Amused

Chapter 8: The Friend Who Sold My Husband's Silence

I called Daniel back seventeen times.

Every call went straight to voicemail.

By the eighteenth, Samantha had already contacted Michael and asked him to locate Daniel's last known address.

I sat in the hospital meeting room, staring at the phone as though the screen might suddenly light up with an explanation.

"Did he say where he was?"" I asked.

"No," Samantha replied.

"But Michael has his address and is contacting the authorities.""

"Someone was with him.""

"I heard.""

"They took him.""

"We don't know that. There could have been another explanation for the noise.""

I turned toward her.

"You heard the man shouting.""

"I did. And that's why we're treating this seriously.""

She called Michael again.

While she spoke, I opened the message history with Daniel and searched for the last conversation we'd had before Lucas's funeral.

Three weeks earlier, he had sent me a photograph of a wooden rocking horse.

Found this in Lucas's garage. Thought you might want it for the nursery.

I'd replied with a heart.

He had responded, Anything for my goddaughter.

I had believed him.

Now I couldn't tell whether any of his kindness had been real.

My phone vibrated.

An incoming message from an unknown number.

*Daniel should have kept his mouth shut.*

I showed Samantha.

She photographed it and forwarded it to Michael.

Then another message arrived.

*You still have time to stop this.*

I typed nothing.

I was done allowing strangers to direct my life through threats.

Samantha sat across from me.

"Emily, I want you to understand that Daniel's admission is important, but we need to verify what he meant. The payment records are evidence. His statement is a lead. We cannot assume he was involved in Lucas's death without further investigation.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

I looked up.

"I know what it means to accuse someone without proof. My father taught me that lesson when he accused Uncle Robert of stealing money eleven years ago.""

Samantha nodded.

"Then we keep our focus on what we can establish.""

She opened her laptop and began organizing the evidence.

I watched her for several minutes before speaking.

"Why would someone pay Daniel to keep Lucas quiet?""

"Perhaps they wanted to prevent Lucas from exposing the development agreement. Perhaps the payment was for something unrelated. We need to know who authorized it and what Daniel was expected to do.""

"But he said he was paid to keep Lucas quiet.""

"Yes.""

"And Lucas died.""

Samantha stopped typing.

"Emily, listen to me. The accident report does not establish foul play. We have no evidence yet that the crash was anything other than a traffic collision. The financial investigation may reveal motive, but motive alone is not proof.""

I looked down at my hands.

"I understand.""

I did understand.

But I also remembered the last time Lucas had kissed me goodbye.

He'd been running late.

His keys had slipped beneath the kitchen table, and he'd laughed when I told him he was going to be the reason our daughter learned to swear before she learned to talk.

He'd kissed my forehead.

Then he'd said, "I love you. I'll see you tonight.""

He never came home.

And now every person who had been near him in those final days seemed to be hiding something.

At three o'clock, Michael called.

"We found Daniel," he said.

I grabbed the phone.

"Is he alive?""

"Yes. He's at a police station. He reported an attempted assault and is cooperating with investigators.""

I exhaled so sharply that my chest hurt.

"Who attacked him?""

"He says two men approached him outside his apartment. He recognized one as a security contractor who has worked for Northbridge Development Group.""

"Did they take anything?""

"His laptop and a folder of financial records.""

Samantha leaned closer.

"Did Daniel identify the second man?""

"Not yet. He's being interviewed. He says he wants to speak with Emily, but we advised him to wait until the police finish taking his statement.""

I swallowed.

"Can I talk to him later?""

"If the investigators approve it.""

"Please tell him I need the truth.""

Michael promised to pass on the message.

When the call ended, Samantha closed her laptop.

"We have enough evidence to justify formal complaints regarding the forged documents and the attempted misuse of your identity. The police can investigate the threats and the assault on Daniel. The financial records will go to the appropriate investigators.""

"And my father?""

"He's not untouchable, Emily. But we need to proceed carefully.""

