Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Watching My Daughter

I stared at the photograph on my phone.

Emily stood outside her school entrance, holding her backpack against one shoulder. Her hair was tied back, and she was looking down at something in her hand.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

Someone had been watching her.

I immediately called her school.

“Mrs. Patterson, this is Michael Carter. I need you to confirm something.””

“Of course, Mr. Carter.””

“Is Emily still at school?””

“Yes. She's in her English class.””

“Has anyone attempted to collect her?””

There was a pause.

“Not that I'm aware of.””

“Listen carefully. Nobody is authorized to take my daughter anywhere today. Not her mother, not a family friend, not anyone claiming to have permission from me. If someone arrives, call me and the police.””

Her voice became concerned.

“Is there a problem?””

“Yes. And I don't want Emily frightened, but I need you to take this seriously.””

“I understand. I'll notify our security office immediately.””

I ended the call and dialed Emily.

She answered after two rings.

“Hi, Dad.””

“Sweetheart, where are you?””

“I'm in the library. We have a study period.””

“Are you alone?””

“No. Olivia's here.””

“Good. Stay with her. Don't leave the school building until I arrive.””

“Dad, what's wrong?””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Nothing you need to worry about right now. I just want to pick you up.””

She was quiet.

Then she asked, “Is Mom coming?””

“No.””

“Okay.””

That single word carried more relief than a fifteen-year-old should ever have to express.

I grabbed my jacket.

Daniel stood beside my desk.

“Michael, what are you doing?””

“Someone is following Emily.””

His expression changed.

“Do you want me to arrange security?””

“Yes. Two people at the school. Another at the house. And I want a forensic copy of every company record before anyone has an opportunity to erase anything.””

Daniel nodded.

“What about Richard?””

“Don't tell him we're moving.””

“And Vanessa?””

I looked at the photograph.

“Especially don't tell her.””

Twenty-five minutes later, I arrived at the school.

Mrs. Patterson was waiting near the main entrance.

She looked relieved when she saw me.

“Mr. Carter.””

“Where's Emily?””

“In my office. I thought it would be safer.””

I followed her down the corridor.

Emily was sitting on a sofa, her backpack resting beside her.

When she saw me, she stood immediately.

“Dad!””

I hugged her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She pulled away and studied my face.

“You look scared.””

“I've had a difficult morning.””

“Is it about the money?””

I nodded.

“Partly.””

Mrs. Patterson cleared her throat.

“Mr. Carter, there's something else.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She opened a folder.

“Your wife called the school this morning. She requested that Emily be released to a private educational transportation service.””

“Did you release her?””

“No. We refused because the authorization didn't match our records.””

“Who was the driver?””

She showed me a printed visitor request.

The company name was unfamiliar.

The driver's name was listed as Mark Ellison.

But the contact number belonged to a private security company.

I photographed the document.

“Thank you for stopping this.””

Mrs. Patterson looked at Emily.

“Your daughter has had a difficult few weeks. Whatever is happening at home, she deserves to feel safe here.””

I nodded.

“She does.””

As Emily collected her backpack, her phone vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

Then her face changed.

“Dad?””

“What is it?””

She turned the phone toward me.

A message from Vanessa.

Your father is making this much worse than it needs to be. Come home immediately. We need to discuss your future.

I took a screenshot.

“Don't answer.””

Emily put her phone away.

We walked outside.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

Its engine was running.

I stopped.

The driver was looking directly at us.

“Emily, stay behind me.””

The passenger window lowered.

A man in his forties leaned toward the opening.

“Mr. Carter?””

I didn't answer.

He held up a laminated identification card.

“I'm here to collect Emily. Her mother arranged transportation.””

“What's your name?””

“Mark Ellison.””

I recognized the name from the visitor request.

“Who employs you?””

“Carter Family Services.””

“I've never heard of it.””

He gave me an impatient look.

“Sir, I'm just doing my job.””

“Then you won't mind waiting while I call the police.””

His expression changed.

He looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“There's no need to make a scene.””

“Get out of the vehicle.””

He didn't move.

Instead, he raised his phone and made a call.

I watched him speak.

Then the SUV pulled away.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Dad, that was him.””

“Who?””

“The man who drove us to Miami.””

I turned.

“What?””

She nodded.

“He was at the apartment. Mom introduced him as a driver.””

I watched the vehicle disappear around the corner.

My daughter had recognized him.

And he had recognized her.

