Amused

Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Fortune

The next morning, my name was everywhere.

Not because I wanted it to be.

Not because I had planned some public revenge.

But because Nathan Brooks had spent years building his empire on a story that was never completely true.

And now, the truth was beginning to replace it.

I woke up before sunrise.

For a few seconds, I forgot everything.

The room was dark.

The house was quiet.

The world felt normal.

Then I moved.

Pain reminded me.

Everything came back.

The living room.

The betrayal.

The document.

The call.

Nathan’s face when he realized who I really was.

I sat up slowly and looked out the window.

The Beverly Hills skyline was beautiful.

That was the cruel thing about beautiful places.

They could hide ugly moments.

My phone buzzed.

I expected my father.

Instead, it was a message from an unknown number.

*You need to know what Nathan did before you decide his fate.*

My eyebrows tightened.

Another message appeared.

*Meet me at 10 a.m. The old café on Wilshire. Come alone.*

I stared at the screen.

A part of me wanted to ignore it.

Another part knew I couldn't.

Because whoever sent it knew something.

Something about Nathan.

I got dressed quietly.

For the first time in three years, I didn't choose clothes based on what Nathan liked.

I wore a simple black suit.

No jewelry.

No designer labels.

No attempt to impress anyone.

Just me.

When I walked downstairs, I expected the house to be empty.

It wasn't.

Nathan was sitting in the dining room.

He looked exhausted.

Not the polished CEO who appeared on magazine covers.

Not the confident businessman who shook hands with investors.

Just a man who had spent the night realizing he had lost control.

He looked up when he saw me.

“Sophia.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He stood slowly.

“I need to talk to you.””

I almost smiled.

Three years.

Three years of me asking for conversations.

Now he wanted one.

“I have somewhere to be.””

“Please.””

That word again.

It sounded strange coming from him.

I grabbed my bag.

“Nathan, we already talked.””

“No, we didn't.””

I looked at him.

“You told me what you wanted.””

His expression changed.

“I was angry.””

“You were cruel.””

“I know.””

The answer surprised me.

For once, he didn't defend himself.

“I know.””

The room became quiet.

Nathan looked older.

Maybe guilt did that.

Maybe losing power did.

“I don't know how to fix this.””

I stared at him.

“You can't.””

His face fell.

“Sophia—”

“You don't get to hurt someone and then ask them how to make you feel better about it.””

He looked down.

“I was wrong.””

The words were so simple.

So late.

I hated that part of me still wanted to believe them.

But forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

And love was not the same as trust.

“I need to know something,” I said.

He looked up.

“What?””

“The contract.””

His face tightened.

“I didn't create that.””

I studied him.

“Did you know about it?””

Silence.

A few seconds.

Too long.

“Nathan.””

He looked away.

That was my answer.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

“I knew my lawyer was preparing documents.””

“What documents?””

He didn't respond.

“Answer me.””

He ran a hand over his face.

“It was supposed to protect me.””

I felt something inside me break again.

“Protect you from what?””

“From losing everything.””

I stared at him.

“You mean losing access to my family’s money.””

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

He had no answer.

Because there wasn't one that made him innocent.

“I thought you were going to leave me,” he finally said.

I laughed softly.

Not happily.

“You thought I would leave you?””

“Yes.””

“After three years of supporting you?””

His jaw tightened.

“You never told me the truth about your family.””

I looked at him.

“And you never told me about Madison.””

That ended the argument.

Because there was no defense.

Only silence.

My phone buzzed again.

My father.

I looked at the message.

*The meeting has started. The board knows everything.*

My stomach tightened.

Nathan saw my expression.

“What happened?””

I didn't answer.

He stepped closer.

“Sophia.””

I looked at him.

“The truth is finally catching up.””

His face changed.

Then my phone rang.

I answered.

“Dad?””

My father's voice was calm.

“Are you alone?””

I looked at Nathan.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

I walked toward the hallway.

“What happened?””

“We found something.””

My heart slowed.

“What?””

“Evidence that Nathan wasn't only planning to take your inheritance.””

I gripped the phone.

“What else?””

My father paused.

“He was planning to make you appear mentally unstable.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“He contacted doctors.””

I couldn't speak.

“He was preparing documents suggesting you were unable to manage your own assets.””

My hand covered my mouth.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Because that was worse than stealing.

He wasn't trying to take my money.

He was trying to take my voice.

My identity.

My ability to defend myself.

“Dad…”

“I know.””

His voice softened.

“I’m sorry I didn't see it sooner.””

I closed my eyes.

My father blamed himself.

But I knew the truth.

Nathan had been careful.

He had built everything slowly.

A comment here.

A rumor there.

Making people think I was emotional.

Difficult.

Dependent.

He wasn't just trying to leave me.

He was trying to erase me.

“Who helped him?”” I asked.

Silence.

Then my father answered.

“That is what we are finding out.””

I looked back toward Nathan.

He was standing in the dining room.

Watching me.

Not knowing.

Not yet.

“Dad, I have to go.””

“Sophia.””

“Yes?””

“Be careful.””

“I will.””

“And Sophia?””

“Yes?””

“Whatever happens next, don't let anger become the thing that controls you.””

I nodded.

Even though he couldn't see me.

“I won't.””

After the call ended, I left the house.

Nathan didn't stop me.

Maybe he finally understood he had no right.

The café was quiet when I arrived.

A small place I had visited years ago.

Before Nathan.

Before the mansion.

Before everything became complicated.

I sat near the window.

Five minutes later, a woman walked in.

I recognized her immediately.

Not because I knew her personally.

Because I had seen her name before.

Rachel Morgan.

Nathan’s former assistant.

She looked nervous.

“Sophia Whitmore?””

I nodded.

“Rachel?””

She sat down.

“I wasn't sure you'd come.””

“Why did you contact me?””

She looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“Because I think Nathan is going to destroy himself.””

I didn't respond.

Rachel opened her bag.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I worked for Nathan for two years.””

“I know.””

She looked surprised.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“Then you know I left suddenly.””

“Yes.””

“Everyone thought I quit.””

“But you were fired.””

Her face changed.

“How did you know?””

“Because Nathan told people you made mistakes.””

Rachel looked down.

“He lied.””

I said nothing.

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Bank records.

Meeting notes.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A payment record.

From Nathan.

To Madison.

But not for gifts.

Not for clothes.

Not for luxury.

A much larger amount.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Rachel took a breath.

“This is why I came to you.””

I looked at the number.

A transfer.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Why was Nathan paying her?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Because Madison wasn't just his mistress.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What was she?””

Rachel looked directly into my eyes.

“She was working for someone else.””

The café suddenly felt colder.

“Who?””

Rachel pushed another document across the table.

A name was written at the top.

A name I recognized.

A name that made my entire body freeze.

Because it belonged to someone Nathan trusted.

Someone who had been inside his company from the beginning.

Rachel leaned closer.

“Sophia…”

“Yes?””

“You need to understand something.””

Her voice dropped.

“Nathan didn't start this plan alone.””

I stared at the name on the page.

And for the first time since everything collapsed, I felt something stronger than pain.

I felt fear.

Because if Rachel was telling the truth…

May you like

Then Nathan Brooks was not the mastermind.

He was only a piece of someone else’s game.
