Chapter 9: The Truth Claire Was Hiding

I drove to the hospital conference room.

Claire was already there.

Sitting alone.

No anger.

No panic.

Just exhaustion.

I walked in.

“You have five minutes.””

She looked at me.

“You think I’m the villain.””

I said nothing.

She smiled sadly.

“Of course you do.””

“Maya saw you.””

Her face changed.

Not shock.

Pain.

“She told you.””

“Yes.””

Claire looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

“Then tell me why.””

She was quiet.

Finally, she said:

“Because your mother was going to take Maya away.””

I stared.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you know everything.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then explain.””

Claire looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t protecting Maya from me.””

She paused.

“She was protecting Maya from herself.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Turn this around.””

Claire shook her head.

“I’m not.””

She pulled out a document.

“This is the truth.””

I looked at it.

A psychological evaluation.

My mother’s name.

I read the first line.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

“Your mother had a history.””

I looked up.

“With what?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

“Anger.””

I laughed.

“That’s your proof?””

“No.””

She pushed the paper closer.

“Your mother hurt people.””

I stared at her.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

The worst part was that I didn’t know.

Because suddenly every person in my life had a secret.

Claire continued.

“Your mother hated losing control.””

“Stop.””

“She wanted Maya because she saw herself in her.””

“Stop.””

“She told Maya things about you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She made Maya afraid.””

I stood.

“I don’t believe you.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

She looked toward the door.

“That’s why I had to make you hate me first.””

The sentence stopped me.

“What?””

She whispered:

“If you hated me, you would finally listen.””

I stared.

“You destroyed our family to make me listen?””

“I destroyed the lie.””

She looked broken.

“I knew nobody would believe me.””

“Because you lied.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I lied.””

She wiped her face.

“I manipulated things. I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“I was trying to protect Maya.””

I thought about the notebook.

The bruises.

The fear.

“How do I know what’s true?””

Claire looked at me.

“You don’t.””

Then she handed me another envelope.

“Your mother wrote this.””

I opened it.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, please understand that I loved you.*

I kept reading.

*I made one terrible mistake. I trusted Claire when I should have protected my granddaughter.*

My hands shook.

*Maya saw what happened. She saw my argument with Claire. She saw Claire push me.*

I stopped.

Then continued.

*But Claire did not push me because she hated me. She pushed me because I was threatening to expose the truth.*

I looked at Claire.

“What truth?””

Claire whispered:

“Your mother was hiding something too.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Linda.

*Marcus. Don’t trust Claire completely. I found the missing file.*

Another message.

*Your mother’s real secret was not about Claire. It was about you.*

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Claire.

She looked just as confused.

“What file?””

I didn’t answer.

Because another message appeared.

A photo.

A hospital record.

My name.

My birth date.

And one sentence:

*Marcus Bennett was not raised by his biological parents.*

I stared at the screen.

Nothing made sense.

Then Claire whispered:

“What did you find?””

May you like

I looked at her.

And for the first time, we were afraid of the same thing.