I looked toward the hospital corridor.

A nurse was approaching with a small bundle wrapped in a pale pink blanket.

My daughter.

They had moved her from the incubator to a portable bassinet for a supervised visit.

The nurse smiled.

"She's doing well enough for you to hold her for a little while.""

My throat closed.

I extended my arms.

When the nurse placed my daughter against my chest, every sound in the room seemed to fade.

She was still tiny, but her skin was warm against mine. Her fingers curled into the fabric of my gown.

I brushed my lips across her forehead.

"Hello, little bean.""

A tear slipped down my cheek.

"I wish your daddy were here.""

Samantha quietly left the room.

For ten minutes, I forgot about the money, the threats, and the people who had betrayed us.

Then my daughter opened her eyes.

They were the same deep brown as Lucas's.

I held her closer.

"I promise you something," I whispered.

"Nobody gets to decide that your life is worth less than their money. Not ever.""

The next morning, the hospital's security officer escorted a police detective to my room.

Detective Lauren Brooks introduced herself and asked whether I was comfortable speaking.

"Yes.""

She placed a small recorder on the table.

"I'd like to ask about the incident at your home, the threats you've received, and your interactions with Charles and Courtney Bennett.""

I told her everything.

The forged signature.

The argument in the kitchen.

My father's grip on my hair.

Courtney's laughter.

The ambulance.

The insurance policy.

The messages threatening my daughter.

I showed her the texts and provided screenshots of Courtney's attempt to trade Lucas's documents for my signature.

Detective Brooks examined each one.

"Has Courtney ever threatened you physically before?""

"No.""

"Has Charles?""

I hesitated.

"Not like this. He's always been controlling, but I've never been dragged out of my house before.""

"Did you believe he intended to harm you?""

"When he grabbed me, yes. I was terrified he would hurt the baby.""

She made a note.

"Do you have any reason to believe your husband was deliberately targeted?""

I thought about the financial records.

"I don't know. I know Lucas discovered something involving my father and a development company. I know someone altered his life insurance policy. And I know someone is threatening me because I asked questions.""

"That's helpful. But we'll need to separate what you personally witnessed from what others have told you.""

"I understand.""

She closed her notebook.

"We're also examining the messages Daniel received. If the assault was connected to the financial investigation, that could be significant.""

"Can you protect him?""

"We'll take appropriate steps based on the evidence and the threats reported.""

Before she left, I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Detective, if someone wanted to make a car accident happen, would it be possible to disguise it as an ordinary collision?""

She regarded me carefully.

"Many things are theoretically possible. But we don't have evidence that happened here. If new information suggests the collision deserves further review, we can refer it to the relevant investigators.""

I nodded.

I wasn't asking her to invent a crime.

I was asking her not to dismiss the possibility.

That afternoon, Samantha returned with a message from Daniel.

He had agreed to speak with me under supervised conditions.

The call came at four thirty.

Daniel appeared on the screen from a small interview room. He looked exhausted. A cut crossed his forehead, and his shirt collar was torn.

For a few seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked, "Why?""

He closed his eyes.

"Because I was a coward.""

"That's not enough.""

"I know.""

"Why did you take the money?""

He looked toward someone outside the frame, then back at me.

"Martin Hale approached me six weeks before Lucas died. He said Northbridge was having a problem with the development contract. He told me Lucas had confidential documents that could damage several people if they became public.""

"And you agreed to keep him quiet?""

"I agreed to persuade him to stop investigating.""

"How?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I told him he was putting his family at risk. I told him the company could sue him, that he could lose everything. I thought I was helping him understand the consequences.""

"You were threatening my husband.""

"I didn't see it that way at the time.""

I stared at him.

"How much did they pay you?""

"Ninety thousand dollars.""

"Did you know the money came from the development project?""

"Not at first. Martin called it a consulting fee. He said I was being paid to advise on business continuity.""

"Did Lucas know?""

