Chapter 3: The Family She Wanted to Erase

Nobody spoke.
I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Outside, a car door slammed.
Somewhere in the neighborhood, a dog barked.
But inside my house, every person seemed frozen.
I looked at Noah.
"What do you mean, buddy?""
He twisted the blue lunchbox handle.
"Mommy says Lily isn't really part of our family.""
Vanessa took a step forward.
"Noah, stop.""
Officer Bennett raised a hand.
"Please let him finish.""
Noah's lower lip trembled.
"She says Lily has her own mommy somewhere else, so she shouldn't get the same things we get.""
I felt something break inside my chest.
I had never hidden Lily's biological mother from her.
Her name was Claire.
She had died when Lily was two, following complications from an illness that had progressed much faster than anyone expected.
I had spent the following year learning how to be both parents.
I learned how to braid hair from online videos.
I learned which bedtime stories Lily liked.
I learned how to remove glitter from the carpet and how to make pancakes shaped like animals.
And when Vanessa entered our lives, I believed I had found someone who could help us build a new family.
She had been kind to Lily at first.
She bought her dresses.
She took her to playgrounds.
She kissed her forehead in front of me.
She even cried during the wedding when Lily carried a small basket of flowers down the aisle.
I remembered Vanessa kneeling beside her afterward.
"You know what, sweetheart? You have another mommy now.""
Lily had smiled.
I had smiled too.
I was an idiot.
"Did Mommy say anything else?"" I asked Noah.
He nodded.
"She says Lily takes up too much space.""
Vanessa pressed her hands against her temples.
"That's enough. He's repeating things without understanding them.""
Noah looked at her.
"I understand.""
His voice was small, but there was something firm beneath it.
"Last week, Mommy said Daddy only loves Lily because he feels sorry for her.""
I closed my eyes.
Officer Bennett asked Noah whether he could explain when that conversation happened.
He nodded.
"At night. When Daddy was at work.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why would you say that?""
She shook her head.
"I never said that.""
Noah immediately answered.
"Yes, you did.""
"You're confused.""
"You said Lily makes Daddy sad because her real mommy died.""
Rachel's face twisted with anger.
I felt my hands curl into fists.
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
"Mr. Hale, I need you to remain calm.""
I nodded.
I wasn't going to give Vanessa another excuse to make herself the victim.
Instead, I sat beside Lily.
She was watching me.
"Sweetheart, do you know what Noah is talking about?""
She nodded.
"Mommy says I'm not a real sister.""
I swallowed.
"To Noah?""
She nodded again.
"She says I'm just Daddy's little girl.""
I brushed her hair away from her forehead.
"Listen to me. You are Noah's sister if he loves you and you love him. And you're my daughter. Nothing can change that.""
Lily looked down.
"Even if I eat his cake?""
I almost couldn't breathe.
"Even if you eat every cake in this house.""
She gave a tiny smile.
Rachel wrapped an arm around her.
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
It was loud and immediate.
"Marcus, you're destroying my family!""
I stood.
"Your family?""
"Yes! My son is terrified. You're letting him say whatever he wants. You're turning him against me!""
Noah took a step backward.
Officer Bennett noticed.
"Ma'am, please lower your voice.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I have raised these children every single day while Marcus worked!""
I looked at her.
"Apparently, you didn't raise Lily. You punished her.""
"I fed her!""
"Where?""
"She had food!""
"Where?""
She pointed toward the kitchen.
"There's food everywhere!""
I stared at her.
"Then why was she searching through the garbage?""
Vanessa looked away.
"She wanted attention.""
I stepped closer.
"She wanted pizza.""
The sentence landed heavily.
Rachel lowered her eyes.
One of the officers looked toward the floor.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"You're acting like I deliberately hurt her.""
I didn't answer.
Because I had begun to understand that she might have.
Officer Bennett informed us that the children would need to be examined and that the authorities would continue investigating.
She also advised me not to confront Vanessa further.
I agreed.
Then I asked Rachel to take Lily upstairs to get a few clothes and her favorite stuffed animal.
Rachel nodded.
"Come on, sweetheart. Let's get your bunny.""
Lily hesitated.
"Can I take the cake?""
Rachel smiled sadly.
"Of course.""
Lily looked at me.
"All of it?""
I managed a smile.
"All of it.""
Rachel carried her upstairs.
I remained downstairs with the officers.
Vanessa sat on the sofa, crying into a tissue.
