Chapter 6: The Man My Wife Never Mentioned

I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emily standing against the dining room wall.
Then I saw the message.
She must be removed before Monday.
I kept thinking about the photograph of Sarah's letter, the trust account, and the name Richard.
Vanessa had told me her first marriage ended because her ex-husband was irresponsible.
She had described him as unstable.
A man who couldn't hold a job.
A man who had abandoned his family.
But Rebecca Miller had said there was a court order.
And she had mentioned a daughter.
At seven the next morning, I called her again.
"Rebecca, I need to understand what happened.""
She sounded exhausted.
"I know. But I need to be careful.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard is not someone you want to involve yourself with without knowing the full story.""
I sat at my kitchen table.
"Start at the beginning.""
Rebecca took a breath.
"Vanessa and Richard had a daughter named Lily. She was eight when they separated.""
"Where is she now?""
"She lives with Richard's sister. Vanessa has limited visitation.""
"Why?""
"Because of a neglect investigation.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was Vanessa responsible?""
"That's what the court found.""
"What happened to Lily?""
Rebecca was silent for several seconds.
"She was repeatedly left alone while Vanessa went out. There were reports of missed school days, inadequate supervision, and emotional abuse.""
I thought about Emily.
"Did Vanessa deny it?""
"Of course. She said Richard was poisoning the child against her.""
The words sounded painfully familiar.
I looked at the notebook beside my laptop.
Emily had written that Vanessa blamed her for everything.
"Was Richard involved in the Boston investigation too?""
"No. But he knew Sarah.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Richard contacted Sarah after their divorce. He said Vanessa had started using the same tactics she had used with Lily.""
I stood up.
"Why would Sarah talk to him?""
"Because she was worried about Emily.""
I walked to the window.
"Did Sarah tell you anything else?""
Rebecca lowered her voice.
"She said Richard had documents proving Vanessa was planning to gain access to Emily's inheritance.""
My hands tightened.
"Do you know where those documents are?""
"I don't.""
"Can you contact Richard?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"I can try.""
I thanked her.
Then I called Michael.
He was already at his office.
I explained what Rebecca had told me.
He listened carefully.
"Daniel, don't assume every allegation is true. We need independent records.""
"I understand.""
"But this is enough to justify a formal review of the guardianship application and the financial activity.""
"Can you find out whether Vanessa has made any legal filings?""
"I've already started.""
He paused.
"One more thing. Do you have a copy of Sarah's original estate plan?""
"Yes. Somewhere in storage.""
"Find it. We need to verify who was named to manage Emily's inheritance.""
I went into the storage room.
It took me nearly an hour to locate the estate documents.
Inside a blue folder, I found Sarah's will, the trust agreement, and a handwritten letter from her attorney.
I opened the trust agreement.
Sarah had named me as the sole trustee.
But there was a secondary provision.
If I became incapacitated or died before Emily turned eighteen, the successor trustee would be Sarah's older sister, Margaret.
Not Vanessa.
Never Vanessa.
I photographed the documents and sent them to Michael.
Then I noticed something strange.
The final page had been copied twice.
One version contained Sarah's original signature.
The other contained a signature that looked almost identical.
But the date was different.
The original had been signed three months before Sarah died.
The second copy was dated two weeks before her final hospitalization.
I stared at it.
Why were there two versions?
I called Michael.
"There's something wrong with the estate documents.""
"What?""
"Two copies. Different dates.""
"Send me both.""
I did.
He examined them while I waited.
Then he called back.
"Daniel, the second copy appears to be an altered draft. It isn't signed by the witnesses listed on the original.""
"Could Vanessa have created it?""
"Possibly. But we need an expert to examine it.""
I looked at the document.
A small handwritten note appeared in the margin.
Vanessa — proposed guardian.
I felt my stomach drop.
The document wasn't just about money.
Someone had tried to insert Vanessa into Sarah's estate plan.
And the note was written in a handwriting I recognized.
My wife's.
I took photographs of every page.
Then I called Laura.
"How is Emily?""
"She's okay. We're making pancakes.""
"Can you put her on?""
A moment later, Emily came to the phone.
"Hi, Dad.""
"Hey, sweetheart. Did you sleep well?""
"Yes.""
"Have you eaten?""
"Two pancakes.""
I smiled.
"Good.""
There was a small pause.