Daniel nodded.

"He found the payment. He confronted me two days before he died.""

My throat tightened.

"What did he say?""

Daniel wiped his face.

"He asked whether I had sold his silence. I denied it. He showed me the bank records and said he was going to expose the whole arrangement.""

"Then what?""

"I begged him to let me explain. I told him I hadn't understood what I was agreeing to. He said he needed time to decide whether he could trust me again.""

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"Did you see him after that?""

"No. He left. I tried calling him the next morning, but he didn't answer.""

"Why didn't you tell the police after the accident?""

"Because Martin told me the payment had been traced. He said if I spoke, he'd make sure I was charged with fraud. He also said Charles had copies of documents that could implicate me.""

I looked at Samantha.

She was listening without interrupting.

"Did my father know about the payment?"" I asked.

Daniel nodded.

"Charles knew about the first transfer. He didn't authorize it, but he knew where the money went. He said it was part of a larger arrangement and that I should keep my mouth shut.""

"Then who authorized it?""

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Martin Hale.""

"Why?""

"Because Martin was the person who stood to lose the most if Lucas exposed the project. He had signed the development agreement, approved the financial transfers, and concealed the discrepancies in the land records.""

I sat very still.

"Was he involved in Lucas's accident?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know.""

"Did he ever threaten Lucas?""

"Not directly. But he told me Lucas was becoming a problem that needed to be handled.""

I felt cold all over.

"What does that mean?""

"I don't know, Emily. I swear I don't know.""

"Then why did you wait until now to tell me?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because I thought if I stayed quiet, I could keep my job, protect my reputation, and somehow make everything go away.""

He looked down.

"I was wrong.""

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But beneath the anger was a terrible realization: Lucas had been surrounded by people who had chosen their own safety over his.

Daniel had taken the money.

Martin had hidden the records.

Charles had tried to seize the property.

And Courtney had stolen the documents.

"Did you know about the altered insurance policy?"" I asked.

"No. I learned about it after Lucas died. Charles told me it was a separate issue and that I shouldn't get involved.""

"Did you sign anything for my father?""

Daniel nodded.

"A letter stating that you had asked me to help manage the estate.""

"Did I?""

"No.""

"Then you helped him forge my authorization.""

"I didn't know he was going to use it that way.""

"You didn't ask.""

He bowed his head.

"No.""

I wiped my eyes.

"Daniel, did Lucas tell you about the black notebook?""

His face changed.

"Yes.""

"What was in it?""

"Proof of the third payment.""

I leaned forward.

"Who received it?""

Daniel looked toward the door again.

Then he whispered, "Martin Hale didn't receive that money. Charles didn't receive it, either.""

"Who did?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, someone entered the room where he was sitting.

I heard a muffled exchange.

Daniel's face went pale.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

"Emily, don't trust the person who tells you they're protecting your father. The third payment went to—"

The screen went black.

I stared at the phone.

"Daniel?""

Nothing.

"Daniel!""

Samantha immediately called the detective supervising the interview.

For several agonizing minutes, she listened without speaking.

Then she ended the call.

"Daniel's interview was interrupted because the officers received a new instruction from their supervisor. They're securing the room and reviewing what happened.""

"Was he taken away?""

"They haven't confirmed that.""

I gripped the phone.

"He was about to tell us who received the money.""

Samantha's face was grim.

"I know.""

My phone vibrated.

A new message appeared from the unknown number.

*Now you understand why Lucas died. Stop asking who received the third payment.*

I stared at the screen.

For the first time, the threat contained something more than fear.

It contained certainty.

Whoever was sending these messages knew what Lucas had discovered.

And they believed his death had already taught me the lesson they wanted me to learn.

They were wrong.

Because the last thing Daniel had said before the screen went black wasn't a warning about my father.

It was a warning about the person claiming to protect him.

May you like

And there was only one person in this entire mess who had repeatedly insisted that she was trying to save me.

Samantha Reed.