For a few minutes, nobody spoke.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
I noticed the name.
MOTHER.
Vanessa stood and walked toward the kitchen.
Officer Bennett followed her.
"Ma'am, please stay where we can speak with you.""
Vanessa answered anyway.
"Mom, I need you.""
Her voice was suddenly sweet.
I heard the woman on the other end asking questions.
Vanessa glanced toward me.
"Marcus is having some kind of episode. He's threatening to take Noah away.""
I stared at her.
She continued.
"He's making Lily say terrible things about me.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
Officer Bennett held out her hand.
"Ma'am, please end the call.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Mom, I need you to come over. I can't deal with this alone.""
Finally, she ended the call.
Officer Bennett looked at her.
"You need to understand that interfering with the children's interviews or attempting to coordinate statements with witnesses could complicate this investigation.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You're treating me like a criminal.""
"We're investigating allegations of child neglect.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Rachel was helping Lily pack.
The little girl had chosen her stuffed rabbit, a pink sweater, and a picture book.
She had also taken a photograph from her nightstand.
It was a picture of Claire.
I had framed it years ago.
Lily carried it everywhere.
When she returned downstairs, she held it against her chest.
"Daddy?""
I knelt.
"What is it, baby?""
"Can Mommy Claire come get me?""
The question hit me harder than anything else.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at my daughter.
"Mommy Claire can't come get you, sweetheart.""
Lily's eyes filled.
"Because she's in heaven?""
I nodded.
"But I'm here. Aunt Rachel is here. And Noah is here.""
Lily looked toward the staircase.
"Is Noah coming?""
I glanced at the boy.
He was standing beside the officer.
"I don't know yet," I admitted.
Noah immediately stepped forward.
"I want to go with Lily.""
Vanessa stood up.
"Absolutely not.""
Noah shrank.
I turned toward her.
"Stop.""
"He is my son!""
"And she's my daughter.""
"He's not yours!""
The words came out sharply.
Noah looked at me.
I looked back at him.
Then I said something I had never planned to say.
"Noah, I know I'm not your biological father. But if you want to stay with me, I will never treat you like you're less important.""
His eyes filled.
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
"How noble.""
I ignored her.
"You're eight years old. None of this is your fault.""
Noah began crying.
"Can I still call you Dad?""
I couldn't speak for a moment.
Then I pulled him into my arms.
"Always.""
Vanessa watched us.
Her expression was impossible to read.
Then she said quietly:
"You're making a mistake, Marcus. You have no idea what you've just walked into.""
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
She shook her head.
"Nothing.""
But the way she said it stayed with me.
A few minutes later, Rachel drove Lily to the hospital with me following behind.
Noah remained temporarily with the officers while they determined the safest arrangement.
At the hospital, a pediatric nurse examined Lily.
She weighed her.
Checked her temperature.
Asked about her meals.
And gently examined the small bruises on her arms and legs.
I sat beside the bed, holding her hand.
The nurse asked Lily whether anything hurt.
Lily shook her head.
Then she looked at me.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Am I in trouble?""
I leaned forward.
"No, baby.""
"Because I ate the pizza?""
I closed my eyes.
"No. Never.""
She seemed relieved.
Then the nurse asked whether Lily had been getting enough food.
My daughter looked at me before answering.
"I eat when Daddy comes home.""
The nurse glanced at me.
I felt sick.
She continued the examination.
When she finished, she spoke with the attending pediatrician.
I could see them talking through the partially open door.
The doctor eventually returned.
"Mr. Hale, we need to run some blood tests and assess her nutritional status. She appears smaller than expected for her age, and there are a few concerns we'd like to investigate.""
I nodded.
"Whatever she needs.""
The doctor lowered her voice.
"Has she been losing weight?""
I thought about the previous months.
Lily had always been small.
Vanessa frequently commented that she was a picky eater.
She told me Lily needed smaller portions because she wasn't very active.
Sometimes I came home late and found her asleep before dinner.
I had accepted every explanation.
"I don't know," I admitted.
The doctor looked at me gently.
"That's okay. We'll work through it.""
While they took Lily for tests, Rachel stayed with her.
I stepped into the corridor and called my attorney, David.
He answered quickly.
"Marcus, what's going on?""
"I need an emergency custody consultation.""
"What happened?""
I told him everything.
The laundry room.
The food restrictions.
The notebook.
The children's statements.