Then she asked, "Can I stay with Aunt Laura a little longer?""
"Of course.""
"Are you mad?""
"No, baby. Why would I be mad?""
"Because I'm not home.""
I closed my eyes.
"Emily, you never have to apologize for being somewhere safe.""
She was quiet.
Then she whispered, "Okay.""
I wanted to tell her everything.
I wanted to explain that Vanessa had been lying.
That the school application wouldn't happen.
That nobody was going to send her away.
But I didn't want to burden her with another frightening conversation.
Instead, I said, "I love you.""
"I love you too, Dad.""
After we hung up, I drove to Michael's office.
He had already printed the documents.
He spread them across his conference table.
"Look at this.""
He pointed to the second version of Sarah's estate plan.
"The proposed guardian is Vanessa. The document suggests that she would become responsible for Emily's inheritance if you were unable to serve as trustee.""
"But Sarah never signed it.""
"Correct.""
"Could Vanessa have used this to access the trust?""
"Not directly. But if she had obtained a court order establishing guardianship, she might have been able to petition for certain financial authority.""
I leaned back.
"So she was trying to get control of Emily's inheritance.""
"That's one possibility.""
Michael opened another folder.
"There's more.""
He showed me a printout from the private school application.
Vanessa had described Emily as emotionally unstable.
She claimed Emily had been experiencing "severe adjustment difficulties" since the remarriage.
She also stated that I was frequently unavailable.
I felt my jaw tighten.
"She's using Emily's grief against her.""
Michael nodded.
"And the school application was submitted without your consent.""
"Can we stop it?""
"We can notify the school that Vanessa has no authority to enroll Emily. We'll also document the false statements.""
He looked at me.
"Daniel, I want to ask you something.""
"What?""
"Has Vanessa ever threatened to take Emily away from you?""
I thought about the kitchen.
The words.
The threat.
"She told Emily she would send her to boarding school.""
Michael wrote something down.
"Did Emily tell you directly?""
"Yes.""
"Then preserve that account carefully. Don't coach her or repeatedly question her. If necessary, a qualified child interviewer can speak with her.""
I nodded.
Before I left, Michael made copies of everything.
He also recommended that I contact the appropriate child-protection authorities about the treatment Emily had described.
I agreed.
I wasn't going to hide this to protect my marriage.
By the time I returned home, Vanessa's car was gone.
I walked into the kitchen.
The chipped bowl was sitting on the counter.
I picked it up.
It had a small crack near the rim.
I remembered Emily holding it with both hands.
I placed it in a cabinet.
Then I noticed a note on the refrigerator.
Daniel, we need to talk. Don't involve outsiders in family matters. Vanessa.
I crumpled it.
My phone rang.
It was Rebecca Miller.
"Daniel, I found Richard.""
I sat down.
"Did you speak to him?""
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
"He wants to meet you.""
"When?""
"Today.""
"Where?""
"At a coffee shop near the old train station.""
I looked at the clock.
"I can be there in an hour.""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Daniel, there's something else.""
"What?""
"Richard told me that Vanessa has been contacting him for months.""
"Why?""
"He says she wants him to sign a statement claiming that he believes Vanessa is a suitable guardian for Emily.""
I stared at the wall.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because she promised him something.""
"What?""
"Access to Lily.""
I felt a wave of anger.
Vanessa was willing to use one child to get access to another.
"Did he agree?""
"No.""
"Why?""
Rebecca paused.
"Because he remembers what happened the last time he trusted her.""
I drove to the coffee shop.
Richard was waiting at a corner table.
He was in his late forties, with tired eyes and a gray beard.
He stood when I approached.
"Daniel Carter?""
"Yes.""
He shook my hand.
"Richard Hayes.""
I sat down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he placed a folder on the table.
"I know why you're here.""
I looked at it.
"What's inside?""
"Copies of court documents, emails, and messages from Vanessa.""
I opened the folder.
The first page was a custody order.
The second was a child welfare report.
The third was a series of emails.
I read the first message.
*Vanessa: You need to stop telling people I'm a bad mother.*
Richard's reply:
*Richard: Then stop giving them reasons to believe it.*
Another message followed.
*Vanessa: I can still get Lily back if I prove you're keeping her away from me.*
Richard's response:
*Richard: The court made its decision because of what happened in your home. Not because of me.*
I looked up.
