Amused

Chapter 7: My Son Had Disappeared

For three seconds, I couldn't speak.

My six-year-old son was gone.

My wife had taken him without my permission, using another forged authorization, and nobody knew where she had gone.

“Michael?”” James called.

I was already moving toward the elevator.

“Call the police. Tell them my wife has taken my six-year-old son without authorization. Give them the vehicle description and every possible destination.””

James grabbed his phone.

I called Patricia.

She answered immediately.

“Michael?””

“Vanessa has taken Noah.””

Silence.

“What?””

“She told security she was taking him to a medical appointment. She used a forged authorization. We don't know where she is.””

“Have you contacted the police?””

“James is doing it now.””

“Good. Don't approach her alone. I'm contacting the family court and requesting emergency intervention.””

I ended the call.

Laura Bennett stood near the apartment window, visibly shaken.

“Mr. Carter, I think I know where she might be going.””

I turned.

“Where?””

Laura hesitated.

“There's a property outside Fort Lauderdale. It's used by one of the organizations Vanessa and Richard have been involved with.””

“What organization?””

“Carter Family Transition Services.””

I stared at her.

“That's not my company.””

“No. It's a separate organization. Vanessa registered it under a similar name.””

James looked up from his phone.

“Do you have the address?””

Laura nodded.

She opened her laptop and searched through a folder.

“Here.””

She turned the screen toward us.

A residential property appeared on the map.

It was isolated, surrounded by trees, and located nearly forty miles from the city.

“What happens there?”” I asked.

Laura swallowed.

“Children stay there temporarily while their parents complete custody arrangements.””

“Without their fathers?””

“Sometimes.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who runs it?””

“Richard.””

I looked at James.

“We're going.””

James shook his head.

“Not without the police.””

I stepped closer.

“My son is there.””

“And if you arrive and confront Richard without legal protection, he could use that against you. We need the authorities involved.””

I hated every word.

But he was right.

We called the police again and provided the address.

Within minutes, officers were dispatched.

While we waited, Laura made another call.

She spoke quietly for several seconds.

Then she returned.

“I've reached someone who used to work there.””

“Who?””

“A woman named Denise Walker. She left six months ago.””

“Why?””

Laura looked at the floor.

“Because she couldn't accept what they were doing.””

“What were they doing?””

Laura closed her laptop.

“Keeping children away from parents while false reports were prepared.””

I stared at her.

“Did you know about this?””

She nodded.

“I helped prepare some of the reports.””

Her voice cracked.

“I told myself I was protecting children from unstable households. Vanessa convinced me that the fathers were dangerous.””

“And now?””

“Now I know some of those reports were fabricated.””

I stepped toward her.

“You helped them do this to my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“You helped them take my son.””

She lowered her head.

“Yes.””

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked, “Why are you helping me now?””

She looked at the framed photograph of herself and Richard.

“Because Sophie is my daughter.””

She wiped her eyes.

“And because I finally understand what I've done.””

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

An officer named Detective Harris listened to everything we had gathered.

He examined the recording, the school documents, and the photograph of Noah's missing bedroom note.

“Mr. Carter, we're treating this as an urgent child welfare matter. We'll contact the relevant authorities in the area and coordinate a response.””

“Can I go with you?””

“Not yet. We need to establish whether the location is occupied and whether there are any immediate safety concerns.””

I stared at him.

“That's my son.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't. He's six years old. He still sleeps with a stuffed dinosaur because he's afraid of the dark. He thinks his mother is taking him somewhere safe.””

The detective's expression softened.

“We'll do everything we can.””

I looked away.

For the first time in twenty years, I felt completely powerless.

Then my phone rang.

Emily.

“Dad?””

“Sweetheart, where are you?””

“I'm home with Mrs. Collins.””

“Good. Stay with her.””

“Is Noah okay?””

I closed my eyes.

“We're trying to find him.””

Emily began crying.

“It's my fault.””

“No.””

“If I hadn't found those files—”

“Emily, listen to me. Your brother is not missing because of you. Your mother made this decision. The adults responsible for this situation are the people who chose to lie and hurt others.””

“But what if she doesn't bring him back?””

I swallowed.

“I will bring him home.””

I heard her breathe shakily.