I called the police.

While we waited, Patricia arrived.

She had brought a colleague named James Porter, a criminal attorney who specialized in corporate fraud.

Patricia listened carefully as I explained what had happened.

Then she looked at Emily.

“Sweetheart, I need to ask you something. Has anyone ever asked you to sign a document you didn't understand?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“Mom did.””

“When?””

“About four months ago.””

“What kind of document?””

“She said it was permission for me to travel with her.””

Patricia frowned.

“Did you sign it?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Emily looked at me.

“Because it said I agreed to live somewhere else if my parents couldn't take care of me.””

My chest tightened.

Patricia exchanged a glance with James.

“Did your mother explain why she wanted that?””

“She said it was just a precaution.””

“Did she tell you where you would live?””

Emily shook her head.

“No. But she said it was somewhere I wouldn't have to worry about Dad's problems.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

James spoke carefully.

“Michael, I think we need to examine every document Vanessa has submitted concerning your daughter.””

“Agreed.””

“And we should make sure the school has written instructions about who can collect her.””

“Already handled.””

The police arrived shortly afterward.

I gave them the photograph, the visitor request, and the details of the SUV.

They took a statement and assured me they would investigate the attempted collection.

By the time we reached home, it was nearly noon.

Two security personnel were waiting at the entrance.

Emily went upstairs.

I went directly to my study.

Patricia followed.

“Michael, before you open another file, there's something I found.””

She placed a document on my desk.

It was a property ownership record.

The Miami apartment was registered to a company called Blue Harbor Holdings.

I read the shareholder information.

Vanessa Carter: 50 percent.

Richard Hale: 50 percent.

“Who funded the purchase?””

“That's what we're trying to establish. But the mortgage deposit came from Silver Oak Consulting.””

I leaned back.

“So company money bought their apartment.””

“Possibly. We need the bank trail to prove it.””

I looked at the document.

“Patricia, I want to know whether Vanessa has been using our marital assets as collateral.””

She nodded.

“I'm already checking.””

My phone rang.

The caller ID showed Vanessa.

I answered.

“Hello.””

“Michael, what exactly are you doing?””

Her voice was controlled, but I could hear anger beneath it.

“What are you talking about?””

“Don't pretend you don't know. You took Emily from school, you've blocked my access to her, and now people are telling me you're making accusations about my business.””

“Your business?””

A pause.

“Silver Oak Consulting.””

Silence.

Then she laughed.

“Is that what this is about? Michael, you're embarrassing yourself.””

“You own the company.””

“It's a legitimate consulting business.””

“Then explain the one and a half million dollars transferred from Meridian.””

“I provided services.””

“Which services?””

“You don't understand the arrangement.””

“Then explain it.””

She sighed.

“You're behaving like an angry child.””

I looked at Patricia.

She was taking notes.

“Why did you submit a medical declaration claiming I was cognitively impaired?””

There was no immediate response.

Then Vanessa said, “You shouldn't have found that.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

She had answered without thinking.

I repeated the question.

“Why did you submit that declaration?””

“Michael, we need to talk in person.””

“No. Answer me.””

“You've been absent for months. You don't know what's happening in this family.””

“I know you forged my signature.””

“You were never going to cooperate.””

“Cooperate with what?””

She lowered her voice.

“Richard and I were trying to protect what you built.””

“By transferring ownership to a company you control?””

“You're not listening.””

“I am listening, Vanessa. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually listening.””

Her breathing changed.

Then she said something I would never forget.

“Do you really think you were supposed to remain in charge forever?””

I stared at the phone.

“What does that mean?””

She ended the call.

Patricia looked up.

“Did she admit anything?””

“She admitted the declaration existed and that she knew about it.””

Patricia nodded.

“That's useful.””

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was a message from an unknown number.

Mr. Carter, my name is William Carter. I'm the director of student placement at Westbridge Academy. I need to meet you privately.

I typed:

Why?

The response came almost immediately.

Because your wife paid us to accept Emily under unusual conditions.

I stood.

“What conditions?””

Another message appeared.

And because she wasn't the first child Vanessa tried to place here.

I looked at Patricia.

“Find out who William Carter is. I want to meet him today.””

Patricia read the message.

Her expression darkened.

“Michael, I think this is bigger than corporate fraud.””

I looked toward the staircase.

May you like

Upstairs, my daughter was finally home.

And someone had been planning to take her away.