When I finished, he was silent.
Then he said, "Do not return to that house alone. Do not threaten your wife. Preserve every piece of evidence. And don't delete any messages.""
"I won't.""
"Has Vanessa contacted you?""
"No.""
"Good. Keep everything documented.""
I hung up.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
It contained one sentence.
*You need to ask Vanessa what happened to Lily's birthday last year.*
I stared at the screen.
Lily's birthday last year?
I had been working out of state that week.
Vanessa had organized the party.
She told me Lily had enjoyed it.
There had been photographs.
A cake.
Pink balloons.
And a video of Lily blowing out candles.
I had watched it from my hotel room.
I remembered smiling when Vanessa sent it.
I typed a reply.
*Who is this?*
The response came almost immediately.
*Someone who saw what happened. Check your wife's old phone.*
I stared at the message.
Then another arrived.
*And Marcus? Don't let Vanessa know you're looking.*
I called the number.
It went straight to voicemail.
I tried again.
Nothing.
A cold feeling spread through my stomach.
I returned to Lily's room.
She was back in bed, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Rachel sat beside her.
"Everything okay?"" she asked.
I showed her the message.
Her expression changed.
"Last year's birthday?""
I nodded.
Rachel looked toward Lily.
"Do you remember her birthday party?""
Lily's eyes brightened slightly.
"The pink cake?""
"Yes, sweetheart," Rachel said.
"Did you have fun?""
Lily was quiet.
Then she looked at me.
"Can I tell you something?""
I sat beside her.
"Anything.""
She leaned closer.
"Mommy said I had to blow out my candles before Noah came downstairs.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because Noah was sleeping.""
I remembered the video.
There had been no sign of Noah.
I had assumed he was with the other children.
"Did something happen?""
Lily nodded.
"Mommy said I ate too much cake.""
My chest tightened.
"What happened after that?""
She looked at her rabbit.
"Mommy took my presents.""
"All of them?""
She nodded.
"She said I didn't deserve them.""
I stared at Rachel.
She looked horrified.
Then Lily added something that made my blood run cold.
"She said if Daddy knew I had cake, he would be mad at me.""
I leaned forward.
"Baby, Daddy would never be mad at you for eating cake.""
Lily smiled faintly.
"I know now.""
I kissed her forehead.
Then I stepped into the corridor and opened my phone.
I searched for last year's birthday photographs.
There were dozens.
Vanessa smiling beside the cake.
Lily wearing a pink dress.
The candles.
The balloons.
But something was missing.
Every photograph showed Lily alone.
No other children.
No guests.
No Noah.
I opened the video.
It began with Vanessa singing.
Lily clapped her hands.
Then she blew out the candles.
Vanessa kissed her cheek.
The video ended.
I watched it again.
And again.
Then I noticed something in the background.
A small shadow moving near the kitchen doorway.
Someone had been standing there.
I enlarged the image.
It was Noah.
He was holding a plate.
And he was crying.
I replayed the final seconds.
Just before the video ended, Noah looked directly at the camera.
His lips moved.
I turned up the volume.
The words were faint, but clear enough.
"Mommy, please let Lily have some.""
I stopped breathing.
Then my phone rang.
It was the unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Who is this?""
A woman's voice came through.
"Marcus? My name is Patricia. I used to work for Vanessa.""
"How do you know about Lily?""
There was a long silence.
Then she said:
"Because I was the person who used to sneak food into that laundry room.""
I gripped the phone.
"What?""
Patricia began crying.
"I tried to help your daughter. But Vanessa caught me.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I did.""
My blood went cold.
"When?""
"Last year. After Lily's birthday.""
I stared at the hospital wall.
"What are you talking about?""
Patricia took a shaky breath.
"I sent you photographs, messages, everything. Vanessa told me she would explain. Then I received a call from someone claiming to be your lawyer.""
I closed my eyes.
"My lawyer?""
"Yes. He said you didn't want me contacting your family again.""
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
I had never received those messages.
I had never spoken to any lawyer about Patricia.
And then she said the words that changed everything.
"Marcus, I don't think Vanessa was acting alone.""
I swallowed.
"What do you mean?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"Someone in your family helped her hide what she was doing.""
I looked through the hospital room window.
Lily was asleep.
Rachel was sitting beside her.
I asked the question slowly.
"Who?""
Patricia hesitated.
May you like
Then she answered.
"Your mother, Eleanor.""
