Chapter 1: The Photograph That Stopped My Wedding

The photograph showed my fiancé kissing another woman in the hotel parking garage at 11:47 the night before our wedding.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The worst part was the woman standing beside him, holding a folder bearing my name.

I stared at the screen until the words around the photograph blurred. Behind me, my mother was still crying, and somewhere downstairs, two hundred guests were waiting for me to walk down the aisle.

My wedding had been canceled less than five minutes earlier.

Apparently, that was only the beginning.

"Nia?"" my mother whispered.

"Sweetheart, what's wrong?""

I locked my phone.

"Nothing, Mom. Let's get you somewhere quiet.""

She studied my face in the gold-framed mirror. The uneven remnants of her hair framed her swollen eyes, and loose strands clung to the champagne fabric of her dress.

"Please don't let me ruin your wedding," she said.

The words struck harder than Vanessa's scissors ever could.

"You didn't ruin anything.""

"But everyone is downstairs.""

"Let them wait.""

I took my mother's handbag from the vanity and helped her into her coat. My fingers were shaking so badly that I missed the sleeve twice.

Behind us, Vanessa was still shouting about her hair.

"Marcus, she can't just cut off my ponytail and walk away! Do you know how much that hair cost me to maintain?""

Marcus stood beside her, holding my engagement ring in his closed fist.

"Vanessa, please," he said.

"Not now.""

"Not now?"" She pointed at me.

"Your bride just assaulted me!""

I turned.

"Your scissors were in my mother's hair after she told you to stop.""

"She moved!""

"Then why did you keep cutting?""

Vanessa opened her mouth, but Marcus stepped between us.

"Nia, I've already told you it was an accident. What else do you want?""

I lifted my phone.

"For you to tell me the truth.""

His eyes dropped to the screen.

For the briefest moment, his expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

He knew what I was looking at.

"Where did you get that?"" he asked.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"You recognize the picture?""

Marcus rubbed his jaw.

"It's taken out of context.""

"Interesting. I haven't shown you the picture yet.""

Silence swallowed the room.

Vanessa stopped touching the back of her head.

Marcus stared at me, then at the phone.

"Nia, you're upset. You're making connections that aren't there.""

"Then explain what happened at 11:47 last night.""

He exhaled sharply.

"I had business to take care of.""

"With a woman you're kissing in a parking garage?""

"She was upset.""

"That must explain the folder with my name on it, too.""

His face went completely still.

My mother looked between us.

"What folder?""

Marcus reached for my arm.

"Can we please discuss this privately?""

I stepped back.

"No.""

"Nia, listen to me. Whatever someone sent you, you cannot trust it without knowing the full story.""

"Then tell me the full story.""

He glanced toward Vanessa.

There it was again.

That tiny, involuntary look.

The look of a man checking whether the person who shared his secret was still standing beside him.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Marcus, you don't owe her an explanation for every conversation you have.""

I almost smiled.

"You're right. He doesn't owe me an explanation for every conversation. But he does owe me an explanation for kissing another woman twelve hours before our wedding.""

"Maybe you should look at your own behavior," Vanessa snapped.

"You grabbed me and cut my hair.""

"And I will take responsibility for that. I reacted in anger, and I shouldn't have used your scissors against you.""

Her eyebrows rose, apparently surprised that I would admit it.

I continued.

"But I'm not going to let you use my mistake to erase what you did to my mother.""

Vanessa's lips pressed into a thin line.

Marcus seized the opening.

"See? This is exactly why we need to calm down and think rationally. We've spent two years building a life together. We have plans, investments, a future.""

I looked at the ring in his hand.

"Did you love me when you proposed?""

His face softened.

"Of course I did.""

"Did you love me when you kissed her?""

He said nothing.

I waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

My mother squeezed my hand.

Finally, Marcus said, "It wasn't what you think.""

"Then what was it?""

He lowered his voice.

"Please don't do this in front of your mother.""

I looked at Mom, whose shoulders were trembling beneath her coat.

"You mean the mother you watched cry while you defended the woman who hurt her?""

Marcus flinched.

For once, he had no immediate answer.

I guided Mom toward the door.

"Nia," he called after me.

I stopped without turning around.

"If you walk out of here, you might regret it.""

I looked back at him.

"That's a risk I'm willing to take.""

We left the suite.

The hallway smelled of lilies and expensive perfume. Wedding guests moved between the elevators and the ballroom, laughing and checking their phones, completely unaware that the bride had just abandoned her own ceremony.

A bridesmaid named Chloe hurried toward us.

"Oh my God, Nia. What's happening? The coordinator says the ceremony is delayed.""

I forced a breath into my lungs.

"Tell her there's no ceremony.""

Chloe stared at me.

"What?""

"I'm sorry. Please tell everyone the wedding is canceled.""

Her hand flew to her mouth.

"Are you serious?""

"Yes.""

She looked at my mother, then at the open suite door behind us.

"Did Marcus do something?""

I hesitated.

"I don't know everything yet.""

That was the truth.

And somehow, it frightened me more than anything else.

The elevator arrived with a soft chime.

As Mom and I stepped inside, my phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number.

*You have less than an hour before Marcus's lawyer files the final paperwork. If you want to know why he was carrying your name last night, meet me in the hotel's east parking garage. Come alone.*

Below it was a second photograph.

This time, Marcus wasn't kissing the woman.

He was handing her a thick envelope.

On the envelope, in black marker, were three words.

*EVELYN HARPER — PROPERTY.*

My mother's maiden name.

I stared at it.

"Mom," I whispered.

"Do you recognize that?""

She leaned toward the screen.

The color drained from her face.

Then she grabbed my wrist so tightly that the phone nearly slipped from my hand.

"Nia," she said, her voice barely audible.

"Where did you get that?""

I swallowed.

"Someone sent it to me.""

Mom stared at the photograph for another moment.

Then she looked toward the elevator doors, as though someone might be waiting on the other side.

"Whatever you do," she whispered, "don't let Marcus know what your father left you.""

The elevator stopped.

I forgot how to breathe.

"My father died eleven years ago.""

Mom closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"Then what could he possibly have left me?""

She opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the elevator doors slid apart.

And standing in the lobby was Marcus's mother, Patricia, holding a document envelope.

May you like

She looked directly at me.

Then she said, "Nia, we need to talk about your inheritance.""