“Promise?””

“Promise.””

After ending the call, I walked toward the window.

Miami glittered beneath the afternoon sun.

Somewhere in the city, my wife was moving my son from place to place while pretending she was protecting him.

I couldn't understand how a woman who had once sat beside his hospital bed could do something like this.

Then Detective Harris approached.

“Mr. Carter, we've located the property.””

I turned immediately.

“Is Noah there?””

“We don't know yet. But the property is registered to Carter Family Transition Services.””

“Who owns it?””

The detective looked at his notes.

“Vanessa Carter.””

My jaw tightened.

“Of course.””

He continued.

“We've also identified a vehicle matching the description from your security footage.””

“Where?””

“Near the property.””

I stepped toward him.

“Then let's go.””

He shook his head.

“We're coordinating with local officers. I need you to stay here until we confirm the situation.””

I felt my hands clench.

Then Laura spoke.

“Detective, there's something you should know.””

He turned.

“What?””

“The property has a second entrance. A service road behind the main building.””

She opened her laptop and displayed a satellite image.

“If Vanessa sees police approaching the front entrance, she may leave through the back.””

The detective examined the map.

“Are you certain?””

“I used to deliver documents there.””

He immediately radioed the information to the officers.

Minutes passed.

Then another ten.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A small voice came through.

“Daddy?””

Everything inside me stopped.

“Noah?””

“Daddy!””

I gripped the phone.

“Buddy, where are you?””

“I don't know.””

“Are you safe?””

“I think so.””

I heard a door close.

Then Vanessa's voice.

“Noah, give me that.””

My son began crying.

“Daddy, Mommy says you're not allowed to come.””

“Put Noah on the phone, Vanessa!””

She didn't answer.

I heard her breathing.

Then she said, “Michael, stop looking for us.””

“Where is my son?””

“He's fine.””

“Let me speak to him.””

“He's upset because you keep making everything difficult.””

“You took him without permission.””

“I am his mother.””

“And I'm his father.””

She laughed softly.

“You should have thought about that before abandoning us for your company.””

I looked at Detective Harris.

He was signaling for me to keep her talking.

“Vanessa, bring Noah home.””

“No.””

“Whatever you think I've done, we can discuss it.””

“It's too late.””

“Why?””

She went quiet.

Then she said, “Because you don't understand what happens if Richard loses control of the company.””

I froze.

“What does Richard have to do with Noah?””

“Everything.””

“Put him back on the phone.””

“No.””

I heard a muffled sound.

Then Noah cried.

“Daddy, I want to go home.””

My throat tightened.

“I'm coming, buddy. I promise.””

The call ended.

Detective Harris immediately took my phone.

“We're tracing the number.””

“How long?””

“Give us a moment.””

He spoke to another officer.

Then his expression changed.

“We have a location.””

“Where?””

“An apartment complex approximately eight miles from the property.””

I stared at him.

“She's moving him?””

“Possibly.””

The officers began coordinating.

Then Laura suddenly stood.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at the screen on her laptop.

“That's not a random apartment complex.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

“It's where Richard keeps his private office.””

My stomach dropped.

The detective immediately relayed the information.

A few minutes later, another officer called.

They had located Vanessa's vehicle.

It was parked outside the building.

And a second vehicle was registered to Richard Hale.

I stepped toward the detective.

“Please.””

He looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, we'll get your son.””

Then his radio crackled.

An officer reported that the building's security footage showed Vanessa entering with Noah.

But there was something else.

A second person had met her at the entrance.

The officer zoomed in on the footage.

The detective turned toward me.

“Mr. Carter, the person who met your wife is not Richard Hale.””

“Who is it?””

He showed me the photograph.

I recognized him immediately.

It was Dr. Samuel Reeves.

Our family physician.

The same man whose forged medical report had been used to justify sending Emily away.

And according to the officer, he had entered the building carrying a document folder and a small medical bag.

I stared at the image.

“What is he doing with my son?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

If you want Noah home, come alone. Bring the original Meridian ownership documents. No police. No lawyers.

Below it was a photograph.

Noah was sitting on a sofa, holding his red toy truck.

May you like

His eyes were wet.

And behind him, on the wall, was a framed photograph of Richard Hale.
