idea that Nathan was already waiting for me.

And he wasn't alone.

Because when I entered the building lobby, the first person I saw standing beside him was Ethan Cole.

The man whose name was on the documents.

The man who had been hiding behind Nathan’s shadow.

He smiled when he saw me.

Not nervously.

Not fearfully.

Confidently.

“Sophia,” Ethan said.

I stopped.

“It's been a long time.””

I stared at the man who had helped destroy my marriage.

Then I noticed something.

He wasn't surprised to see me.

He was expecting me.

May you like

And before I could say anything, Ethan looked at Nathan and said:

“She finally knows, doesn't she?””
