Amused

Chapter 6: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

I drove to Ethan’s house with both hands locked around the steering wheel.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was terrified of what I would remember.

The entire way there, my mind kept replaying fragments.

Maya crying.

A police car.

The photograph.

Claire’s words.

Your brother didn’t just hurt Maya.

I had spent years believing the worst thing that happened in my family was a marriage falling apart.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was that something had happened right in front of me.

And somehow, I had let myself forget.

Ethan lived fifteen minutes away.

The same house where he had invited me for barbecues.

The same house where Maya used to run through the backyard chasing bubbles.

The same house where I once trusted him enough to leave my daughter for an afternoon.

I parked outside.

His car was already there.

The front door opened before I knocked.

Ethan looked older.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

His shoulders were lower.

His eyes looked exhausted.

“Marcus.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

His face fell.

“I knew you would find out eventually.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He stepped back.

“Come inside.””

I didn’t move.

“Answer me first.””

Ethan swallowed.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

“You knew Claire was lying?””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Maya?””

His eyes closed.

“Yes.””

My fists tightened.

“You stood next to me for months while I blamed myself.””

“I know.””

“You watched me think I was losing my mind.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Scared?””

He looked at me.

“You think I wasn’t?””

The anger in his voice surprised me.

Then it disappeared.

“I was scared of what Claire would do.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she do?””

Ethan looked toward the living room.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

“Marcus.””

“No. I spent years wondering why my daughter looked afraid whenever your name came up. I spent months wondering if I was becoming someone I didn’t recognize.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

We stood there in silence.

Then he said:

“The first time I noticed something was wrong was when Maya was six.””

I froze.

“Six?””

“She was quieter around Claire.””

“That doesn’t mean anything.””

“I know.””

Ethan looked down.

“But then I saw her flinch.””

My stomach turned.

“When?””

“One night during dinner.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Maya knocked over a glass. It spilled everywhere.””

I remembered.

A family dinner.

Claire had laughed.

At least, that was what I remembered.

Ethan continued.

“Claire grabbed her arm.””

My breathing stopped.

“How hard?””

“Hard enough that Maya cried.””

I looked away.

“And you said nothing?””

“I did.””

His voice became quiet.

“I told Claire she scared her.””

“What did she say?””

“She said I was being dramatic.””

I stared at him.

“Then what?””

“She apologized.””

I shook my head.

“So you believed her.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“I didn’t.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire made sure I looked like the problem.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Ethan walked to a drawer.

He pulled out a folder.

“I kept everything.””

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Notes.

I picked one up.

A message from Claire.

*You don’t understand Marcus like I do. If you interfere again, I’ll tell him what happened between us.*

I looked at Ethan.

“What happened between you?””

He went pale.

“Nothing.””

“Then why would she threaten you?””

He sat down.

“Because she knew I would be blamed.””

“For what?””

He looked at me.

“For the accident.””

The room went cold.

“What accident?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with guilt.

“The night Maya disappeared.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Tell me.””

He looked away.

“I was supposed to pick her up from school.””

I frowned.

“You?””

“Claire asked me.””

“Why?””

“She said she had an appointment.””

I remembered that day.

Claire saying she had a meeting.

Me leaving work early.

Maya not answering her phone.

The panic.

The police.

The hospital.

“What happened?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I picked Maya up.””

My heart pounded.

“And?””

“We went to the park.””

“Why?””

“She wanted ice cream.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire told me not to.””

I stepped back.

“She told you not to tell me you had Maya?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because she said you would get angry.””

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

He looked broken.

“But I listened.””

I stared at him.

“What happened at the park?””

Ethan’s hands shook.

“Maya fell.””

My heart jumped.

“How?””

“She ran toward the playground. I looked away for maybe ten seconds.””

He stopped.

“And?””

“She wasn’t there.””

I felt cold.

“You lost my daughter.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Where did you find her?””

“Behind the maintenance building.””

“Doing what?””

Ethan’s eyes met mine.

“She was hiding.””

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ethan.””

“She said someone told her to hide.””

My mouth went dry.

“Who?””

He whispered:

“Claire.””

I felt like the room tilted.

“No.””

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“No.””

“She told Maya it was a game.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Ethan pushed the folder toward me.

“Read the police report.””

I opened it.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then stopped.

There was a line I had never seen.

A statement from Maya.

Mommy said Daddy would be angry if I told.

I looked up.

“Why don’t I remember this?””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Because after the accident…”

He hesitated.

“Claire convinced everyone you were unstable.””

“That doesn’t explain my memory.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But this does.””

He pulled out another document.

A medical report.

My name.

My signature.

A diagnosis.

I stared.

“I never signed this.””

Ethan nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why is it here?””

“Because Claire forged it.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Claire.

*You’re with Ethan, aren’t you?*

Another message arrived.

*Ask him why he really betrayed you.*

I looked at Ethan.

His face went pale.

“Marcus.””

“What?””

“He told you about the accident.””

“Yes.””

“But he didn’t tell you everything.””

The silence was unbearable.

“What else?””

Ethan looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“I wasn’t the only person in the park that day.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Claire.

It was an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

A security camera image.

A woman.

A child.

And a timestamp.

The date of Maya’s disappearance.

The woman in the image wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of our lives for years.
