Amused

Chapter 4: The Call From My Dead Wife

The phone continued ringing in Ethan's trembling hand.

Sarah Carter.

My dead wife's name glowed across the screen, accompanied by the same photograph I had saved in my contacts three years earlier. Sarah was smiling in the picture, her head tilted toward the camera, one hand resting on Emily's shoulder.

I had taken that photograph on Emily's seventh birthday.

Sarah had been dead for three years.

Yet her number was calling my house.

"Ethan," I said carefully, "answer it.""

Vanessa lunged toward him.

"Don't you dare!""

Ethan stumbled backward, clutching the phone against his chest.

"Stay away from me!""

"Give me that phone!"" Vanessa shouted.

"You don't understand what you're doing!""

I stepped between them.

"One more step, Vanessa, and I'll call the police.""

She stopped.

For the first time since I had met her, she seemed to have forgotten how to control her face. Her mouth hung slightly open. Her hands shook at her sides, and her eyes kept darting toward the phone.

The ringing stopped.

A second later, a message appeared.

*UNKNOWN CALLER: James, if you want to know what really happened to Sarah, don't let Vanessa destroy the envelope.*

My blood ran cold.

I snatched the phone from Ethan, but before I could respond, another message arrived.

*UNKNOWN CALLER: Ask her what happened at the hospital on October 14. Ask her why she was the last person Sarah called.*

I looked at Vanessa.

"What happened on October 14?""

She swallowed.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Sarah died on October 15.""

"I know when Sarah died!""

"Then why does this person want me to ask you about the day before?""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"It's a trick. Someone is trying to manipulate you.""

"Who?""

"I don't know!""

"Then why are you terrified?""

She opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Ethan stared at the screen.

"Dad, there's something else.""

He tapped the message thread.

There were twelve previous messages from the same number, stretching back nearly six months.

I read the first one.

*Six months ago: You promised to leave the girl alone.*

The second had arrived three weeks later.

*Stop telling him the accident was unavoidable.*

The third was dated two days before Emily's eighth birthday.

*If you touch those documents again, I will tell James everything.*

I looked up slowly.

"Vanessa, what is this?""

She reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

"Don't.""

"You need to listen to me!""

"Then talk!""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I have been receiving threats for months. Someone has been trying to ruin my life.""

I held up the phone.

"Someone using my dead wife's number?""

"Yes!""

"Someone who knows about the accident report, the letters, and the locked drawer?""

She nodded desperately.

"Yes!""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was trying to protect you!""

I stared at her.

"From what?""

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Then she whispered, "From the person who killed Sarah.""

The room went silent.

Ethan slowly lowered himself onto the sofa.

I couldn't make sense of what I was hearing. Vanessa had just admitted that she had known Sarah before our marriage, concealed letters from my dead wife, and allowed someone to place my signature on a report I had never seen.

Now she was claiming she had been protecting me from Sarah's killer.

"Who killed her?"" I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not!""

"You said you knew she was in danger.""

"I knew someone was threatening her. I didn't know they would actually do it.""

"Who was threatening her?""

Vanessa pressed both hands against her temples.

"I can't tell you.""

"Why?""

"Because they said they would hurt Ethan.""

Ethan shot to his feet.

"Stop using me as an excuse!""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Ethan, please.""

"No!"" His voice cracked.

"You told me that if I said anything about today, my father would lose custody of me. You told me you could make sure I'd never see him again. You made me lie to Dad about Emily!""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"I did what I had to do.""

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

"You pushed Emily!""

"I was trying to get the box away from her!""

"You pushed her so hard she couldn't get up!""

"She grabbed me!""

"She was crying on the floor, and you told me to say she fell!""

Vanessa slapped the dining table with her palm.

"Because nobody would have believed the truth!""

The words came out before she could stop them.

I felt the last thread of trust between us snap.

"What truth?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then the doorbell rang.

All three of us turned toward the front door.

It rang again.

Ethan moved closer to me.

"Are you expecting someone?""

"No.""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"Don't open it.""

I walked toward the entrance.

"James, I'm serious!""

I looked through the peephole.

A woman in a dark coat stood on the porch. She was in her late thirties, with short brown hair and a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.

She looked directly at the door.

Then she raised a hand and knocked three times.

"Mr. Carter?"" she called.

"My name is Detective Rebecca Miller. I need to speak with you about your wife's death.""

I opened the door but kept the security chain in place.

"Why?""

She held up her identification.

"Because a piece of evidence connected to Sarah Carter's accident was recovered this morning. It contains information that was deliberately removed from the original investigation.""

My grip tightened on the door.

"What information?""

Detective Miller glanced past me.

Her gaze landed on Vanessa.

For one brief moment, her expression changed.

Recognition.

Then she looked back at me.

"Mr. Carter, I'd like to ask your wife a few questions.""

Vanessa appeared behind me.

"No," she said.

Detective Miller raised an eyebrow.

"I'm sorry?""

"You heard me. You're not coming inside.""

The detective remained calm.

"I'm not asking your permission to conduct an investigation. I'm asking whether we can speak voluntarily before I pursue formal legal steps.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You're wasting your time.""

Detective Miller opened her folder and removed a photograph.

It showed Sarah standing outside a hospital entrance.

Beside her was Vanessa.

On the back, written in black ink, were the words:

*October 14. The day before the accident.*

I stared at the photograph.

Detective Miller watched my reaction.

"Do you recognize this location?""

"Yes. That's St. Mary's Hospital.""

"Do you know why your wife was there with Sarah?""

"No.""

The detective turned toward Vanessa.

"Perhaps you can tell us.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

May you like

Then she said something I would never forget.

"Because I was the one who told Sarah she had twenty-four hours left to live.""