"What happened?""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"Vanessa used to punish Lily by isolating her. She would make her sit in the laundry room when she misbehaved. Sometimes she wouldn't let her eat with us.""
My chest tightened.
"How old was Lily?""
"Six. Seven. Eight.""
I looked down at the documents.
"Did you know she was doing that?""
"Not at first. Vanessa was good at hiding it.""
He looked toward the window.
"One evening, I came home early. Lily was sitting on the kitchen floor with a bowl of cereal. Vanessa and her sister were eating dinner at the table.""
I felt my throat close.
Richard continued.
"She told me Lily had been difficult and needed to learn respect.""
I looked at him.
"That's exactly what happened to Emily.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
He pushed another photograph toward me.
It showed a little girl sitting alone on a staircase.
"That's Lily.""
I stared at the picture.
"Did Vanessa take this?""
"Yes. She sent it to me while I was away on a work trip. She said Lily was being punished.""
I felt sick.
Richard opened another section of the folder.
"She used to photograph her.""
"Why?""
"She said she needed evidence that Lily was difficult. She wanted to show the court that I was the reason the child was unhappy.""
I looked at the messages from Vanessa.
The same pattern.
The same language.
The same excuses.
Then Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out a small plastic sleeve.
Inside was a photograph of Sarah.
I recognized it immediately.
She was standing beside Richard outside a courthouse.
On the back, she had written:
Richard, please don't let her near another child.
I looked up.
"Sarah knew you?""
Richard nodded.
"She contacted me after the investigation in Boston. She had heard about Lily and wanted to understand what happened.""
"Did she tell you she was worried about Emily?""
"Yes.""
He looked directly at me.
"She said Vanessa had been asking questions about your daughter's inheritance.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What else?""
Richard took a deep breath.
"Sarah told me Vanessa had offered to become Emily's legal guardian if anything happened to her.""
I stared at him.
"Why would Vanessa want that?""
Richard gave a bitter smile.
"Because Sarah had money set aside for Emily. And because Vanessa believed she could control the child once she controlled the paperwork.""
I looked at the folder again.
Then I noticed a final document.
It was a handwritten note from Sarah to Richard.
The date was three weeks before her death.
If anything happens to me, please make sure Daniel knows the truth about Vanessa. I don't believe she has changed.
I felt the room spinning.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
Richard looked ashamed.
"I tried.""
"What?""
"After Sarah died, I called the number she gave me. I left messages. I sent two letters.""
"I never received them.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"Vanessa answered one of my calls.""
My blood went cold.
"What did she say?""
"She told me you were grieving, that you didn't want anyone from Sarah's past contacting you, and that if I continued trying, she would report me for harassment.""
I stared at him.
"She intercepted your messages?""
"I don't know. But I never got through to you.""
I looked down at the photograph of Sarah.
Suddenly, her letter made sense.
If you ever meet a woman named Vanessa Reed, please be careful.
She had tried to warn me.
And Vanessa had made sure I never heard the warning.
Richard leaned forward.
"Daniel, I need to tell you something else.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't just ask me to sign a statement.""
He opened his phone and showed me a recent message.
*Vanessa: If Daniel finds out about the original agreement, everything is over. I need the girl out of the house before he sees it.*
I stared at the screen.
"What original agreement?""
Richard looked toward the door.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Sarah made a secret arrangement before she died. It involved Emily's inheritance, and Vanessa was furious when she found out.""
I leaned forward.
"What arrangement?""
Richard reached into the folder and removed a sealed document.
It had Sarah's signature.
And beneath it was a name I hadn't seen in years.
*Margaret Collins.*
Sarah's older sister.
My sister-in-law.
The woman who had disappeared from our lives shortly after Sarah died.
Richard placed the document in front of me.
"Your wife has spent five years trying to get her hands on this.""
I looked at the date.
Then at the signature.
And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to remove Emily from the house before Monday.
Because the document wasn't merely about inheritance.
It was a legal agreement naming someone else as the person Sarah trusted to protect Emily if anything happened to me.
And that person had apparently been trying to contact me for years.
Richard pointed to the final paragraph.
"Daniel, before you read this, you need to know that Margaret has been looking for Emily.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
He swallowed.
"Because she believes Vanessa has already taken something that belongs to your daughter.""
And then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a number I hadn't seen in five years.
*Margaret Collins.*
